The European Commonwealth was a political union of sovereign European states that existed before the Great War.
In 2052, Europe was heavily dependent on oil imports from the petroleum-rich states of the Middle East and responded with military action to rapidly rising oil prices that were damaging its economy, starting the terrible global conflicts that later historians simply lumped together as the Resource Wars.[Non-game 1] Limited nuclear exchanges in the Middle East rise global panic levels.[Non-game 1] Despite hopes of the United Nations resolving the conflict between the Middle Eastern nations and the European Commonwealth, the war persisted, with the United Nations disbanding by July.
- Fallout intro: "In the 21st century, war was still waged over the resources that could be acquired. Only this time, the spoils of war were also its weapons: Petroleum and Uranium. For these resources, China would invade Alaska, the US would annex Canada, and the European Commonwealth would dissolve into quarreling, bickering nation-states, bent on controlling the last remaining resources on Earth."
