History with the Wiki

This month marks the 10 year anniversary of my account, not including months spent as an anon before finally diving into the community. I am one of the few still active members who joined the Vault before the schism, and I have been here ever since. Early on, I spent much of my time exclusively as a social user. I cut my teeth in the old forums, blogs, news pages and all the various outlets that thrived at the the time, but I was not particularly involved in wiki affairs. Overtime, that changed and I have long since been active in forums and discussions for wiki affairs and policy.

In 2018, I was the runner up for the Nukapedian of the Year, and I was the host for the NOTY/NTV awards in 2019 and 2020. In April of 2019, I became one of the Discussion mods, and I am currently the senior Discussions mod. As a supplementary guide for new Discussions users, I made the Discussion Dweller's Survival Guide, and after experiencing an introduction in to moderation which was less than ideal or informative, I prepared the Discussions Overseer’s Handbook as a guide for incoming moderators. I have had to see folks of just about every caliber while moderating the platform, issuing both warnings and bans. You can browse many of them here, on our moderation alerts page. I have assisted with the TVA, though only in a minor capacity when compared to the current headmaster. And, one of the aspects I consider most important for any staff member, I am active very active in the security desk, communicating with other staff members on a wide range of topics ranging from eye-rolling to panic button. Most recently, I was the Nukapedia liaison when we needed to reach out to the official Bethesda discord server which recently opened up.

Making the petition

There is the obvious, and unfortunately growing, need for admins. But beyond that, there has long since been a need for an admin team which is active and knowledgeable across the whole of the wiki, as well as a larger roster of admin who are willing to handle community interactions (good and bad). Staff burnout, especially within the administrators, is always a bit of a problem. Volunteers are given a whole community to manage, which requires not just dedication but support. At the very least, support should easily be found in the form of other admin who willing to share the burden, but as someone who has now had two years to observe the staff channels, many of our admin were absent. Our admin roster, now even thinner, does the remaining members no service. While I am a competent and capable editor, speaking with others and helping out with the sorts of behind the scenes is an area where I can be most valuable as an admin.

Speaking more directly about the lack of diversity which predates recent staff resignations, there are no staff members at the admin or crat level who meet the requirements to run for Discussions moderator. This year's admin roster does not have enough posts combined to meet the requirements for mod, and yes, that includes the admins who have resigned. And unfortunately, even if this were horseshoes or hand grenades, it would not matter in the face of the roughly 1000 extra posts needed. Our crat, Richie, is the closest in terms of post count, but not activity, with no posts since November of last year. And none of that should be taken as judgmental. Not everyone wants to engage in a forum, and they should not have to; however, over the course of several years, the uniformity in admin background and interest has contributed to a series of community issues. Problems which might have been brushed off, were instead exacerbated when admin, who are essentially strangers, had to step in as the final word or only acting bodies. Coming from Discussions, I would be able to help mitigate that issue.

Meeting the requirements

  • I have made at least 2000 edits in the article, category, module or template namespace. In addition to these, I have a healthy host of edits from the old forums, blogs, and polls.
  • I have been continuously active at this wiki for three months (and then some).
  • I have no failed rights requests.
  • I have held the position of patroller for over two months, beginning in September 2020.
  • I have never been site-blocked or chat-banned for any period of time.

Additionally, since I noted the lack crossover from the long time admin team in the realm of discussions, I feel it is worth mentioning I have just under 18,000 posts on discord (not counting those lost in the reset). As an admin, that count would place me as the second most active current admin or crat, and it exceeds the 5000 post minimum to qualify for Chat Mod.

Endorsement

Look for Bleep's blessing shortly.

I first began interacting with Dyre in February/March of 2019. A lot of folks who will be voting on this thread won't remember that time, but it was a turbulent period in Wiki history, not unlike current conditions, where staff burnout and turnover was quite high. During that sixth month stretch that followed, the Admin team realized that we had shied too far away from actively communicating with and interacting in community spaces. We came to this realization because of vocal feedback from many users within the community, and because of internal turmoil with staff leaks and unprofessional behavior in staff spaces. Dyre was, at that time, one of the most vocal members of this group of community members. Admittedly, at the time when I returned to wiki activity, things were quite bad, and I turned to listen to the community, and strongly pushed for other members of staff to also do so that we could determine, approach, and resolve issues with the disconnect between the community and wiki staff. Dyre cut through the mutual distrust, anger, and resentment, to offer levelheaded, detailed, well thought out, and insightful feedback and suggestions during the stage where I was advocating for community input for changes. This caught mine, and other staff members attention, on a contributive volunteer gaming wiki it is rare to find individuals who are capable of composing well reasoned arguments, and are able to offer palpable, practical feedback to make significant changes for the community. Dyre is undoubtedly an excellent candidate in this category, and once he accumulated enough discussions posts, his rights request to become a discussions moderator was an easy yes. Since being granted special rights, Dyre has been one of two extraordinarily active discussions moderators, on a consistent basis for the past two years. He has provided consistent, level feedback in staff issues, policy changes, and we communicate regularly outside of staff spaces about wiki/community issues. Dyre has a strong presence in the discord, as he mentioned above, he has more discord posts currently than just about any other active staff members. Impressively enough, while Dyre has always been focused on handling the community issues on any given day, he has over the past two years set aside time to make substantive, dedicated edits where needed.

I have not always agreed with Dyre, there have been times where I have thought he was overly aggressive, or combative, or allowed biases to influence his approach to discussions. But that is human, and I have not seen that behavior at all in the past year. Dyre is a strong candidate on all fronts, and I fully and emphatically endorse him for Admin, I know that he will dedicate his time to making the wiki as a whole, and the community around it, a better place, and easier and more accessible to use. ---bleep196- (talk) 15:36, 12 June 2021 (UTC)

  4. Yes Easy yes vote for me, Dyre is an amazing member of this community and would be a fantastic admin. —Katy Webb Icon vaulttec A better future, underground! 16:16, 12 June 2021 (UTC)
  5. Yes I joined the wiki shortly after Dyre became Discussions moderator, and all of my interactions with him since then have always been positive. He is excellent at resolving conflicts and always stays level-headed when doing so. He also helped massively when I made my first steps towards becoming a discussions moderator last year, and has helped me settling into the role. I think it would be very valuable to have an admin who knows what's going on in discussions, and can help build bridges between all parts of the wiki. The Appalachian (talk) 16:17, 12 June 2021 (UTC)
  6. Yes Strong yes. I look forward to having Dyre's perspective and strengths to complement the admin team. Dyre's experience, poise, critical thinking, work ethic, and sharp wit are but a few of many traits that make him an exemplary candidate. This application has my full support. -kdarrow Pickman heart take her for a spin! 16:36, 12 June 2021 (UTC)

  8. Yes Dyre has consistently shown that he is not just an active, positive influence in the community but is also capable of holding it together despite the chaos (while remaining sane!). Definite yes. Saxhleel12 (talk) 17:19, 12 June 2021 (UTC)
  9. Yes Dyre is definitely active both in discussions and chat, and I believe he regularly edits the wiki as well. He easily exceeds both the baseline requirements for an administrator, and I believe that he passes closer scrutiny as well. He has always been friendly and active, and would be a fine addition to the admin team. Sigmund Fraud (talk) 17:29, 12 June 2021 (UTC)
