The Emmett Mountain side tunnel is an unmarked location in the Savage Divide region of Appalachia in Fallout 76, introduced in the Ghoul Within update.
It is a section of the Emmett Mountain disposal site that is separate from the location's main interior. It has an irradiated tunnel area unlocked with the Emmett Mountain side tunnel key, acquired during the quest Leap of Faith.
Background[]
This area is a mining shaft connected to Emmett Mountain, although it is separate from the main operation.[1] Both the main shaft and this side tunnel are currently being plucked for resources by Marion Copeland and her team of scavengers, extracting valuable radioactive ore.[2][3] According to scavenger Madeline Keene, her boss, Marion, does not take kindly to other scavengers encroaching on their operation.[4] Those who are part of Madeline's crew are encouraged to keep to the main tunnel, with this side area requiring supervision.[5]
Layout[]
The shed containing the tunnel entrance is on top of a small hill in the southeastern part of the Emmett Mountain disposal site. The shed itself has some minor junk items in it. After activating the hatch to enter the side tunnel, the interior has an office directly across from the ladder, and a hallway leading to a decontamination area to the west. Some machinery is found to the left and right, as well as two hazmat suits. The decontamination arches can be passed through to remove radiation; after passing through them, it opens up to an area with two cabinets and ammo box to the left. To the right is a storage area with a security gate, inside are more hazmat suits, as well as damaged hazmat suits. Various containers, including several lockers, can be looted here, and chems may spawn on a white table inside the gated area.
Directly across from the contamination arches, the wall has been blasted open and green toxic waste plasters the surrounding area. Through the hole in the wall is a highly-irradiated area (+54 rads per second) where several radioactive barrels have been stored. During the quest Leap of Faith, this area is the stage for a feral ghoul attack, as they merge from another hole in the wall to the east, where a small cavern is found. However, after the quest's completion, the entire side tunnel is devoid of creatures.
To the west, the security gate has fallen, providing access to a hallway that leads to the mining operation. Another security gate here must be unlocked with the Emmett Mountain side tunnel key acquired during Leap of Faith. Kevan Asherton goes into this area during the quest, but it can be revisited after the quest. Although several uranium ores are visible along the sides of the mining tunnel, they cannot be taken. Heading north, the tunnel terminates at a wall, but there are left and right paths. Both options also terminate shortly, in collapsed, rocky sections filled with toxic water, featuring more unlootable uranium ores and radioactive barrels. A skeleton lies against some barrels near the north wall.

(Marion Copeland's dialogue) - ↑ Vault 76 dweller: "I'm not on the team, but I am here for irradiated ore."
Madeline Keene: "I see. Well... I don't want any trouble. I'm just a grunt. Came in to grab some tools. I'll just say that Marion hasn't been kind to other scavengers digging around on her turf. Not without joining her crew first, anyway."
(Madeline Keene's dialogue) - ↑ Vault 76 dweller: "[Lie] Yeah, just started today."
Madeline Keene: "Welcome aboard! I'm Madeline. But, uh, you should probably get back to the main operation. Nobody's supposed to be back here without supervision. I just came to grab some tools."
