YellowRepulsionField

Two yellow generator force field in Fallout 2

A repulsion device is any security measure that physically prevents or punishes unauthorized access. They confine captives to a particular zone or make a person unable to perform a specific action. There are several types of repulsion devices like laser tripwires and pulse fields, but the most commonly used and the most famous is the force field. They appear throughout the Fallout series.

Electronic security systems[]

A jolt of electricity directed at an individual using a computer without access.

Force field[]

Main article: Force field

Force fields are projected photonic resonance barrier that prevents access to an area, or used to stop projectiles from traveling in a specific direction. Usually a wall of energy, they have many applications and varying degrees of strength and can either completely block a passage, injure, or sometimes kill a person passing through. Some were developed by Big Mountain Research and Development Center.[1]

Force fields have been adapted to be projected remotely both from a stand alone device or projected to another object. An example of a projected wall of energy is the remotely deployed one surrounding Project Purity that the Enclave set up following the seizure of the project. Another example is the force field generator the Zetan aliens have developed that can be easily deployed in combat situations.

Examples of devices that have their own shield within them are the Imposter Sheepsquatch assaultron, which is capable of powering such a device on its own, and the power armor worn by Colter, which draws it's energy shield from the Cola-cars arena. Examples of countering these shields include the large mobile electrical pylons that turn the user into a conduit of energy that can counter the shield energy, and in the Overboss' case water, as his power armor isn't waterproof.

Gun ports[]

Automated weapons are sometimes hidden within a structures, if/when security systems are triggered they will activate.

Laser grid[]

Solid beams of light act as fencing to block access was a option to ward off intruders. A protective barrier utilizing red laser beams is commonly used in many places in Appalachia.

Pacification field[]

Main article: Pacification field

A unique emitter broadcasted field used in Big MT at The Think Tank dome that prevents any violence towards the Think Tank by their lobotomized victims.

Pulse field[]

Pulse Field
Main article: Electromagnetic pulse

An electromagnetic pulse defensive grid used to disable and/or damage electronics, in this case American power armor units, was constructed by the Chinese to protect their base of operations in the Battle of Anchorage. Shown in the simulation to cause fatal electrocution, powerful EMP has minimal effects on biological systems.

Radar fence[]

If evidence is correct, the one who built it - is ME!- -It keeps anything with a disembodied brain INSIDE - like US - and anything without a brain... also INSIDE!- -It is the ULTIMATE DEFENSE against Communist aggression. There'll be no infectious ideas on MY watch!-"Doctor Borous

A radar-guided repulsive field around the perimeter of Big MT used in conjunction with their teleportation matrix to prevent the escape of the Think Tank. It was erected by Doctor Mobius, potentially from schematics created by Doctor Borous, it keeps the Courier from leaving the Big MT until they retrieve their brain and finish the Old World Blues main questline.

Locations[]

Fallout 76[]

  • Fort Defiance, access to the fourth floor is through an elevator protected by a laser grid.
  • Riverside Manor, the basement is protected by a laser grid that is deactivated by wearing the Veil of Secrets.
  • Sam Blackwell's bunker, access to the interior portion of the bunker is protected by a laser grid controlled by a handprint reader.
  • Vault 51, access to several sections of the vault are restricted by laser grids that require a sufficiently high Overseer rank to pass through.

Notes[]

Force fields in Fallout 3 can mostly be disabled using nearby terminals with 75 or 100 Science.
