General information[]
Magazines grant the player character additional perks when read, or unlock certain benefits. Perk magazines replace skill books from earlier installments in the Fallout franchise, due to the merger of skills and perks. These perks can have multiple ranks, with the rank increasing each time the player character reads a copy of the magazine. The magazine may be sold, dropped, displayed or stored after being read, and the perk or benefit will be retained.
There are 121 magazines to collect throughout the Commonwealth, 5 additional with the Far Harbor add-on, another 5 additional with the Nuka-World add-on, and 4 additional magazines that can be added through Creation Club purchases; making it the total of 135 magazines in the game. Magazines can be stored on display at settlements if the player character builds a magazine rack (rotating or rectangular) and transfers them to that storage.

- They have no relation to skill magazines in Fallout: New Vegas, which provide temporary benefits.
- The game will recognize 121 magazines found under general stats. This is due to the existence of two copies of Grognak the Barbarian Issue #5: Demon Slaves, Demon Sands.
- In the Pip-Boy, under Stat → Perks, some magazine perks are listed with magazine number, making it easier to track them.
- You can keep track of collected magazines by building magazine racks to place them on. You can do this at the settlement of your choice by accessing the workshop, and selecting Furniture → Shelves. Both the large yellow and metal rotating rack can hold up to 20 magazines each. Once stored, they are displayed on the rack, and can be transferred to and from at any time.
- It is possible for certain magazines to respawn. This includes: the RobCo Fun issues inside the Concord Museum of Freedom and Nick Valentine's office (though both without the holotapes), Grognak The Barbarian #02 Cometh the Trickster behind Joe Spuckie's, and the LaCoiffe in the Charlestown Laundry. Additionally, the Grognak the Barbarian issue in Vault 75 can be obtained again (but apparently only obtained twice) by doing a quest in Vault 81 ("Short Stories"). Other magazines (particularly the Live & Love in the Diamond City schoolhouse) have been reported as respawning, but these four seem to be the only ones which regularly respawn. It is unknown if this is a bug or not.
- All magazines in the game may be freely taken by the player, even if everything else in the vicinity is considered stealing.
