I have decided to run for the position of bureaucrat.

Yes this request seems like a mess. It is a challenge of those rigid views that I see every day. We need to loosen up. The chat is more or less dead all the time, the wiki itself is fairly vacant and /d is rather dead. We need to loosen up. People don’t wish to stay in a place where they don’t feel welcome, a place where they are unable to express themselves properly without fear of being looked down upon by “superior users” that do everything by the books. We have two bureaucrats at this moment, that is not enough. Both of them are good guys who I believe make just decisions, but I think I would be a fine addition to the team. I know the place, I know its values and the people in it and its history. While that should definitely be preserved, we need to adapt to the newer trends. The fact of the matter is that the place is dying. Might be because of 76’s reception, but I don’t think it is just that.

I’m sure there are plenty more that will indulge in the floccinaucinihilipilification of my request and that is their right. I’m already seeing some old-timers coming in not being too happy about what they’re seeing. That is expected.

I have achieved a fair bit in my time on this wiki. I was an active editor in 2017, but things dwindled this year with school taking more time. That will continue, but I think I will be available to perform bureaucratic duties, nevertheless.

I have stuck around in the more difficult of times, I have seen changes in leadership and I’ve seen friends leave. I intend to be around for as long as I am capable, serving the community I hold so dearly to my heart.

The chat is nearly always dead. Same with /d. I’m in several other Discord servers and compared to them Nukapedia is a retirement home. Now, of course there is no requirement for NP chat to be active, but a wiki will always benefit from having a community, the bigger the better. It have flourished in the past. Then rule enforcement got tighter and different. I think the rules in chat is in many ways justified in theory, but in practice it becomes a little too strict. You may wonder why my being bureaucrat has anything to do with that, well it matters who is in the leadership position. This is a place where everyone is supposed the be equal and have the same possibilities, but truth is people up there have more influence. I intend to use my rights and position for nothing except what is good for the community.

Yeah, I should probably have put this in from the start. Shock value ain’t worth it.

Here is an example of the images I upload just to give you a thought of what I enjoy doing on the wiki:

  19. Icon check All I have to say is that I completely agree with Hallvard's view on the wiki's state. It needs change, badly. The community seems to have worsened since I left. And I thought it couldn't get worse... After I left more and more people have done the same, for different reasons of course but I think that all of the people that have resigned share one reason in common for resigning. That being the community's state and as of recently even the wiki's state. I think we should all lay aside our formal way of voting for once. Regardless if it is the "right" choice from an objective standpoint. Even though I resigned I still care for this place and I want it to thrive, but in reality that is not the case. Thus I will cast my vote, in hope of change and to make Nukapedia great once again. Best regards JackiBackiBoy Fighter Jet 16:48, January 1, 2019 (UTC)

  2. Icon cross I'm disapointed that the top management role in the wiki has apparently become a joke. Distusting hasn't even bothered to give a decent explanation until much later into the request. 3. Icon cross I think a lot of what you say about the place being a mess and nobody seeming to care, the place dying and upoer echelon doing what they want has got much truth to it, but it's not just us. It's all over Fandom and now Curse media because of what they're doing to the communities. I'm suffering burnout myself and haven't edited in the last couple months nearly as much as I should. That said, I still believe that we need talented editors in the Crat poition who know the wiki backwards and forwards, and not just someone to be more or less a goodwill ambassador. These "trends" you speak of is exactly what started this whole mess anyway. StormRider71 (talk) 04:36, December 31, 2018 (UTC)
  4. Icon cross I have no idea who you are. I like some of the things you propose. But at the same time if you wish to have a less strict Wiki, of which I’m for, then we should be removing bad moderators. Rather than electing a president to just oversee everything. I haven't been too active this past month so I have not been able to experience the dying community you spoke of. While I definitely think it's good that you want to change a place for the better, you have yet to convince me that you understand the problem, can find a solution, and are able to enact this solution. I initially thought this request was an ill attempt at a popularity contest. Now it looks like you mean well in trying to get people to loosen up, but I don't really understand how you plan to do that, and how you being a bureaucrat is part of that plan. - FDekker talk 19:33, December 30, 2018 (UTC)

I'll respond to the second significant update of your request here.
"but truth is people up there have more influence" -- You do realise it is exactly that influence you intend to utilise yourself? I think the problem you see is not a result of inequality, but of incorrect usage of the power that creates that inequality, or (assuming good faith) trying to solve a problem in the wrong way. Really, I think what you ought to say is "I want to be a bureaucrat because I want to use my decision power to lean Nukapedia towards looser chat rules", because that's what you want, right? If that's what you want, say it loud and clear so people know what they're voting for. Because right now you've explained why you want to be a bureaucrat, but it's still vague what you want to do with it. There's a reason these applications have a certain shape and form: They tell people what they need to know.
If this request is representative of your fulfillment of the role of bureaucrat (i.e. not thought-through, perhaps impulsive), then I wouldn't want to see you as a bureaucrat. But really, I want you to show me I'm wrong.

I am really twisted on this request. Normally, I'd think that I would vote yes on this request, but almost everything in this request seems to be shouting to me to vote no. I have a lot of faith in you as a person and in your admin role and normally I don't care as much about the request itself, but I think this might be the first request where I do. I have no idea where the excess of emoticons come from, but they remove the seriousness a lot and may lead to voter influencing in a way they shouldn't. For me, a request is free to be done in the way the user deems fit, but the voting part should be the neutral part. The first word of the request, which is the title of the function, is already written wrongly. I do agree that the community is too dead and many special users, like me, are too inactive, so new blood might be needed. I also agree that it would be good if some rules are applied less strictly. That all being said, I don't see how this request would change anything to that. To solve strictness, you would need votes on the rules, or votes on how they should be interpretted/applied. Something I've noticed over the years is that rules are applied in the way the strictest of the admins does. I consider myself pretty laid back, but I'd see on my watch people still being treated in the most strict way, simply because another admin was on who had more strict views (and those views are within range of the rules). Within the rules, admins have a large margin for interpretation, but the treshold that triggers action is each time the most strict one, I don't see how you being a bcrat would change that. - Greets Peace'n Hugs (talk) (blog) 13:04, December 31, 2018 (UTC)

I see that my approach with this request was not the right way to go about it. It was merely meant to serve as a kind of example of the fact that I seek to loosen a a few things up a little. A few emoticons on a request should not be a big deal, at least not in my opinion. I will seek to advocate a much more uniform way of enforcing the rules. DisgustingWastelander (talk) 00:01, January 1, 2019 (UTC)

Just to kill this idea of things are "dying" dead. We've constantly been getting around a million views a day for quite some time - which is about as well as we ever do. The wiki has allegedly been dying since long before I came here, and no amount of claiming it is dying will make it so. Agent c (talk) 23:04, December 31, 2018 (UTC)

Not trying to be a dick here, but I would really like to see where it shows we get around a million views a day. Or is that just some Admin type only thing, with tools? And by dying I think it means the wiki itself or its usefulness, just it's administration and it's stagnation and pollution. But that's just my opinion or view on it. Fo4Sword of Wonders That's why no one will remember your name... 23:32, December 31, 2018 (UTC)
If you are an admin of a site on Fandom, you can view Special:AdminDashboard, which shows how many views the site had within the day. Algorithms say that the past four days there have been around a million views in here. ☢ Energy X ☣ 23:39, December 31, 2018 (UTC)

There's also a daily email update you can sign up for. I do not believe this is admin only. Agent c (talk) 01:55, January 1, 2019 (UTC)
When I say dead I am not talking about the wiki getting views. I am talking about the community. Engagement from users. When we first got the Discord server it was, compared to now, flourishing. Over time, due to tons of uncertainty, disagreements, drama and constant conflicts, the regulars started fading away. Electing me as bureaucrat will not solve these issues, but I intend to be a steadfast leader that will listed to the community. I think a lot of people can agree that two bureaucrats is not enough, plus one of them is not even active in chat (no problem there Jspoel, keep doing what you do). DisgustingWastelander (talk) 00:01, January 1, 2019 (UTC)
Then my response is simple, to quote the song: "Fix it dear Liza". If you believe there is a problem with engagement, do something about it - plenty of users (including myself) did so without a fancy title. I think its clear you're asking for a butter knife when its a nail that needs hammering in - not only is it the wrong tool for the job, there's no way to solve the perceived problem with it. Agent c (talk) 01:55, January 1, 2019 (UTC)

Response to StormRider71

You say you want talented editors in the Crat position. I have to ask what you put in a talented editor. I currently have 8000 edits and edited consistently throughout 2017. I have uploaded several hundred images to the wiki. I know my way around the wiki very well, and it has for a long time been my primary reason for sticking around. DisgustingWastelander (talk) 04:07, January 1, 2019 (UTC)

Before I could vote one way or another, I would like to see some substance to your claims of operating in the best interest of the wiki. The "meat" of your approach, if you would.

Obviously the core of your campaign is to improve community engagement and retain active users. How specifically would you plan to do that? What are some specific examples of policy you would be able to enforce/interpret as a bureaucrat that could not be done be a lower tier admin? Often major shifts in policy or stance are performed by an open community vote, such as this very vote. There have been countless changes and shifts made to the how's and why's the of the wiki, all suggested by regular users absent any authority beyond an interest in improving the wiki in someway. What sorts of changes would you foresee yourself making that would be significant enough to merit your position of bureaucrat but could not just be done as community votes per issue?

In terms of the strictness of rules, what specifically would you intend to do? Remove rules, lower punishments, suggest mods and admins ignore current policies? It's great to want to see the community more active, but what immediate changes would you make? If answered, I would prefer the response be more nuanced than "I would consider each of those options." With no authority, I or any other user, could consider these topics. I would like to know exactly what you plan to do.

What would you do to inject life into to the community beyond loosening up the joint? If it's "dying" now (although Agent c disputes that above) how do you plan to use the authority of bureaucrat to draw in new users or engage casual browsers in such a way as to foster interest in the community?

At this point, voting seems like a forgone conclusion. But I do see a few of the regular users, well as your fellow admins, split on the topic. That has my interest peaked enough to at least wonder what it is you intend to do. Without naming names, I'm sure they can speak up or reiterate if so inclined, but there's at least a few users questioning whether this proposal read like a popularity contest rather than a legitimate request. And having read through your "Why" section as well as your responses to various posts above, I have not seen many replies that actually detail what it is you want to do. Thank you for your time The Dyre Wolf (talk) 09:52, January 1, 2019 (UTC)

The rights that come with bureaucrat are simply the ability to give rights to other users. Those rights will not allow me to make changes and to improve the community alone. But with bureaucrat comes a certain amount of responsibility. You are a user with the highest rank attainable. You are a leader. This is partly why I am running. I feel I am suited for being one of those who approve community votes, organize things happening on the wiki, and taking the position of a leader. It is merely a step in the direction of changing things, not what is necessarily required to make whatever changes are needed. There are lots of good initiatives we can start to stop the wiki from dying. There is social media to draw in new users. But what is much more important is to keep those users staying. In 2018 several staff members have resigned. This is a hard trend to counter, but it is needed that we work on it. Inclusiveness is everything on a wiki. My statements in my request are not why I need the rights, they merely paint of picture of my attitude and maybe intentions. To put it simply; I wish to be part of the leadership because at present we only have to users at the top and I believe I am fit for the position having been around the wiki for about two years now. DisgustingWastelander (talk) 21:33, January 2, 2019 (UTC)

Ignoring my just for fun vote, I appreciate the position you take on the chat, DW. I was a part of the community here for awhile and I have seen it go from a massive hive of activity, to a few friends chatting, to nothing, and now I barely recognize it at all. I do miss the old times where the mods were a lot less restrictive on language and having fun in general, but considering who was running things I'm not surprised. I think that you getting bc is a step in the right direction, but I honestly don't think that a big company like Fandom would appreciate a really well known game being run is more free and will not be as "inclusive" (which is a massive problem with Fallout in general but that's another discussion.) Even if you do get this position you are up against at least two people who are the cause of the reason a lot of people left in the first place. We used to have a lot of fun around here until the sysops started to be more strict with the rules, so you either will have to change them or find some way to not have some of the mods be so strict. I wish you luck, and would probably have my yes vote if I knew you well. Metal Gear Mk. II "Anything, for the family" 10:01, January 5, 2019 (UTC)
