Fallout is an upcoming television series based on the Fallout series of video games. In July 2020, it was confirmed that Amazon Studios had licensed the rights to a TV adaptation of the games, to be developed by Kilter Films' Jonathan Nolan and Lisa Joy, creators of HBO's Westworld, for Prime Video.[1]

Development

Trademark history

A previous attempt at a live-action adaptation of the Fallout series was a film adaptation in development at Interplay Films between 1998 and 2000. The project was eventually canceled.

An initial registration for the Fallout mark for use in a TV series was submitted to the United States Patent and Trademark office in February 2009. This registration has since been extended the maximum permitted 5 times (the original filing and subsequent renewals last 6 months if the mark is unused), without a Fallout TV series appearing.[2]

On January 8, 2013, Bethesda Softworks re-registered a Fallout trademark for "Entertainment services in the nature of an on-going television program set in a post-nuclear apocalyptic world."[3]

Amazon series

After months of negotiations, the rights to the TV series adaptation were purchased by Amazon in 2020.[1]

Regarding the series, Nolan and Joy stated, "Fallout is one of the greatest game series of all time. Each chapter of this insanely imaginative story has cost us countless hours we could have spent with family and friends. So we're incredibly excited to partner with Todd Howard and the rest of the brilliant lunatics at Bethesda to bring this massive, subversive, and darkly funny universe to life with Amazon Studios."

Todd Howard, game director at Bethesda Game Studios, said, "Over the last decade, we looked at many ways to bring Fallout to the screen, but it was clear from the moment I first spoke with Jonah and Lisa a few years ago, that they and the team at Kilter were the ones to do it right. We're enormous fans of their work and couldn't be more excited to work with them and Amazon Studios."[1]

A teaser for the series was released on July 2, 2020, revealing Amazon and Kilter Films' involvement. Plot details for the series are currently unknown, and it is unclear whether the series will be an adaptation of a game or a new story set within the Fallout world.[4]

In an August 2020 interview, Emil Pagliarulo stated that Bethesda set up lore information and guidelines for the series' writers, but afterwards, the writers "go off and do their things," as they are the experts in writing for television.[5]
