| This page is about the feature including dogs and cats with constructible ally objects. For the separate gameplay mechanic that was present at release, see Creature taming. |
Pets, also known as CAMP pets, are a feature in Fallout 76, released with the Gleaming Depths update which brought in pet dogs and cats. Pets inhabit a player's CAMP in a manner similar to the allies feature, and their respective CAMP objects are built under the Dwellers (formerly known as Ally) section. Pets can be customized and interacted with in a number of ways, including giving them their own names.[1]
Interactions[]
There are three options to interact with a pet:
- Interact - This opens a wheel menu with three options: pet, speak and sit.
- Customize - Specific apparel items (crafted at an armor workbench) can be equipped by pets. The effects are aesthetic only.
- Edit Name - The pet can be named whatever the player wants. Other players do not see the pet's name when visiting a CAMP.
List of available pets[]
Most pets are 800 Atoms each or 1200 as part of a bundle. The black Bombay cat and white German shepherd could be unlocked in season 19.

Notes[]
The cardinal
- A player can have a pet and an ally at a CAMP at the same time, but they cannot have more than one of each.
- CAMP pets do not follow the player into the world, but do follow the player around the vicinity of their CAMP.
- Like allies, CAMP pets are not available in Shelters.
- There are a variety of other animals that can be placed at a CAMP, although they have little interactivity. These include birds (including a caged cardinal and a caged owl), fish (in an Atlantic City aquarium, as well as the TV aquarium object), a pet lizard, butterflies, and ants in a giant ant farm. A mole rat generator also exists.
Development[]
Creature taming has existed as a gameplay mechanic in Fallout 76 since its release, but a separate system for CAMP pets has a long development history.
In April 2020, shortly after the release of the Wastelanders update, then-project lead Jeff Gardiner stated in a Reddit AMA that the team was working on CAMP pets as a follow-up to the ally system.[3] In March 2021, the yearly roadmap for 2021 was released, teasing CAMP pets for release in the Winter 2021 update (then known as Tales from the Stars, later changed to Night of the Moth).[4] A few days later, then-design director Mark Tucker confirmed in another Reddit AMA that the team was still working on CAMP pets as a mechanic, and that they intended to start with various types of dogs, expand to cats, and then "go from there."[5] Several consumable items intended for pets (with the editor ID prefix "PETS_") were datamined around this time, including burger bits, forrage porridge, meat treats, seed feed, steak sticks and veggie vittles. However, CAMP pets were removed from the roadmap in September 2021.[6] A Reddit comment from a Bethesda community manager announced that CAMP pets had been delayed to 2022.[7] However, CAMP pets were not included on the 2022 roadmap, and no news was given on their status after that point.[8]
In July 2024, datamines of the Public Test Server found that a tutorial menu for a pets mechanic had been added to the game's files.[9] In September 2024, in a video segment at the Xbox Tokyo Game Show, director Jonathan Rush officially confirmed that pets would be coming to Fallout 76 at the end of 2024.[1] The feature was added to the Public Test Server on September 30, 2024.
More previews of the CAMP pets feature were shown during the Fallout Day Broadcast in October 2024. It confirmed that the tabby cat and German shepherd would be the first two pets to release, with more to come in the future, teasing creatures with and without fur.[10] CAMP pets were introduced as part of the Gleaming Depths update in December 2024.
Behind the scenes[]
- According to Jonathan Rush, systems and monetization designer Matthew Dondelinger was the primary designer on the CAMP pets feature.[11]
- In early versions of the Public Test Server, the petting interaction only worked in first-person. The third-person animation was updated in the PTS on November 1, 2024.[12]
