Dumar is an acrolyteIn-game spelling, punctuation and/or grammar of the Children of the Cathedral.

Background[]

Dumar politely directs the Vault Dweller to speak with Laura, as he is preoccupied with cleaning the pews.[1] He also declines to provide healing services and mentions that medical teachings, or "the healing arts," are not bestowed upon mere acrolytes.[Cut content 2] If the player has a high INT score and speaks verbosely, he confesses that he cannot understand them, and apologizes for his ignorance.[Cut content 3]

Appearances[]

Dumar was a character cut from Fallout.

Behind the scenes[]

  • Dumar appears to have been cut from Fallout at an early stage of development, as his dialogue file is thoroughly malformed. The similar cut NPC Zack Barstow has a properly formatted dialogue file, suggesting he was created after Dumar.
  • Dumar's script uses the term "acrolyte" in his description and dialogue.[Cut content 1][Cut content 2] It's unclear if this is a mistake or some sort of distortion of the original word. The word "acrolyte" does not appear in the published version of the game, outside of his cut dialogue file and the final version of SCRIPTS.LST, where a reference to Dumar lingers. Here he is once again described as an "Acrolyte of the Children."[2]
    • Between the demo version and release version of SCRIPTS.LST, "# local_vars=6" was added to Dumar's line.
    • In the published version of the game, generic initiates of the Cathedral are called acolytes.[3] Dane refers to congregants who have not yet undergone baptism as acolytes.[4]
  • In the initial release of Fallout 2, the warrior at the end of the Temple of Trials was named Dumar. In patch 1.02d, this character's name was changed to Cameron, in honor of Cameron Rapmund, the winner of a Fallout trivia contest.[Non-game 1]
