Hi folks,

I've just taken a peek at the (Doctor Who Wiki), and I can see they have an ongoing editing contest. Most edits wins a prize, "staff" (ie - ranked users) are ineligible.

I was wondering if people could give me some thoughts as to a) If they think the idea should be rolled out here b) What rules there should be (I mean, lets face it, Jspoel is a nice guy, but on a straight editing contest he's going to win if he's allowed to play...).

Any thoughts? Agent c (talk) 23:51, November 2, 2014 (UTC)

I'm not in favor. No matter how you change the criteria, it can never be representative. If you base it on the amount of edits, it doesn't say shit, because if I write a whole page, I get 1 edit, if i undo someone that added an abundant space, i also get 1 edit. If you base it on bytes added, if i rewrite a whole page, i might end in -125, and if i undo an anon that removed the FO3 page, i have +tens of thousands. Both factors also don't represent the importance of the improvement made. If you add local maps for example, I think there is a bigger added value to our wiki than when you add a bug verification request that will be more than 10 times the amount of added bytes. I also don't see why Jspoel should be banned from the competition, would be a punishment because he's active, which I consider to be nonsense. And to conclude, we already have a thing to motivate our users to do our utter best every year again, the Nukapedia of the Year. And here, people are free to vote based on their general feel of the activeness of the people, which leaves more to the apreciation of the edits made. - Greets Peace'n Hugs (talk) (blog) 00:14, November 3, 2014 (UTC)
If we do something like this, you'd have to set it up so the same person can't win again for like, 3 or 6 months. Spread the love, so to speak. The Gunny  UserGunny chevrons 00:24, November 3, 2014 (UTC)

( I've thought about this kind of editing contest, but even with an incentive I'm not entirely convinced it will work. Editing has long become boring for most everyone unfortunately. First we could give it one shot, and see if the editing picks up. Does Wikia provide the prizes? I was thinking some Steam cash (best prize I'd say) or Bethesda store goodies. The better the reward, the best chance of more editing. Maybe we can do 2 prizes, one for the most edits till the end of this year (which is easy to determine) and one for best quality edits. A prize commitee would have to judge that one, can be me and Agent c, we are honest judges I think and I will withdraw from the editing contest, don't have problems with that. The Nukapedian of the year can run next to it, if someone picks that up, that is. Jspoel Speech Jspoel 14:58, November 3, 2014 (UTC)

No one interested in prizes or goodies then? Jspoel Speech Jspoel 22:06, November 4, 2014 (UTC)

I wouldn't say that. It is more that people have their real life duties and can't spend too much time here. Plus the fact there is not any new info that we can make articles of. Energy X 09:08, November 6, 2014 (UTC)

We don't need new info (although it would be nice). We have more than 17,000 articles that can still use improvement. Making an article better never ends. Jspoel Speech Jspoel 12:01, November 6, 2014 (UTC)

Jspoelstra is right. I've been making small edits grammar/syntax/word adding wise for two weeks now, so just because there's not really any new info there is still plenty to edit. However, I feel like very few people still edit the wiki so there'd be too small of a pool that would automatically favor someone like me who has an abundance of free time to make edits. The issue is, again, how do you quantify/qualify? The number of edits? The quality? If it's quantity, then it might be best to use a point system for various categories. Things like locations and quests garner more points, etc., (I know this thread is old but I figured I'd poke my head in regardless since things still looked to be open.) --Shane For Wax 05:30, November 26, 2014 (UTC)
