Detailed walkthrough[]

After reaching an affinity value of 250 with Curie, she will ask to speak with the player character, wherein she states that her robotic nature and its lack of "human inspiration" prevents her from progressing any further in her research. She wants the "expanded hardware" of a human brain and requests they find a way to fulfill her request.

The quest will pause if and until the main quest Dangerous Minds has been completed, after which one can suggest asking Doctor Amari, a memory specialist and co-owner of the Memory Den in Goodneighbor.

Going to the Den and talking to Amari, she declines the use of a human body but instead decides to use a synth body. She states that her line of work, and backdoor affiliation with the Railroad has allowed her to perform risky memory-wiping procedures on willing synths desperate to escape the Institute; sometimes the procedure fails, resulting in the synth being trapped in a persistent vegetative state. One such synth can be used to transfer Curie's personality and memories, but only if the synth's caretaker agrees. Curie will choose to remain in the Memory Den waiting for Amari to make contact with them.

After a duration of 24 hours, going to the basement of the Memory Den, one will find either Glory or an unnamed caretaker with the vegetative synth, designated G5-19. Glory will have reservations about giving up G5-19 for the procedure, but passing a Charisma check will convince her to allow it; the Caretaker will not require any checks and will agree right away.

Following the completion of the procedure, Curie's mind will be transferred into the generation 3 synth body, where she experiences new and confusing human feelings, leaving her old Miss Nanny body empty and deactivated. Talking to Curie afterward will have her comment that she is excited for the next step in her life, but also fearful of the new risks like bodily injury that she didn't have as a robot. Additionally, talking to Glory will have her either be sad but content with G5-19's predicament or angry about misusing her depending on whether or not she was convinced to permit the use of G5-19; if the Caretaker is present rather than Glory, she does not need to be talked to. The quest then completes.

StageStatusDescriptionLog Entry
100 Find someone to help CurieCurie wants to become human, or as close to it as she can better pursue her studies. We need to find an expert: a brain surgeon, an AI programmer, or similar.
150 Bring Curie to Doctor AmariIf Curie seriously wants to become human the logical person to help is Doctor Amari. With her expertise with the memory pods and Synths, perhaps Curie could get her wish.
200 Wait for Doctor AmariDoctor Amari's memory operations don't always go well. There's a brain dead Synth that may be a good host for Curie. Doctor Amari needs time to contact the Synth's caretaker.
300 Talk to the caretakerG5-19's caretaker has arrived. I need to convince her that she should donate G5's body to Curie.
400 Watch the download procedureWith consent granted, Doctor Amari is ready to download Curie into G5-19. Hopefully the procedure will work successfully.
500 Talk to CurieThe operation appears successful. I should talk with Curie to make sure it's really her and she's healthy.
600Quest finishedQuest completeIncredibly, Curie has been downloaded into a Synth body. This is obviously going to be a major adjustment for her. She'll need me more than ever.
9000Quest failedQuest failed

Notes[]

  • If the player has not completed Road to Freedom, Glory was killed (either independently or as a result of completing End of the Line or Tactical Thinking), or the player has been kicked out of the Railroad (turning Glory hostile), she will be replaced by the unnamed Caretaker.
    • If the quest is completed before Road to Freedom and the player character talks to Glory after completing that quest, she may still talk about regretting giving up G5-19 for the procedure as if she was there, even though she was not.
  • When Curie enters her new body, the items in her old inventory are not transferred to her new one. (Her old body has 865d1 as the reference ID.)
  • Even before the transferring procedure begins, G5-19's body inside the lounger will already be identified as Curie in V.A.T.S.
    • G5-19 can also be spoken to and will also make comments if one picks up items in the room like the Rad-X and RadAway on the nearby table with Curie's voice.
  • Automatron (add-on) If she has been modified at the robot workbench, Curie's body will revert to its default state during the transfer.
    • All mods equipped on Curie's robot body will be lost.
  • Vault-Tec Workshop If Curie is highlighted through Overseer's Most Wanted, the quest marker will update automatically to Curie's new body upon returning to the Memory Den to begin the procedure, even while her old robot body is still active.
  • It will not be possible to dismiss Curie after starting her quest.[verification needed]

Behind the scenes[]

The quest title "Emergent Behavior" is a reference to the philosophical stance of emergentism which focuses on the belief that consciousness can be an unexpected 'side-effect' of, or that it 'emerges from,' complex interactions in a system, like a brain or a similar computational system. As Curie behaves like a conscious entity, she would qualify for consciousness under the philosophical doctrine of behaviorism.

Bugs[]

  • Playstation 4Playstation 4 Xbox OneXbox One If Doctor Amari is killed in any way, the objective may stay on "Bring Curie to Doctor Amari" and will not fail, making it impossible to complete the quest. This effectively eliminates the chances to get not only synth Curie, but her companion affinity perk as well.[verified]
  • PCPC Playstation 4Playstation 4 Sometimes upon successfully transferring her to her new body, Curie will have a glitched smoking animation while idle with no weapon equipped. No workaround has been identified yet.[verified]
    • This may be fixed by reloading an old save and traveling to the Railroad. Glory will then be the caretaker of Curie's synth, and Curie will not be smoking.
    • PCPC This can be fixed through the use of console commands by selecting her and typing caf.
  • PCPC If the Miss Nanny version of Curie has been flagged as protected somehow, the script will fail to kill the Miss Nanny. If one speaks to it, it will speak lines from the stage of the quest where Curie waits with Doctor Amari.[verified]
  • PCPC Playstation 4Playstation 4 Sometimes, when the scene begins for Curie to be transferred to her new body, the old Curie (Miss Nanny) is not present, but the voice is heard. After completing the transferal, the old Curie body can be found upstairs in the main room of the Memory Den.[verified]
  • PCPC Playstation 4Playstation 4 Upon completion of the quest, one can get two instances of experience being awarded.[verified]
  • PCPC Playstation 4Playstation 4 Xbox OneXbox One Doctor Amari will go to the basement to wait for the caretaker. Sometimes the caretaker will already be there, though Amari won't acknowledge her existence unless the player first waits 24 hours. [verified]
  • PCPC Using the Robot Workbench from Automatron to alter Curie as a Miss Nanny can glitch her voice in her synth body.[verification needed]
