Fleeing is a character status that means the subject has decided to retreat.

Fallout, Fallout 2, and Fallout Tactics[]

Dunkirk! Dunkirk! I'm pulling out!— A brave Brotherhood paladin running away

In Fallout and Fallout 2, this is referred to as running away and only happens in combat, when the AI decides it has taken too much damage and runs away (accompanied by various unique float messages).

In Fallout Tactics enemies generally do not flee, but can retreat.

Fallout 3 and Fallout: New Vegas[]

A character may flee if:

  • They sustain too much damage (I.E. when fighting raiders),
  • the player character attacks a friendly NPC (other friendly NPCs will flee),
  • Super mutant captives will run and eventually flee,
  • the character has been frightened by an environmental effect or encounter.

A fleeing character will not speak to the character, and a message will appear saying "<name here> is fleeing."

Eventually, after danger subsides, an NPC may stop fleeing. Fleeing enemies may eventually regain their courage and attack again if left alone.

Fallout 4 and Fallout 76[]
