I’m sorry, my companion, but no. We all have our own destinies, and yours culminates here. I would not rob you of that.

Fawkes is a super mutant residing in the Capital Wasteland in Fallout 3. He is a possible companion of the Lone Wanderer.

Background[]

An anomaly even among his brethren, whereas the majority of mutants found in the former capital city are aggressive, barely intelligent brutes, the one named "Fawkes" proves to be an educated, soft-spoken person that keeps his violent impulses in check. One of the original dwellers of Vault 87, Fawkes says he can still remember glimpses of his past, of the Vault in its prime, with scientists and regular dwellers walking through the halls. However, these glimpses are all that remains, and the inability to recall his former human identity torments him to no end.[1][2][3]

In truth, Fawkes' origin is much the same as any other super mutant spawned within Vault 87: he was captured by the renegade group of mutants that overpowered the scientists and was exposed to the modified strain of the Forced Evolutionary Virus used in the Vault's Evolutionary Experimentation Program. However, unlike other victims of the mutation process, one managed to survive with his mind intact. Where others would succumb to the excruciating pain of the transformation and become insane, he retained enough of his intelligence to be capable of cognizant speech immediately after the process completed. He was branded a failure by his captors and locked up in one of the old isolation wards in the Vault's medical wing. Where normally he would be killed, the super mutants considered him different enough to keep him alive as a curiosity.[1][4] However, along with an increased lifespan to the degree of living for over 200 years,[5] the mutation caused by the FEV resulted in a warping of existing neural pathways, leading to extensive damage and severe long-term memory loss.[2]

The mutant coped with the loneliness he felt from being trapped in his cell for decades on end after he discovered a working terminal left in the isolation room he was imprisoned in. Thanks to its connection to the Vault's data mainframe, he was able to extensively study history, literature, science and other subjects, as the book files gave him a wealth of knowledge and insight. In fact, it is from the history books that the mutant took his name of "Fawkes", inspired by the record of a man willing to fight and die for his beliefs, a sentiment Fawkes agreed with. However, sometime shortly before the Lone Wanderer left Vault 101 in 2277, Fawkes' super mutant captors discovered the terminal and his attachment to the knowledge it offered, and destroyed it out of a cruel desire to torment him further.[6][7][8][9]

Daily schedule[]

Fawkes lives in Isolation Room 05, serving as his cell in Vault 87. If he is released during Finding the Garden of Eden, he can be found afterward at the Museum of History inside the lobby. Later on, if one behaved peacefully and/or friendly to Fawkes in Vault 87, he will later appear outside the front gate of Raven Rock during The American Dream.

If Broken Steel is installed and the Lone Wanderer activates Project Purity themselves, he can generally be found either in the Citadel in the room with Sawbones or in the Jefferson Memorial.

Quests[]

Companion[]

  • Fawkes can be recruited as a companion after escaping Raven Rock during The American Dream and only while the player character has Good Karma.
    • Fawkes has the same response to trying to hire him with either Evil or Neutral Karma.[10]
  • If the player character's Karma is too low, or if they fire him at any time, Fawkes can be later found wandering around the entrance to Underworld in the Museum of History. Fawkes may also return if left on his own for a significant length of time.
  • Fawkes cannot be equipped with different clothing, and he remains in his tattered Vault 87 jumpsuit.
  • Fawkes is highly skilled in all categories of combat including (Small Guns, Big Guns, Energy Weapons, Explosives, Melee Weapons and Unarmed), though his selection of weapons is limited.

Inventory[]

Apparel Weapon Other items On death
Fawkes' Gatling laser
Fawkes' super sledge¹
Fawkes' sledgehammer
¹Becomes unobtainable if not acquired before starting The American Dream

Fawkes is limited in the weapons he can use and will only equip weapons from the following list. He will not equip any unique versions of the weapons below, including:

Notes[]

  • By activating the terminal by the door of Fawkes' room in Vault 87, and using the "Identify Specimen" function, it will be discovered that the cell's inhabitant was called "Specimen D624." A different terminal in a room close to Fawkes' cell contains data on five specimens, stating that D624 was a female. However, the terminal also states that all specimens were terminated, meaning Fawkes could not be D624.
  • After he moves to Underworld, Fawkes is counted as a resident as he will become hostile if the player character attacks or kills any of the ghouls there, but like most residents of towns, he will forgive them after 72 in-game hours.
  • Fawkes' super sledge can be obtained from him in Vault 87 after releasing him from isolation by asking to trade equipment, wherein the weapon will be in his inventory.
  • Any items given to Fawkes before being ambushed by Colonel Autumn in Vault 87 will be gone when he is encountered again outside Raven Rock.
  • Fawkes' model was included in the game files for Fallout: New Vegas, however, his Vault 87 jumpsuit does not have a texture.
  • If Fawkes is provoked and then spoken to, he will say, "It saddens me that it has come to this. Farewell, my friend." and then turns hostile.
  • If Fawkes is a companion, along with Dogmeat, repeatedly hitting him will cause a never-ending fight between him and Dogmeat. The player character can run away from the fight, hide, and then wait it out. This will cause Fawkes to become a normal companion again.
  • If the player character frees Fawkes but retrieves the G.E.C.K. by themselves, Fawkes will comment on how foolish they were for risking their lives.
  • Despite the Brotherhood of Steel's intense hatred of super mutants, they will not attack Fawkes on sight if he is brought to the Citadel, which he can comment on.
  • Fawkes may sometimes block doorways with his immense stature, which can be made worse by the presence of Dogmeat. The most common example is likely that of the vacant house in Megaton, where, after sleeping in the upstairs bedroom, Fawkes will be standing directly in the doorframe. If Dogmeat is also present, it will usually be behind Fawkes, pushing against him to get closer to the player character (despite the fact that Fawkes will be incapable of moving much further in the tiny room). Getting through both of them blocking the way will often require a large amount of pushing from the player character.
  • Fawkes' Damage Resistance is actually considered an in-game effect, albeit it is unnamed and goes by the Editor Id "MQ08FawkesDR" and has the Form Code "00079A3A," according to the G.E.C.K.
  • Fawkes' Carry Weight is maximized at 229 pounds.
  • Fawkes has the most HP of all companions and almost ten times as much as a behemoth with Broken Steel installed.
  • Broken Steel Fawkes is one of three companions that can be sent into the irradiated chamber in the Jefferson Memorial to activate the purifier during Take it Back!, along with Charon and Sergeant RL-3. His response to agree or refuse depends on if Broken Steel is[11] or is not[12] installed.
    • If Broken Steel is installed and Fawkes is an active companion during Take It Back! and is sent to start the purifier, he is referred to as a hero in the epilogue, then when the game resumes, Fawkes will be waiting in the infirmary at the Citadel.

Notable quotes[]

Appearances[]

Fawkes appears in Fallout 3, Fallout Shelter Online, Fallout: The Board Game, and Fallout: Wasteland Warfare.

Behind the scenes[]

  • Fawkes' voice actor, Wes Johnson, gave an interview in December 2008 during which he made a joke that insinuated Fawkes was a woman before turning into a super mutant.[13] Lead designer Emil Pagliarulo confirmed that Wes was mistaken in saying this and that Fawkes was always originally a man. He was quoted as saying, "No, Fawkes was absolutely a male. This was a mistake. Wes gave an interview and he was mistaken. Trust me, Fawkes is and was male."[14]
  • Much of the random dialogue heard from Fawkes as one wanders around with him can be heard as simple wasteland survival advice. However, there are also references to his practice of Zen philosophy, examples being, "Be aware of the present moment" and "There is safety in mindfulness."
  • Fawkes' battle cry of "Wake up... Time to die!" mirrors a quote from Leon to Deckard in the film Blade Runner.
  • When asked about his name, Fawkes answers that it was taken from a historical entry on his terminal, "The name comes from a man who was willing to fight and die for what he believed in." Fawkes' stated name and this line indicates that his namesake is Guy Fawkes, an English Catholic who participated in the Gunpowder Plot, a failed assassination attempt on King James I of England.
  • Despite being one of two companions in Fallout 3 that requires Good Karma to be recruited, along with Star Paladin Cross, the game files reveal that Fawkes himself has Neutral Karma.
  • In the backstory for "V", the protagonist of Alan Moore's V for Vendetta, he was also locked in a cell with the number 5, and his signature outfit includes a Guy Fawkes mask.

The human Fawkes[]

A series of unused holotapes that were meant to be found in Vault 87, but ended up cut from the final release, shed possible light on the identity of Fawkes. These unused assets take the form of diary entrees and progress over an unspecified amount of time. Although Fawkes shares the same voice as most of the Fallout 3's super mutants, he is explicitly defined within the game's dialogue files as being the speaker in the final recording.

Though nothing is left to document why these recordings were not included in the final version of the game, Fawkes' demonstrated intelligence does not appear to be present in the fifth holotape recording; this is consistent with his statement that he had to work to become as intelligent and well-spoken again as he was at the time of meeting the Lone Wanderer.

Security officer Shelton Delacroix began to record a personal diary at the behest of the staff of Vault 87. He was glad to have been assigned to one of the newer Vaults, and that he was guarding the laboratory level rather then the reactor room.[15] It was not long in his duties that strange noises coming from the experimentation chambers began to make their way to his post. When he asked about the noise he was told that it was the animals they were testing on. Out of morbid curiosity, and boredom of pacing back and forth down the hallway, he wondered what exactly they were doing to them, and decided to investigate further.[16]

One day two of his fellow security staff, Sykes and Cossler, dragged an unconscious man from the dorms into the labs. When he asked them what for they glared at him, angry at him for getting involved in something that he didn't have authority to. They warned him not to tell anyone what he saw, or else, with Sykes patting his 10mm. When they left he snuck into the containment room and was shocked at the deformed thing that had once been a man. His organs on the surface of his body, as if they were trying to push through his now green and brown skin. The horrible stench emanating in the room caused him to stagger out into the hallway, coming to the realization that the monster he saw was one of the missing people. Having no other outlet for his horror he recorded it in his logs, this an action that would be his undoing.[17]

Upon finding one of his older recordings, Delacroix became a wanted man. A friend in security warned him to run before they grabbed him, he ran away and hid in the reactor level. With the realization that he had no where to run, nor anyone to turn to he recorded what would be his last thoughts about his wife in Dorm E that he loved her, just as security captured him.[18] Afterward, he would be mutated into a super mutant, now with no memory of who or what he was. He managed to record one final recording, before destroying his recorder.[19]

Bugs[]

  • PCPC Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 Xbox 360Xbox 360 Fawkes is unable to use any unique weapons, including unique versions of weapons he is otherwise able to use (e.g. Eugene vs. the Minigun). This is caused by the list determining what weapons Fawkes is able to use missing the entries for these unique weapons. [verified]
  • PCPC Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 If you do not free Fawkes and instead take the G.E.C.K. yourself then return after escaping Raven Rock and talk to him the speech options will be the same as if he had come to rescue you from Raven Rock, ("Fawkes, what are you doing out here?"). [verified]
  • Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 If you kill Fawkes after entering Broken Steel his body may follow you to Adams Air Force Base and back to the Citadel after being taken back via the Vertibird. [verified]
  • PCPC Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 When Fawkes kills something, his Gatling laser may continue to play the sounds, even after he has holstered it. This can be fixed by saving and then loading the saved game. [verified]
    • Other fixes include engaging him in conversation and getting him to fire the weapon again or fast traveling to another location.
  • Xbox 360Xbox 360 Fawkes will "not speak" to the player. Conversation dialogue initiates but he doesn't say anything. Pressing the "Activate" button doesn't help, making it impossible to trade equipment, fire him, etc. This forces the player to kill Fawkes to obtain the equipment given to him. [verified]
  • PCPC Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 Xbox 360Xbox 360 Fawkes will not be in the Museum of History after you fire him. He will sometimes be waiting for you at the entrance to The Pitt DLC. [verified]
  • PCPC Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 Fawkes may have two super sledges in his inventory. [verified]
  • PCPC Xbox 360Xbox 360 Upon freeing Fawkes, if you choose to retrieve the G.E.C.K. yourself and do not talk to Fawkes after doing so, he will not appear outside of Raven Rock. He will instead be waiting in Vault 87. and will react in the same manner that he would as if he were standing outside of Raven Rock. [verified]
  • Xbox 360Xbox 360 When fired right before turning on the purifier, Fawkes will sometimes wait in the inaccessible area above the entrance to the Jefferson Memorial. Firing Fawkes anywhere in the Jefferson Memorial will result in this happening. [verified]

Residing as a prisoner in Vault 87, Fawkes is one of two "humanized" Super Mutants. When F.E.V. mutated him, a little more of his human side remained. His demeanor and attitude differ greatly from his fellow Super Mutants. His lack of bloodlust and nonaddledIn-game spelling, punctuation and/or grammar mind sets him apart from his brethren. Unfortunately for Fawkes, this has made him hated by the other Super Mutants. Not knowing what exactly to do with this "half-breed," the others have relegated him to a tiny observation cell in the Vault 87 lab area. There he sits and ponders his fate, waiting for someone to come along and free him."

  2. 2.0 2.1 The Lone Wanderer: "Do you remember who you were?"
Fawkes: "I don't remember enough to tell you everything about my former self. My metamorphosis destroyed a good deal of my long term memory. However, I can recall being in this place when it wasn't the macabre laboratory that it's become. I remember walking around this place and seeing other humans in white lab coats and blue jumpsuits. I wish I could find out more, but the personnel information for the Vault wasn't in the mainframe for some reason. I feel like my identity is so close to me... I can almost see myself as a human but can't recollect the details. It's maddening."
    (Fawkes' dialogue)
  3. The Lone Wanderer: "How do you know the layout of this place?"
Fawkes: "These hallways are familiar to me... I think I used to be a resident here in better times. I wish I could remember more, but I'm afraid it's all a blur. As for the G.E.C.K., it's always rested where it does now. The foolish Super Mutants don't even know what they have."
    (Fawkes' dialogue)
  4. The Lone Wanderer: "So, tell me more about yourself."
Fawkes: "I was born here, in this place. I don't mean that in the literal sense of course. All I can remember is the excruciating pain that tore through me as my body underwent the rapid physical changes. For most, this moment is what severs the grip on their minds. They become barely a shell of their former selves. I was different. When I spoke to them, they immediately branded me "another failure" and had me placed here as a curiosity."
    (Fawkes' dialogue)
  5. The Lone Wanderer: "Why have you been imprisoned?"
Fawkes: "Because I'm a curiosity; an anomaly. They don't know why I'm different than they are and I think it fascinates them. All of the locked rooms in the medical wing contain failed experiments that they created."
The Lone Wanderer: "How come they've kept you alive?"
Fawkes: "I think when I was created, something went wrong and I didn't come out like they planned. Just like the other things in this makeshift cell block, we're the results of what they would call failed experiments if they were smart enough."
    (Fawkes' dialogue)
  6. The Lone Wanderer: "It's amazing how well you can speak."
Fawkes: "Yes. I suppose it is. When my captors placed me here, they were too stupid to realize this room contained a working terminal. I've spent all my life teaching myself to read and speak based on the information stored on the Vault's Mainframe. Ironic, isn't it? Surrounded by the world's history and yet my world consists of this tiny room."
    (Fawkes' dialogue)
  7. The Lone Wanderer: "That's quite an unusual name."
Fawkes: "It was taken from a historical entry in the computer. The name comes from a man who was willing to fight and die for what he believed in. I felt it was appropriate given my circumstances."
    (Fawkes' dialogue)
  8. The Lone Wanderer: "So, you've been stuck in that cell ever since?"
Fawkes: "Yes. I've never been anywhere else. I used to mark the passage of time, but after a few years, it didn't seem to matter anymore. The only thing that prevented me from going insane was the working access point to the Vault Mainframe in my makeshift cell."
    (Fawkes' dialogue)
  9. The Lone Wanderer: "How did you become so articulate?"
Fawkes: "The terminal in my cell used to connect with Vault 87's mainframe. That gave me access to the history, literature, science and fiction book files. I used this extensive database of works to better myself and my understanding of everything around me. It was only recently the others caught me using the terminal and destroyed it to torment me."
    (Fawkes' dialogue)
  10. The Lone Wanderer: "Care to join me, Fawkes? I would appreciate your assistance."
Fawkes: "My friend, I am saddened to hear that you have turned away from a noble path. Return to me when you have learned to take right action, and I will walk with you."
    (Fawkes' dialogue)
  11. The Lone Wanderer: "Fawkes, I need you to start the purifier. The code is 2-1-6."
Fawkes: "Ah, of course. My immunity to radiation makes me a far better candidate for surviving in there. I would say that your destiny lies within that chamber, but you have already altered mine. The least I can do is return the favor. Cycle the airlock, and we'll put an end to this."
    (Fawkes' dialogue)
  12. The Lone Wanderer: "Fawkes, I need you to go into that chamber and turn on the purifier."
Fawkes: "I’m sorry, my companion, but no. We all have our own destinies, and yours culminates here. I would not rob you of that."
    (Fawkes' dialogue)
