About

G'day, I am The Paddling Paladin few of you know me as Rob but most you just know me as Paladin or Paddling, recently I was one of the users chosen a few weeks ago to be temporary moderator, along with my fellow Nukapedians The Mechanical Menace and TechnoCrusader, who you are probably aware they are both running for permanent moderator roles as well.

I have enjoy my time as a temporary discussion moderator it was a really enjoyable learning experience and I can appreciate the hard work the other moderators and admins put into this wiki to keep as a friendly and safe place. So I have decide that I would like to go for a permanent role as discussion moderator. I would personally like thank the staff for giving me the opportunity to be a temporary discussion moderator for the last few weeks.

I personally believe that I've met most of the requirements for the position of Discussion Moderator.

I've been active on this wiki for a couple of years now and the discord for about a year, I have not been banned for a period of at least three months.

I've made more then 2500 posts and I have an understanding of most discussions functions.

I have a basic understanding of editing and I have done 30 edits during my time on this wiki.

I will be able to instruct other discussion users on how to vote and comment on forum posts as necessary.

I do not hold a position of content moderator.

I hope you will consider me for this position.

Endorsement

Hello fellow Nukapedians, my name is The Appalachian and I'm here to give my endorsement for Paladin's application. Paladin is a very active member of /d and an all-round nice person to be around. He has done an excellent job during his tenure as temporary Discussions mod and it is for this reason I believe he would be a great fit for the position. Having three people run for Discussions moderator at the same time may sound like a lot, but with Sax expecting to become less active in a few months, and Dyre and myself taking on other responsibilities on the wiki, it is important that we recruit new moderators who are eager to help and dedicated to the Discussions platform. Paladin certainly fits this description, and I think trusting him with dmod tools would be of huge benefit to the wiki. An added benefit is that he lives in Australia, so he can be online at times when no other moderators are available, so we can cover all bases 24/7. Thank you for reading, and for casting your vote. 6. Yes I believe you have what it takes to be a /d mod. Very much like I said with Mech, you're mature and level-headed, you also shown that you are competent and capable of enforcing the rules fairly, you have also made a series of moderator actions in that time that I have seen, which has helped the /d mod team at large manage Discussions, and uniquely with you, you have shown yourself to have a laidback and calm temperament yet you still enforce the guidelines to the letter. I think you have the potential to be a very popular, respected and experienced moderator, and I believe your perspective would undoubtedly balance out the /d mod team, so it's a yes from me. 9. Yes Paladin stepped up to the /d mod role when offered temp mod, and yet again, showed the community can deliver when called upon. I wholeheartedly support his petition. The Dyre Wolf (talk) 18:17, 14 November 2021 (UTC)
  10. Yes I support Paladin's nomination, especially so because as you may have guessed from his introduction, he is Australian. Moderators need to sleep like any other human being, but if you have one in an opposite time zone than the others, it allows you to have essentially a "night shift" of moderator, which is important as evil never rests. Or to be more accurate in this case, evil doesn't come from just one time zone. The Mechanical Menace. (talk) 18:43, 14 November 2021 (UTC)

  19. Yes Paladin knows what they are doing. Most chat moderators I have worked with are too fascist Paladin on the other hand knows how to monitor chat so it does not become dirty. That's what we need and Paladin has my vote. Geomodelrailroader (talk) 19:01, 19 November 2021 (UTC)

No

  1. No Like with the Menace and Techno, I'm not seeing a shortage of DMOD activity right now, so I don't think we need more (certainly not three all in one go). Branebriar1930 (talk) 13:33, 14 November 2021 (UTC)

Neutral

  2. Neutral I do not have a clear opinion about it. It is nice to see people helping, but I have also no idea if it is currently needed.Jean-Pierre RC (talk)

  4. Neutral From "my time as a temporary discussion moderator" I'd be interested in knowing what others beside The Appalachian have to "say" about it; as I don't know precisely what the role entail nor have the time to sample edits to make my own mind. DynV (talk) 14:08, 19 November 2021 (UTC)

Comments

Same brief note on the current no vote, since the primary concern voiced is still about the existing numbers of Discussions staff rather than faith or concern specifically about Menace petitioning for moderator (Yes, this is still largely a copy paste, but I am trying to at least personalize my votes and comments since these guys deserve it). We currently only have 2 active mods for discussions: Sax and Aish. I am still around, same as I was before making the switch to admin, but only having two dedicated mods is pretty thin. The rest of the mods are all inactive and have been for a long, long while. Also likely be fat trimmed by the recent passing of activity requirements for staff, since inactive members making the roster look fuller than it really is, was one of the reasons I supported its passing. And the number of actively available moderators was one of the reasons why we needed as many temp mods as we did.

The three of us are plenty available and have a decent grasp on being able to cover the platform on a 24-hour basis because the community is usually pretty chill, but there are stretches of the day where there is only one of us consistently available, which can quickly become none of us. Could be anything from serious to silly real-life matters or just other hobbies and work hours, but it does happen. Our temp mod selections bolstered our numbers so that we have typically had 2 able bodied moderators available 24-7 with convenient overlap boosting numbers at the busiest times of day (early morning before work/school, late afternoon as people get off work/out of class for most of the US). Rarely are time zones praised for the good they do, but it really helped distribute the hours of availability for the team. When Techno placed his petition, I said I endorse the idea of of the other temp mods petitioning, and they since have. Obviously not every day is an emergency, this was a particularly strange incident of a wildly dedicated user going out of their way to cause trouble, but something going wrong highlighted how reliant the platform is on just 3 users.

The Katae are usually around Nukapedia in some form or fashion, but they're also both usually busy between editing, Discord, and their own misc. shenanigans. Aish is now doing double duty as a chat mod, as well as taking enough of a leap into editing that I would not be surprised if he is setting a course to apply for admin in the near future. All of that is awesome from Aish, but it does mean the focus on just /d will diminish a little as those responsibilities to other facets of the wiki expand. And as Sax just announced, he will only be with us for a short time longer, at least with the same degree of regularity, due to upcoming (and thankfully happy) changes in his IRL schedule next Spring. Not only will it be handy to have a fair number of active mods, but it will be even more helpful if those mods have really reached a comfort zone and hit their stride by the time Sax leaves, since right now, he's one of the three pillars keeping /d moderated.

And, unlike the editing side, there is no entry level moderation below /d mod. On the editing side, there may only be 3 current content moderators, but there are also 9 patrollers. So now compare those 12 active staff members whose roles are dedicated to only editing, to the 2 active staff members for Discussions (only 1 if you exclude Aish, because of dual chat mod role, zero come next Spring when Sax has to step away). I do not believe our community needs a dozen Discussion mods by any stretch, but I do believe we could have another couple active, trustworthy members to round out hours of availability and number of eyes around. If the temp mods petitions pass, this would give us 3 dedicated /d mods with no other wiki side responsibilities, and all three come from very different time zones (UK, US, AUS) so none of them would be filling a redundant timeslot. Result

The community has shown their strong support, and I join them. Looking forward to serving Nukapedia with you for many years to come. Welcome to the mod squad. -kdarrow Pickman heart take her for a spin! 16:17, 21 November 2021 (UTC)
