General information

Magazines grant the player character additional perks when read, or unlock certain benefits. Perk magazines replace skill books from earlier installments in the Fallout franchise, due to the merger of skills and perks. These perks can have multiple ranks, with the rank increasing each time the player character reads a copy of the magazine. The magazine may be sold, dropped or stored after being read, and the perk or benefit will be retained.

There are a total of 120 magazines to collect throughout the Commonwealth. Magazines can be stored on display at settlements if the player character builds a magazine rack and transfers them to that storage. Both types of rack can hold 20 issues, meaning 6 racks are required to display all 120 magazines. The You're S.P.E.C.I.A.L. book can't be placed on the magazine racks.

  • They have no relation to skill magazines in Fallout: New Vegas, which provided temporary benefits.
  • Under general stats the game will recognize 121 magazines found. This is due to the existence of two copies of Grognak the Barbarian Issue #5: Demon Slaves, Demon Sands.
  • In the Pip-Boy, under Stat → Perks, some magazine perks are listed with magazine number, making it easier to track them.
  • Easiest way to track all magazines (and bobbleheads) is to build magazine racks (and bobble head stands). You can do this at the settlement of your choice by accessing the workshop, selecting Furniture → Shelves. Both the large yellow and metal rotating rack can hold 20 magazines each. Once stored, they are viewable and can be transferred to and from multiple times.
  • Magazine covers can be viewed, and the individual magazines activated & read, while they are on display in either the rotating or rectangular racks. However, NPCs are quite likely to knock magazines out of the rotating racks; you can usually find them on the surrounding floor or ground, but that involves some risk of them being misplaced. By contrast, magazines are relatively more likely to stay put in the rectangular racks, although the NPCs may sometimes still disturb them. If you want to display your issues of a particular magazine type together and in numerical order (e.g., to keep up with which issues you still need to collect), you can transfer all of the issues that you have of any given magazine type from a magazine rack back into your own Inventory/Misc storage briefly, then re-store them in the rack by running from top to bottom in the list in your Pip-Boy; the magazines will display in that same order when the rack "re-loads" upon tabbing out of the Pip-Boy.
  • It is possible for the 'Robco fun' magazines to respawn, such as the one inside the museum of freedom, without the holotape. It is unknown if this is a bug or not.

  • Opening the transfer items menu with the magazine rack causes the fallen magazines to go back to their proper place.

PCIcon pc U.S. Covert Operations Manual issues 7 and 8 have their inventory and world graphics swapped, i.e. they will show up as one on the ground or in a magazine rack, but as the other when picked up or read. [verified]
