The featured article re-evaluation project is a project that aims to overhaul our current rotation of featured articles, which are unfortunately outdated and do not include any articles from Fallout 4 or Fallout 76.

Scope[]

All current featured articles, as well as any articles nominated by project participants.

Guidelines[]

This project's first phase will be to reassess our current featured articles. While many of our featured articles are worthy of such a distinction, many others are not. This first phase will evaluate all 366 of our current featured articles; a project participant evaluating the page may make a recommendation of whether or not to keep its status as a featured article.

Featured articles should represent the wiki's indisputable best content; more specifically, featured articles should be in-depth, referenced thoroughly, formatted correctly, have zero speculation, and consist of fully accurate information.

While participants are welcome to improve currently sub-par featured articles, this project aims to replace many of our featured articles in order to display a fresh set of quality, newer content. If a page that is removed from the list of featured articles is later improved by another editor, it can be re-nominated during phase two.

Speaking of phase two, this part of the project will have users nominate new featured articles, which will be evaluated by other participants. Although not a requirement, this project hopes to add many featured articles from Fallout 4 and Fallout 76, so that our rotation will have a fairly equal balance of pages from all of the games.

Also open to discussion is how we present our featured articles - our current system is a 366-day rotation of featured articles that are tied to one day of the year (for example, Vault Boy will always be the featured article on April 20). Any changes to this system are welcome to be proposed so that they can be considered by other participants.

Finally, pages that are selected to be featured (or stay featured in phase one) should have something on the page itself that notes it is an example of the wiki's best content. How this distinction is presented can be discussed by project participants.

As an idea, should there be a minimum/maximum number of articles from a specific game that can be featured? The old list was very heavy on Fallout 1/2/3 and to a lesser extent New Vegas, and while it's good to feature articles from older games people new to the franchise might not have played, I'm a bit concerned we might over-correct and focus too much on a couple of the games at the cost of covering the wider franchise. And as a second idea, if we set a limit, a game with articles over that limit would be first in line to have some of its featured articles replaced by newer ones from, say, the TV show or any future games. Makes sense to me. With 366 days, perhaps the games could be split up like: 45 for each of the six main games (270/366), 75 for cross-game content (345/366), then 21 for everything else. LaymansReign (talk) 00:37, 3 April 2023 (UTC)

In Phase Two, participants may nominate new featured articles to replace ones removed from the list in Phase One. This project would like to encourage a (mostly) equal balance of content from each of the mainline games, so that there is broad representation in the list, especially when it comes to Fallout 4 and Fallout 76. Participants are also encouraged to improve articles that were removed from the list in Phase One, to be re-nominated, if they so desire.

To nominate a new article, use the following formatting:

Participants may propose an article of their choosing; they may also optionally choose a day to go along with their nomination, though this is not required. Use ~~~~ to sign and date your nomination. A peer will review the article in question and determine whether or not it should be featured. If approved, then it will be added to the list, on the selected day (if one was chosen). Either the nominator or the peer reviewer may make any necessary improvements to the article. However, if the peer reviewer determines that the article is too far from being featured quality, that it is too light on content to be featured, or any other reason, they may decline the nomination.

After a nomination is approved, it can be added to the new list. It should be followed by a re-writing of the Featured Article blurb to go on the main page by any project participant.

March 2024 check-in[]

On March 6, 2024, I (LaymansReign) decided to do a check-in on the slate of Featured Articles and their balance from game to game, to see if we needed to adjust the coverage at all, after almost 9 months of work on the project. The results are as follows:

  • 295/366 filled, 80.9%
  • 71/366 needing to be filled, 19.1%
  • Fallout: 24 (solely), 30 (with duals)
  • Fallout 2: 16 (solely), 23 (with duals)
  • Fallout 3: 31 (solely), 37 (with duals)

As far as I can tell, this means we need to distribute some from New Vegas and cross-game content into more lacking areas, like Fallout 1/2 and other games. We should also factor in the TV show when it premieres and some of those articles get improved. The distribution of FO3/FO4/FO76 is a pretty good baseline, though.
