Mini-FOT LogoThe following is based on Fallout Tactics and some details might contradict canon.
The M72 rifle is of German design. It uses an electromagnetic field to propel 2mm steel rounds at tremendous speed... and pierce almost any obstacle. Its range, accuracy and stopping power is almost unparalleled.

The M72 Gauss rifle is a small gun in Fallout Tactics.

The Gauss rifle, also called a "coil gun," is a device used to propel a ferromagnetic projectile by accelerating it through a process of electromagnetic induction.

In essence, a hyper-magnetic bolt or particle is rapidly drawn through the barrel using metal coils. When pulsed with a current, the coils briefly produce strong electromagnetic fields to which the particle is heavily attracted. This causes the projectile to be propelled at speeds surpassing traditional chemically-propelled projectiles such as bullets.

The Gauss rifle (and Gauss gun) are named after German mathematician Carl Friedrich Gauss, who formulated mathematical descriptions of the magnetic effect demonstrated by magnetic accelerators.

The Gauss rifle's range, accuracy and penetrating power are almost unparalleled. The M72 is one of two weapons with the longest range and has the highest single fire damage of any firearm.

This weapon has an aiming bonus when used at long ranges, but this bonus comes with a close range aiming penalty which is bigger than the standard penalty other ranged weapons have. This limits the Guass rifle to being most effective when used in a long range sniping role.
