#yes We are most definitely in need of a chat-present admin with checkuser rights. That being said, I still think this vote is a bit redundant. <small></small><small>&nbsp;<span style="border: 1px solid black"><span style="background-color:black; color:white"><span style="background-color:white; color: black">A Follower&nbsp;</span></span><span style="background-color:black; color:white">&nbsp;Talk&nbsp;</span></span></small> 10:08, June 18, 2015 (UTC)

The title says it all. When my bureaucrat vote is finalized, if I gain those rights, I plan on asking Wikia for check-user rights again. For those of you who don't know what these are, they are a staff tool that allows me to look up IPs related to accounts and accounts related to IPs. It is a very useful tool when dealing with sock-puppets and ban evasion. As I had these rights previously, I'm familiar with their use and limitations. The place they are most needed is in chat, and having a check-user rights holder in chat a lot, as I am, will be a boon. I would like to get the community's support to ask Wikia for these rights upon being granted Bureaucrat rights.

Do I have your support to ask Wikia for check-user rights?

Questions

Question: No other check-user has, to my knowledge, made a request to the community to request the rights from Wikia. Why, specifically, do you believe this is necessary? 96.233.121.244 21:28, June 17, 2015 (UTC)

Because Wikia likes to be double sure that the community approves before giving someone access to such a powerful tool once again. Shining-Armor (talk) 21:32, June 17, 2015 (UTC)
As Shining-Armor stated, to show Wikia I have the community's support when I ask them. We, Jspoel, Clyde and I, were granted check-user rights by Wikia at the same time, without asking. It was their "gift" to us. But since I had relinquished my BC and check-user rights, I need to gain them both back. The community's support is paramount for the first, and Sannse asked me, when approached, to do the same for check-user. Short answer: Is it necessary? No. But Sannse asked me to do it and I agree with her that it's appropriate. The Gunny  UserGunny chevrons 21:38, June 17, 2015 (UTC)
Understood. Thank you for the swift response. (The anon w/ the question was me.) --Skire (talk) 22:01, June 17, 2015 (UTC)
I am actually against this feature, in general, because I have personally seen this tool abused in the past to check on people that had done nothing wrong to warrant such bad-faith actions against them. Not just on this wiki.
But when it comes to you, specifically, I have seen you express your desire to see this tool used only minimally, and that is something that I can appreciate. So for now, you have my support. User:Sarkhan the Sojourner 22:08, June 17, 2015 (UTC)
You bring up a valid concern. One I probably should have made myself clear on in the original post. I don't play around with this tool. It's not a toy to use to snoop on people. Wikia makes you sign for these rights certifying that you will only use it for it's intended purpose: to verify suspected abusers of multiple accounts. If anyone knows me at all, they know I'm not gonna sign my name to anything and then break it. I've used this tool a lot. A whole lot. But each time, with just cause on someone that there was fair suspicion of abusing multiple accounts. I lost track of how many people I've nailed with this thing. And that's the beauty of this tool. Used properly, it's a great asset to keep people who should be banned from playing fast and loose with the rules. We've learned there's limitations, too. Not only do you have to understand the tool, but you have to fully understand how IPs work, be able to trace them and make clear decisions where you don't block an entire school or something. The good news is, I already understand this stuff:P The Gunny  UserGunny chevrons 00:22, June 18, 2015 (UTC)
