Hello ladies and gentlemen, I am The Old World Relics and I type before you today/tonight, again, to ask for community support in adding the tools of a Chat Moderator to my account, therefore becoming a Full Moderator. You may recall my previous request for Moderator found here. I will be reusing some of the previous content, well also adding to sections, adding new sections and revamping old sections.

Who Am I?

Well, my real name is Nathan Gregory, I'm a now 15 years old (a surprise to most of you) male living in Ontario Canada, but I'm sure that's not what you really care about. I joined the wiki on January 7th, 2012 (as can be seen here) but became editorially active on February 19, 2012. On June 5, 2012, I was given the great honour of becoming a Patroller (as seen here) of this great site. Ever since then I could always be found stalking the recent changes and enjoying a good time with many in chat.

What have I done for the site?

Now, I personally believe that there are two very important sides to this site. This is the editorial side, and community side. I was list my contributions by these two categories. Also follows is my current edit count.

Now I understand that the minimal requirements for Full Moderator are 500 article edits. I also see that I do make that requirement by over 300 edits yet, I know this will be an issue for some of you - some not all. But a few things must be taken into account I believe for those that still doubt my commitment to the site. First off, I joined the site January 7th, 2012. This is almost 4 months after the last piece of DLC was released for Fallout New Vegas leaving very little in the way of more to be done. Yet in that time I have indeed found many things to edit and I promise, I will continue to edit many many more things in the future.

This time around Vs Last time around

During my last Moderator request a number of users brought up what they felt was the lack of my involvement in defusing harmful and disruptive situations in chat. I was thankful for them for point this out, as I personally never saw this. From that point on, I have to the best of my abilities, attempted to defuse any disruptive events in chat. I know I have not done the "most amazing" job at this. But I feel we can all agree, I have indeed attempted to, and have done a fair job at it. With the addition of the Moderator tools in chat I can only improve upon this skill.

Another difference this time around is my complete understand of the policy of per-need basis. In my previous request, I spoke of how it was unfair and unjust for a user to not be given a fair chance just because "there is no more room for them". Now I personally still feel that way, but that is on a personal level, and I have cast that aside for now, because for someone who will be deem capable of enforcing our chat regulars, I best be be able to forget about personal preference when the time is right, and A. ahear to all wiki policy and B. be able to understand the time and place for person feelings. Instead of speaking of those feelings, I will instead be speaking to what I see as a legitimate need of another moderator of the chat which I will speak to more in-depth later on in my request. I would like to thank the user (s) that showed me the error and my misunderstandings within the related policy.

Why Me?

The following I feel are the major reasons for me to become a Moderator:

  • I have never once been wiki banned or chat banned.
  • I can be found in chat many hours of the day, and can be called to chat at any moment with a talk-page message as I usually can be found on one wiki or another almost all hours of the day.
  • A true goal of mine here on Nukapedia is to attempt to provide a good time and comfortable time for all here.
  • I am able, and most importantly, willing to take on the extra tools of the Moderator position.
  • Against possibly popular belief, I want to be a Moderator to help the wiki, not as some "popularity" role.
  • As seen in my both edit wise and community wise contributions, I work along side many different users to complete tasks. A necessity for a Moderator is being able to work, and talk with other users.
  • I plan on using my time as a Moderator to give me experience and eventually help me reach the role of Administrator and help the wiki further.

I Promise To

As a Moderator I promise to:

  • Be fair in all my dealings and treat all users the same in concern with rule infractions.
  • Be available for Moderating many undoubted hours of the day, and be available in-case of another moderator being needed in emergency cases.
  • Continuously try to strive to approve upon myself.

The "Too many Mods Argument"

I fully understand that policy dictates, and I quote, are appointed on a per-need basis. I'll put it bluntly. I feel there is a need for another user with chat moderation tools, and I find myself completely capable of this.

Since my last request we have had a number of users with the ability to Moderate chat either leave us entirely, for a period of time, or lose their respective rights to moderate chat. These include:

These users were extremely active in chat, and their departures have left chat in a "more vulnerable" state. Even though most have/planned to return, the number of users vacating their posts, even for a small period of time, still does leave chat vulnerable. As caring deeply about the wiki, I feel as a user, I should strive to ensure that the vulnerability of chat is at a minimal and I believe being a Moderator would help me with this.

Moving along, since my last request, there has been 3 different occasions, yet similar times, where an emergency temporary chat moderator was needed. These users were:

Yes that is correct. Since my last request, I was made a temporary chat moderator as troll had just spammed chat, and the last admin (and only user with chat moderation tools on at the time) was departing for the evening. In the possibility of the spammer returning with an alternative account they made myself a chat moderator. I took it upon myself to not only A. be active on chat into latter hours than I regularly would be (for the sake of the wiki of course) and B. ensure all the rules were in-front of me at the then standing in time. Thankfully, I did not have to use my tools, because they are to used as a last resort in my eyes, but I digress. Know I would have been completely confident in-myself if I had needed to use those tools. Putting that all aside, I feel that if emergency chat moderator rights needed to be given at all, that this shows a distinct need for a user with chat moderation tools. Would you not agree?

And finally, we have the case of real life emergencies pulling us away from our time here at Nukapedia. We all have at least one user we know who has been pulled away from life here for real life problems. We are after all, are still human beings and understand the importance of real life versus that of a website. We all need to take a break sometimes. But everything a use "takes a break", the rest of us are still here, day in and day night, working hard to make this a wiki we are proud of, well also making it one of the most enjoyable and community friendly wikis out there. Anywho, I ramble so, back to my point. Some users that leave also happen to carry extra rights, hence leaving a problem for the rest of us. And then taking it down a notch, say you are usually on at 1am EST. And it's only you on around this time. (This is purely for the sake of example) Then all of a sudden it's your great aunt Lou's birthday, and you have to go out. Or your wife is having a baby, or it's exam times. Whatever, the number of possible things that can pull you away is astonishing. So, say you do have to leave? Then what? This is when more moderators are needed. In the, "what if cases" that another user with moderation tools can't make it. Think about if there wasn't another user with moderator tools? What state are you leaving the chat in? I feel it we need the users with moderator tools for the un-estimatable occurrences.

I'd ask that you all take these points into account when you cast your votes.

On a completely unrelated note, this was my 2000 overall edit. So yay!

Here are the times on-spot temporary moderatorship was give:

03:36, November 16 - OWR
06:33, December 5, 2012 -Dead Gunner
11:42, December 31, 2012 -Gauzz

They are hardly similar times, and in Gauzz' case it was New Year's Eve, such an exceptional date it shouldn't be considered at all. That makes it two times in the span of one month, and as such I don't see it warranting making yet another chat mod, specially considering the timeslot OWR is usually available is already more than covered by several mods.

If we keep using the argument "There is no need for mods as the time span the user is usually on is already well moderated" we will soon never appoint any more mods or admins. The truth of the matter is, these are extra tools to users who prove themselves worthy and responsible, and that is OWR. Times are ambiguous, I'm on at different times all day, sure we have our usual habit, but doesn't mean we will strictly stick to it.--TwoBearsHigh-Fiving Intercom01 19:34, January 12, 2013 (UTC)

Not to mention that there are always such things as special circumstances. Truth is, Relics here has been a power-player around Nukapedia for quite some time, and easily meets the definition in my opinion of a user who deserves the extra tools. If he feels that having the moderator tools will help him mature into an Administrator later, then I say let him have his chance when there's no real reason to say no. 67.187.96.246 19:43, January 12, 2013 (UTC)
'Deserving' isn't something that should be considered since the guidelines explicitly say
Please note that the additional user rights are not a reward for good contributions' nor a promotion to have more authority than other users. (...) Not everybody who meets the requirements will automatically become a special rights user, they are appointed on a per-need basis.

I can and will vouch that there is a need at the time he is on, especially late at night when it just me and sometimes Chris is on. Lately it's just been me into the early hours of the morning and I can't stay up most the time during the weekdays, and he's normally on when I have to go, so yes, there is a definite need at his times, his earlier times, maybe not, but his times going into night is a definite need. Detroit lions Hawk da Barber 2012 - BSHU Graduate 20:02, January 12, 2013 (UTC)

On the "two many mods" arugment: It';s worth noting that we only have 2 mods and 3 chatmods: funnily enough the exact same number is inactive chatmods that we have. Chat mods have dropped like flys in the past (myself for one). I doubt people would make the same argument when it comes to admin requests and even if they did we only have 8 of them anyway. Plus the 3 Crats we have 16 people with chat powers. That really isnt all that much and not all of them even frequent chat in the first place.
There have clearly been times when we've needed chatmods and we havnt had them seeing as we've had to have temp rights. Now, it is true that Rel may not be only on when there's no one else about, but that doest mean that he's never on during those times; yeah his active time may overlap alot of others but that's no reason for him not to get rights, think about this:
1) The times when there are no mods at all on are usually times where there is no one on, when chat is dead and there are about 3 people in the chat not talking anyway. That doesnt really need moderating as much as an active chat with 20 or so people in it.
2) It never really hurts to have just one more mod in reserve, even if it is one more to a list of 5 in chat already. One more person to take care of bad chatusers and help spread the weight more.
3) As I already said, mods can drop off the grid at any time without warning, I sure did. EVen if they dont go fully inactive, they could still be busy on mass, atlost of us could have important uni/college/whateverr-they-call-it-in-murika-work to take care off. Or what if we hit another bug stopping us from getting in chat?
4) There's nothing really stopping Rel from drifting in to those later time zones if he wanted to, but there's clearly not anu motivation for him to do so without the rights.
5) Yes, it is true that round the clock moderation is better than having everyone grouped, but with no mods/mins on during those times there isnt anyone to vouch for the people in the chat at those times, unless you want to search through the logs to see people not talking for 5 hours.
6) Its not really a solid argument in the first place, we used to have double what we have now, when I ran for modship we already had 5 or so chatmods on during my time but that issue wasnt taken up then, and it shouldnt now either.
Honestly, you cant say "this guy shouldnt be mod because we have loads" but ceause that assumes that all of the rights people are doing their job, which (naming no names) I pretty much know they're not. Also, even if we dont need' him it never hurts to have another view on how to treat a certain users ban and, in my experience, mods dont like being told how to treat bans by non-mods. He's proven that he's a good user, he's active (although maybe not during the best hours, but still during chat peak, which is the most important time IMO), he's friendly and liked by the community. If we're going to play the "no more mods game" shall we just ban all new mod/min requests and save everyone the time and effort? JASPER//"Do you like hurting other people?"UserRichard 20:07, January 12, 2013 (UTC)

I think this raises the question as to when we "Need" mods. At the moment to my recollection, around 4AM GMT (Which is my red line - I really should be getting off an hour earlier, but often stick around when I think cover is light) There are two mods on regularly - Hawk and Chris. 2 to me is not enough - the ideal number is 3-4. Whilst its easy to mistake that 2 might be plenty, think about it. If Hawk was to go away for a few days on break, we're down to one. All it takes then is for Chris to need the toilet, and we're modless. I think the need is now. Agent c (talk) 20:18, January 12, 2013 (UTC)

I'm going with Chad here, it's true, we do have times around 11PM - 1 AM EST where we are modless for a bit. Whether the need is miniscule or too large to ignore, there's still a need. Nathan's potential is too great to ignore, so he would be the guy I would select. Dead Gunner's SMG JPG1 "Semper Invictus" 20:58, January 12, 2013 (UTC)

This site is PG 13 right ?

  • There is an over use of the word "NEED" Most good folks who call them selves adults can work things out on their own. Moderators can and should help facilitate "PEACE" . To many Chiefs will fuck the whole tribe.
  • Adding more mods than necessary just pushes wider the gap of those with "online power" and those who just want an equal voice.

Again I say "Nothing against you or any one else who would like to help but if you can't be online when the site theoretically needs another mod it is just one too many hammers in a room that could fix it's self.

To many is still just to much. No offence intended, I salute your wish to help, you can serve just as well as a member.

There are a number of reasons why I feel OWR deserves moderator status. First and foremost his body of work, his article edits aren't massive in quantity, but he has been incredibly involved with many different things across the board. This is a huge standout to me and shows that he is aware of what is happening in and around the wiki.

Second (some of you will claim this is not relevant but it is) for someone who is only 15 years old he acts like someone in their 20's. He is respectful and considerate of those around him when he's editing or when he's in chat. I've yet to see anyone complain about him.

Third, most people when they are applying don't put much down. I know I didn't way back when I applied for admin, the fact that OWR has put this much time and effort into building his credentials in and of itself is impressive. It speaks volumes about his work ethic.

Fourth and finally, why the hell not? Someone who has demonstrated the capability to handle the responsibilities that come with a position of higher rights in a manner that demonstrates their maturity as an individual and capability as a leader should not be told no simply because some people believe we have too many of a certain position. The terms and conditions of Wikia say nothing about arbitrary limits on the number of extra rights users. Our own policies mention nothing about it either. If you wish to limit the number of a certain position, then post a suggestion or vote to change the policies, don't reject those who are clearly deserving.
