Forums: Index > Wiki discussion > Clearing disambiguation page

Hey guys.

I've started with (trying to) clearing the Special:Disambiguations page. You know me as a man who's good at maintenance and likes to keep things as tidy as possible. No red links, no unused files, no uncategorized files and all that kind of stuff. Now we this disambiguations page that is quite a challenge and I can't do alone. Well I might, but it will take me ages. I reckon there will be thousands of pages that need checking. Pretty simple, but I'd like to see it done.

So I'm asking to join me in this effort!

If you want to join up, sign with your name below. If you have problems to how it works, let me know and I'll help you on your way. The *. MSG text files can be skipped for the time being.

So if you want to improve your chances of becoming admin (just kidding, though it will get you in my picture) add your name. Jspoel Speech Jspoel 15:23, May 4, 2013 (UTC)

Yes, count me in for checking the Special:Disambiguations pages!

So what do we do when the list is full of 1000 actual correct links to the disambig pages? I'm pretty sure that there are at least 1000 correct links out there. How will we find the others? Using "what links here" on the disambig template page? The Gunny  380px-USMC-E7 svg 16:43, May 12, 2013 (UTC)

I've stepped away from the Special:Disambiguations or the disambig template. I'm using the Category:Disambiguation and am working through it alphabetically. I'm at the M now. When I'm at the Z I consider it done.

( Also, for some reason, links in navboxes are not being purged by the Wikia servers. We've fixed tons of them, but they're still showing as linking to the original disambig page. I've tried using the ?action=purge command in the url, but it's not working either. I do believe that hitting edit on the page with the templates transposed is clearing the cache and registering the changes, so I'd recommend doing that on all pages that have persistent bad links in the navboxes (also had Jspoel Speech Jspoel 20:14, May 12, 2013 (UTC)to do this on all featured article pages). The Gunny  380px-USMC-E7 svg 17:39, May 12, 2013 (UTC)

I know of the problem, We have for example Edwards, Kevin, Cook with disambig links but once you go the page they're nowhere to be found. An edit solves that. So I suggest we do that. Just a space I think or maybe a useful edit you see. Together with working through the Category:Disambiguation we should get close to 1000 on the list. We won't get rid of them all with some redirects to disambig pages (that happens when pages have links using the {{For}} template. Jspoel Speech Jspoel 20:14, May 12, 2013 (UTC)
It would be cool if the script would try to put "new" entries on this page every time it runs (i.e., prioritize pages that have never been listed, or that have been listed less times than the others). Don't know if that can be configured, though. --FFIX (talk) 00:45, May 14, 2013 (UTC)
I think it actually does that. Check for example numbers 1 - 5 of today and see if they are different tomorrow. Jspoel Speech Jspoel 01:00, May 14, 2013 (UTC)
Unfortunately, the list is largely the same today, and also it seems that we have, for the most part, gotten rid of the ones that don't belong. It is now mostly either pages that belong there or ones that are there because they have navboxes and haven't been updated. I'll try to do minor edits on some of the articles with navboxes and maybe we can expose more of the pages that really need updated on the next run. --FFIX (talk) 11:56, May 14, 2013 (UTC)
It looks like either some brave soul corrected all those navbox links or Wikia finally purged the servers. We're down to only ~475 pages linking to disambigs. There's a few more unused redirects, links from talk pages and user pages that need to be cleaned up that I'll finish up, but it looks like the list is pretty manageable now. Thanks everyone who helped out. The Gunny  380px-USMC-E7 svg 00:51, May 19, 2013 (UTC)

( I made decent overview pages for Find Collar and merged the 4 We Must Stop Meeting Like This that were clogging up the disambig page mysteriously. Killed several hundred birds in 2 stones. Jspoel Speech Jspoel 01:15, May 19, 2013 (UTC)

Now let's talk about redirectsEdit

One of the things I found doing this little project was the vast number of unused redirects on our wiki. I'd like to see what folks think about deleting those unused redirects and fixing all the links to the other redirects. The first question that comes to my mind is "Why would we want to clean up the redirects?"

  • It is possible to get those redirect pages to come up in link suggest when editing, leading editors to link to the incorrect page (the redirect) rather than the correct page.
  • There are tons of unused redirects. I don't see any reasonable reason to keep them. They may come up in search suggest, but I don't see that as a legitimate reason to keep them.

"Why not?"

  • It's a ton of work.

Anybody got any other comments? The Gunny  380px-USMC-E7 svg 16:16, May 19, 2013 (UTC)
