Doctor Duff is a resident of Diamond City in 2287. She along with Professor Scara both work and reside in the Science! Center.

Background

The open and easy-going Doctor Duff is the public face of the Science! Center, responsible for interacting with visitors and schoolchildren on field trips. She's a treasure trove of knowledge, particularly relating to biology, and doesn't shy away from sharing it with anyone willing to listen.[1] She is also very absent minded and impulsive - someone who would just start a project and have to apologize if it got in someone's way. That someone is usually her lover Professor Scara. The pair operate as the classic "odd couple."[2] While Duff has a multitude of experiments running simultaneously, Scara focuses on one at a time, even when Duff tries to get her to help her.[3] Duff has also has taken to cleaning up their home and laboratory, to the chagrin of Scara, who didn't want her laboratory space rearranged.[4]

References

  1. Duff: "Hi there! Are you here for today's free biology lesson?"
    The Sole Survivor: "Biology lesson?"
Duff: "That's right. Usually the kids from the schoolhouse are the first to drop by, but I don't see why I can't start the lesson with you."
The Sole Survivor: "Sure. Sounds fun."
Duff: "Yes! Love that enthusiasm. Now we all talk about radiation like it's a single thing, but it's actually a term referring to dozens of different ionizing rays. You have X-Rays, Beta Rays, Gamma Rays... But which one are we most worried about? The one most associated with the big, old bombs 200 years ago?"
    The Sole Survivor: "Gamma rays?"
Duff: "That's right! Now. Gamma rays are bad. Really bad. If your body absorbs too much of that kind of radiation, you'll suffer from fatigue, anemia, even death. But some life forms have been living with Gamma radiation exposure for two centuries now, and they've adapted. Neat, huh?"

  2. Duff: "Professor! I have a new theory how the Institute makes the synths."
Scara: "Oh no. We banned talking about this, remember? After last time? The shouting? Me sleeping on the cold floor of the lab for three nights?"
    Duff: "That was your choice..."
Scara: "And seriously... growing synths from the ground using recombinant plant nuclei? I mean, how could they even..."
Duff: "Ah ha! You do want to talk about it!"
Scara: "Uh... Oh look! We have a visitor! Doctor Duff, dear, if you could bother them while I walk away from this conversation..."
    (Duff's and Scara's dialogue)
  3. Duff: "You sure you won't help in my next experiment, Professor?"
Scara: "Which one? You always do too many at once. How am I expected to keep track of all of them?"
Duff: "I like to organize them by colors! If the compounds are mostly green, it's a green experiment. Mostly blue? Blue experiment."
Scara: "Dare I ask which color of experiment you want help on?"
    Duff: "Magenta."
    (Duff's and Scara's dialogue)
  4. Scara: "Duff, if I've told you once, I've told you a thousand times... stop rearranging my work space. You're driving me crazy."
Duff: "Aww. I was trying to surprise you by cleaning it up. I thought you'd be happy."
Scara: "Sigh... I'm not mad at you, just frustrated. It might look like a mess, but I have a specific way of organizing everything that I own."
Duff: "Oh. Then I'm guessing you won't be happy with how I rearranged our bedroom. Sorry, Professor!"
