The Gatling gun, also referred to as Gatling's battery gun,[1] is a heavy gun in Fallout 76.

Background[]

Originally invented in 1861 and patented in 1862 by Dr. Richard Jordan Gatling, the Gatling gun was produced by Colt's Patent Firearms Manufacturing Company and saw occasional use by Union forces during the American Civil War. Due to its size and weight, it was used as both an emplaced weapon and a crew serviced mobile artillery unit installed on a carriage. It was later used in numerous military conflicts around the world until its abandonment for more modern designs, later being revived as modern miniguns.[Non-game 1]

This specific variant of the design was manufactured in Charleston, West Virginia sometime after the last patent date on the placard on the weapon, Feb 22, 1891.[1] It has later been converted to fire modern 5mm rounds but retains its distinct crank feed firing system.

The operation is centered on a cyclic multi-barrel design which facilitated cooling and synchronized the firing-reloading sequence. Operated by a handwheel crank, the barrels rotate and each barrel is sequentially loaded with a single cartridge from a top-mounted magazine. It then fires off the shot when it reaches a set position, then ejects the spent casing out of the bottom, after which the empty barrel cools until rotated back to the top position and gravity-fed another new round.[Non-game 1]

The Gatling gun has a slower rate of fire than the minigun but to compensate for this, it deals more damage per shot, and is slightly more accurate than the latter. The Gatling gun's slow fire rate and accuracy can be improved with modifications. Upon closer inspection, some of the modifications appear makeshift, unlike other weapons. Examples include: A large drill bit being used as a bayonet, the comfort grip being an enhanced version of the default one and the "long barrel" mod adding fluting to the outside of the gun's barrels. A basic sight ring and a Broadwell-patent drum (often used on vintage Gatling guns)[Non-game 2] can also be applied, as the only visually professionally made mods that can be added to it. Equipping the Heavy Gunner perks can give a significant boost to this weapon's damage, and using Bear Arms will allow the ability to carry more ammo in exchange for the reduced weight for the gun itself.

Notes[]

  • After the extra large magazine mod is applied, the reload animation in first person view changes in order to fit the magazine's shorter model. However, the animation does not change in third person and uses the same one as the standard vertical magazine.
  • If the extra large magazine and front sight ring mods are added, one may find aiming through said sight slightly difficult due to it being partly obscured by the magazine model's handle.
  • A Gatling gun with the extra large magazine mod and Quad legendary effect has the highest potential ammunition capacity of any ballistic weapon, tied with a similarly modified minigun.
  • Prior to patch 1.3.1.26, Gatling guns could be fired as fast as their user could press the fire button.
  • The Gatling gun does not eject any casings when fired while in third-person view.
  • The Gatling gun has an unusable front iron sight located at the left of its chassis, but it is removed by the optional ring sight attachment.
  • The long barrel modification does not actually increase the Gatling gun's barrel length; it instead turns the barrel ends grooved.

Behind the scenes[]

  • The model for the Appalachian Thunder Pipe skin was created by Jonathan Rush.[Non-game 3]
  • The Gatling gun is based on the real-world version from the 1860s, as designed by its namesake, Dr. Richard Gatling. The manufacturing plate in-game shows and shares the same form as the real-world versions plates. The only real difference is font, the in-game version uses Impact font which was created in 1965.[Non-game 4]

Bugs[]

PCPC Playstation 4Playstation 4 Continuously hipfiring the Gatling gun while repeatedly tapping the aim button would significantly boost the weapon's fire rate. The same exploit was present in Gatling lasers with any charging barrel mod equipped. This has since been patched.[patched]
