Explosives is a Fallout 3 skill which replaces the Traps and Throwing skills from previous games. Its governing primary statistic is Perception.

The skill influences the player's skill to handle all kinds of explosive devices, such as mines or grenades. The higher it is, the more damage is caused by such weapons and in the case of enemy mines, the more time you have to disarm them before detonation. In addition, range and accuracy of grenade throws are directly related to the Explosives skill.

Specific levels of Explosives are also required to disarm certain explosive-based traps.

The Hub is a major trading city in Fallout. It is a large community of traders, barterers, gamblers, and other interesting scum. The Hub is a stopoff point for caravans north to Shady Sands and Junktown and south to the Boneyard. The wide variety of people passing through ensures that there is always something interesting going on. The Hub was founded in 2093 by a man named Angus, who set up camp around a filthy oasis in the desert, and proceeded to begin trading with other settlements. In 2096, a man called Harold rose to the level of a caravan boss in the Hub. His caravans suffered occasional attacks in the wastes, but Harold's caravan outfit survived and prospered... until the mutant attacks begin to pick up a few years later.

Charon is a possible ghoul companion NPC in Fallout 3. He is noticeably larger than other human or ghoul characters, standing a full head taller than a normal NPC, and not the talkative type. Brainwashed as a child, he is blindly loyal to the holder of his contract. Originally, Charon resides in the Underworld working as a bouncer in The Ninth Circle for his employer Ahzrukhal. Once the player has acquired Charon's contract in exchange for either money or a favour, his now ex-employer soon learns that his blind loyalty does not extend beyond the end of the contractual relationship.

A water chip is a device which regulates the filtering and recycling systems of a water purifier and monitors the output for any contamination. It is a standard piece of equipment included in all Vault-Tec Vaults.

The events of Fallout begin after Vault 13's water chip breaks, and the only means to compensate for the diminishing water supplies is to leave and find a new chip. The original Vault Dweller, but not the first to leave the vault, is sent on the quest to find a new one in 2161. After encountering many people and places in the wastes of southern California, he finds a suitable replacement chip in Vault 12, the vault underneath the Necropolis, and returns it to Vault 13.

Ironically, due to a mix-up with shipping orders, Vault 8 received the additional water chips that Vault 13 had ordered in place of their second allotted Garden of Eden Creation Kit, which went to Vault 13. On the second level of Vault 8, hundreds of them can be found and taken, though they aren't very valuable for monetary bartering.

Activated Purifier
Broken Steel is the third Fallout 3 add-on and was released on May 5, 2009 for Xbox Live and Games for Windows Live. In this add-on, the Lone Wanderer joins the ranks of the Brotherhood of Steel to rid the Capital Wasteland of the Enclave remnants once and for all. In addition to amending the main quest to let players continue their adventures after the end of the main quest and raising the level cap to 30, Broken Steel's own quest line deals with the aftermath of the events at Jefferson Memorial.

Joshua Eric Sawyer is a video game designer active in the role playing game genre. After Chris Avellone left Interplay, he became the lead designer of Van Buren (the canceled Fallout 3 by Black Isle Studios) before he himself left in November 2003. At Obsidian Entertainment, he is currently the lead designer and project director of Fallout: New Vegas, a standalone game based on Fallout 3's engine and gameplay. While at Black Isle he was known for coming up with the "Ex-Presidents" project naming system. When Interplay closed down Black Isle Studios many team members ended up at Obsidian Entertainment, which would eventually come to include J.E. Sawyer.

7 MayEdit

The Followers of the Apocalypse inhabit a library in the western segment of the Boneyard. Led by Nicole, the Followers are dedicated to scholarship and to ensuring that humanity does not repeat the mistakes that led to the Great War.

While ostensibly like the Children of the Cathedral in being dedicated to the cause of spreading peace throughout the wasteland, they are suspicious of the latter's motives. Talius, a ghoul-like mutant partially exposed to FEV by the Master's forces, found refuge among the Followers, and helped them understand the true nature of the Children.

After the death of the Master, the Followers of the Apocalypse became a major influence in the newly-founded New California Republic. With the Vault Dweller's help, they gained control of the LA Boneyard.

PMV Valdez
The PMV Valdez is an old, decaying oil tanker anchored in San Francisco. It plays a pivotal role in Fallout 2 by enabling the Chosen One to travel to the Enclave Oil Rig and save the world from destruction. Despite the energy crisis, the oil tanker runs on oil, rather than fusion. It is probable that converting such a vessel was deemed too expensive (since as long as there was some oil, the payload would be valuable enough to justify the fuel cost) or simply that it was impossible due to the limitations of the fledgling fusion technology. However, while utilizing outdated technology as propulsion, the tanker is fully automated and equipped with a navigational computer secured by a door operated with a magnetic tanker FOB. Additionally, the ship is equipped with an IFF (Identify Friend or Foe) transponder, preventing Poseidon Oil defenses from sinking it.

Fo3BS Hellfire Power Armor
The Enclave Hellfire armor is a type of power armor added to Fallout 3 in the Broken Steel add-on. Worn by Enclave Hellfire troopers and regular Enclave soldiers, it is even more advanced than the Tesla power armor, offering a damage resistance on par with T-51 power armor. In contrast to the T-51b which is limited to merchant repair, the Enclave Hellfire armors can be repaired with other sets of Hellfire armor.

The albino radscorpion is a new type of radscorpion is added to Fallout 3 in the Broken Steel add-on. It is far more resistant to attacks than the giant radscorpion and deals far greater damage. While of the same size as giant radscorpions, it is milky-white in appearance and has red eyes instead of green.

The Reaver Movement is a cult of humans dedicated to the worship of technology. Unlike the Brotherhood of Steel, Reavers feel technology has an important religious signifigance. While Reavers revere technological instruments and weapons, they were not allied with the Calculator's robots, and are in fact attacked by them. Around 2198, a Reaver delegate comes to the Brotherhood of Steel Bunker Delta, bringing news that a large Calculator's robot force has all but annihilated the main Reaver camp in Newton. The Reavers' numbers were devastated by relentless attacks and they would soon be destroyed. Normally, the Brotherhood would gladly allow one enemy to destroy another, but the Reavers have something to offer - an EMP device that has a devastating effect on electronics, making it an effective weapon against the robots.

Hakunin is the kind if addled village shaman for Arroyo. His appearance is alarming, his elocution is languid yet exquisite, his every phrase is a minor riddle, and he will heal you whenever you are hurt. Humorously, due to his eccentric choice in words, the player can choose to respond with comments on the way he talks, but he doesn't seem to notice. Either everyone criticizes him for this or he just doesn't notice or care.

Tesla cannon
The Tesla cannon is a weapon that fires extremely powerful blasts of electricity, capable of knocking aircraft out of the sky with one shot. It is powered by electron charge packs. One of the quests of Fallout 3's add-on Broken Steel revolves around having to find a Tesla coil in order to help the Brotherhood of Steel build this weapon.

The tribal village of Peoria (also called Preoria) is now only a mockery of the once big city of Peoria, Illinois, located halfway between Chicago and St. Louis. After the War, only a small, primitive village is remaining here. The Whachutu tribals built their homes over a pre-War storehouse of fusion batteries, which they believe was a gateway between life and death. While they knew about the batteries, they do not understand their function. The storehouse is guarded by automated turrets and inhabited by radscorpions and giant cockroaches (considered to be "evil spirits" by the tribals).

The Thieves' Guild is a group of thieves in the Hub's Old Town led by the slightly crazed Loxley around 2161. Well trapped and hidden, their main hideout can be found in the basement of a junkie's home. The guild is loosely based on the 'old stories', as Loxley calls them, of Robin Hood and his band of merry men.

The Wattz Electronics Micromanipulator FingerStuff electronic lock pick is an item in Fallout and Fallout 2. As the name unambiguously implies, electronic lockpicks are used for cracking security on electrically-powered doors, such as those found in the Military Base or Vault 13.

Galaxy News Radio is the remnant of the pre-War Galaxy News Network. In 2277, it is run by Three Dog, who provides a commentary on the actions of the Lone Wanderer, and plays music from a selection of twenty pre-War songs. These songs all focus around 1940's American hits. This radio station plays more or less late 40s blues, pop, and some 50s rockabilly, compared to the Enclave radio who play more traditional patriotic songs.

The Resource Wars were a series of conflicts which began in April 2052 with the start of the war between the European Commonwealth and the Middle East, and ended with the Great War on October 23, 2077. Some of the conflicts include the annexation of Canada by the United States and the Chinese invasion of Alaska.

Tesla armor is an armor appearing in Fallout, Fallout 2, Fallout Tactics and Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel. It was constructed from plans left by Nikola Tesla decades before the war even started, confiscated by the United States government after his death. Though his plans looked completely insane, they worked like a charm.

M.A.R.Go.T. (short for Metro Authority Rapid Governmental Transit System), also simply called Margot, is a computer system in the Fallout 3 add-on Broken Steel. Having been in service since April 14, 2065, it watches over the Presidential metro which connects the White House with the Capitol building's East Wing and Adams Air Force Base. Apparently Margot realizes that nuclear war broke out and 200 years have passed, but this is meaningless as she states that her primary function is to protect the Metro.

The New California Rangers are technically a part of the New California Republic military, but practically a force unto themselves. They are a select group that is pledged to protect the people of the Wastes much like the Texas Rangers of old and the Desert Rangers of Nevada. The Rangers are given exceptional leeway and flexibility to deal with both the intrusion of organized crime and the operation of slavers near the borders of NCR territory. The Rangers are said to have numerous safehouses throughout the wastes, and they use these to strike at slavers outside of NCR territory (usually in the North). As expected, the two groups hate each other with a passion. NCR Rangers typically have bounties on their head, even in NCR states.

Fire ant
Fire ants are a variation of giant ants that is even more mutated than the "regular" giant bugs. Their name comes from their ability to literally breathe fire, similarly to the fire geckos from the Core Region. The fire ants were created by Doctor Lesko, a Capital Wasteland scientist, and can only be found in the area around Grayditch and Marigold station. He was attempting to return giant ants to their normal size over a couple of generations through genetic manipulation but as he reasons, one small tweak of an error has left the ants with a completely different mutation.

Miles Reese was going to be the main antagonist of Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel 2, the canceled sequel to Fallout: Brotherhood of Steel. Bordering a particular hatred for the Brotherhood of Steel, he is fueled by his wish to wage war on them and all mankind. During research he learns about the G.E.C.K and steals the prototype from the Nursery, planning to use it for creating a New Eden without humans. As Miles heads down to the Gulf of Mexico, the device starts working, leaving a trail of strange plant life all over the countryside. Arriving at the Gulf, he spends the next 5 years improving the G.E.C.K. and modifying it to his needs. However, the increased potence of the device has strange effects of the FEV-infected environment, transforming the landscape and eventually even submerging his own base in the Gulf.

The Mariposa Military Base was a top-secret United States military facility built to house Forced Evolutionary Virus research previously conducted at West Tek, located somewhere in the area of the Mariposa unincorporated community in California. The name "Mariposa" means "butterfly" in Spanish.

The construction of Mariposa started in October 2076 when large progress was made in FEV research, and the government preferred to move the project to a location under military supervision. On January 7, 2077, Major Barnett ordered transfer of all FEV research to the newly-constructed Mariposa Base, despite objections by the research team.

Along with the scientists, a military team commanded by colonel Robert Spindel, which previously monitored the experiments at West Tek was sent to Mariposa. Spindel's second-in-command was captain Roger Maxson. The FEV project was moved to Mariposa and tested on human subjects. The vats were giant tanks filled with liquid FEV. As part of the research project, human subjects were dipped inside them and then examined to learn how to control and harness the process. The experiments on humans were kept secret even from Spindel and his soldiers.

The Vaults are a series of massive underground fallout shelters developed by Vault-Tec in the mid-21st century.

Initially it appeared that the Vaults were designed to save the population of the US; however, there were not nearly enough Vaults for this purpose. The true, sinister reason is that these 'shelters' were in fact a series of sociological experiments conducted by the Enclave. Each Vault was set up with different conditions, and then observed to see how the dwellers within coped with the pressure of isolation.

It was initially intended that while the player was reading the Vault 8 records in Fallout 2, he could discover a classified file (opened with a successful Science skill roll) which explained that Vault 8 was a "control Vault," designed to hold 1000 people and to open on time. This file was intended to foreshadow the discovery of the true and sinister purpose of the Vaults.

Mutations and their causes: Radiation. The various types of mutant creatures that inhabit the wastelands were mostly created by radiation. This is where mantises, geckos, spore plants, radscorpions, brahmin and the various mutant rodent species come from. But not only animals are affected, radiation also produced the ghouls, decrepit, ragged, almost rotting, zombie-like victims of massive radiation poisoning.

Junktown is one of the smaller towns in South California. As the name suggests, it was built after the Great War out of random pieces of junk. The town was founded soon after the War by a soldier called Darkwater. The town mostly lives out of trading and has a reputation of open hospitality. Around 2161, the mayor of Junktown was Killian Darkwater, grandson of the town's founder, who also ran a general store, Darkwaters. Another big player in the town was Gizmo, a small-time crook and casino owner. While Gizmo's casino brought a lot of tourists and money into the town, problems also came with it. Other important places in Junktown at that time included the Crash House, home to the Skulz and the Skum Pitt, a bar owned by Neal. Doc Morbid was the town's doctor. Tycho, a Wasteland Ranger, also resided in Junktown for a while at that time.

Super mutants are mutated humans, products of a Forced Evolutionary Virus infection. They have (mostly) green skin, are immune to disease and radiation, and are blessed with exceptional strength and endurance. They also possess exceptionally long lives as well as total sterility. Super mutants were created by Richard Grey, who, after falling into an FEV vat and being horribly mutated, called himself The Master. In his warped state, he decided that he would have to force humanity to evolve. If everyone could be as perfect as his super mutants, there would be no more conflict. Those who could not evolve would die. The Master began seeking out uncontaminated humans from whom to create mutants and build his super mutant army.

Ghouls are victims of a massive radiation poisoning which has turned them into decrepit, ragged, almost rotting, zombie-like mutants. Most known ghouls were created from vault dwellers living in Vault 12 under the city of Bakersfield (better known as Necropolis after the Great War). As part of the vast Vault Experiment Program, the Vault 12 door was designed not to close properly. Thus, massive amounts of radiation attacked those within the Vault, most of whom were turned into the current ghoul population. Generally, in the Fallout universe, massive exposure to radiation might cause humans to transform into ghouls.

Fallout 2: A Post Nuclear Role Playing Game is the sequel to the original Fallout game. Released in 1998, it was officially developed by Black Isle Studios, which by that point had become a full-fledged design outfit. The game's overall theme matter was more R-rated, with drugs and prostitution becoming major elements of the setting and the drug Jet is one of major subplots. Profanities are also encountered more often. During the course of the game, players can join the Mafia, become a porn star, get married and subsequently divorced, and nearly every town in the game features some sort of prostitute that can be slept with. Slavery also becomes an important subplot, and players can either side with the Slavers or join their opponents (such as New California Rangers) who try to stamp slavery out. NPCs can be bought and sold as slaves during the course of the game.

The Brotherhood of Steel (BOS) is a techno-religious organization, with roots in the US military and government-sponsored scientific community from before the war. The BOS is mostly composed of the descendants of those military officers, soldiers, and scientists. While they are a relatively small organization, they make up for this with their frightening arsenal of pre-war and post-war technology: They have laser weapons, power armors, surgical enhancements, combat implants, and a squad of Brotherhood Knights who have the ability to erase an entire town from a map without a scratch. Unlike the chivalrous knights of old, members of the Brotherhood are not interested in justice for the obviously weaker and less fortunate around them, but instead in keeping their secrecy and preserving and developing technology. Their motives are often unclear, and Brotherhood members are not people to be trifled with. It is safe to say, however, that if a group of Brotherhood knights appears to be helping some less fortunate people, their motives are not altruistic.
