Dogmeat is a possible companion of the Lone Wanderer in 2277.

Background

His name is a homage to the Dogmeat from Fallout, and according to the developers, he is a descendant of the Vault Dweller's original canine companion that died in a horrible accident involving a force field. His master, a scavenger, was killed while in combat with raiders in the Scrapyard.

Effects of player actions

  • Dogmeat is found in the Scrapyard (south of Minefield), fighting several raiders. Regardless of any other companion in your party or your Karma level, you can recruit Dogmeat to reach the maximum number of companions at once. Shooting Dogmeat in the initial encounter without talking to him will make it impossible for the player to recruit him.

Other interactions

Notes

  • If enemies are nearby, Dogmeat will growl. Since she's coded to be a higher priority target than the player's character, Dogmeat will draw attackers' attention away from the player character.
  • In Dogmeat's dialogue, there are "Scold" and "Praise" options. These however, do nothing at all and appear to be there purely for flavor.
  • Her right eye is brown, while her left eye is blue. This is known as heterochromia.
  • Her breed is an Australian cattle dog, specifically a Blue Heeler.[verification overdue]
  • If you tell Dogmeat to wait in Megaton, and then blow the town up, Dogmeat will be alive outside of the Megaton ruins.
  • When instructed to find something, Dogmeat is capable of bypassing locked containers and doors.
  • You will lose karma if you kill Dogmeat.

Appearances

Dogmeat appears in Fallout 3.

Behind the scenes

  • Before the release of Fallout 3, the process of how to recruit Dogmeat had only been shown as a small clip as the player holds something out to the wounded dog. The item is not revealed. Dogmeat was said to be found in a random encounter, which would appear in different places depending on where the player ventures to, but was meant to appear early on to help develop your bond with the dog. This was scrapped in the released game.
  • In the 1976 post-apocalyptic movie A Boy and His Dog, the main character calls the dog (named "Blood") "Dog Meat" once, at the start of the film.
  • Dogmeat is modeled after the dog in Mad Max 2 (aka The Road Warrior). The main character Max, played by Mel Gibson, had a dog that wandered with him. Dogmeat is the same breed as Max's dog, an Australian cattle dog.
  • There is a viral hoax that Dogmeat can use the wazer wifle. See wazer wifle hoax.

Bugs

  • Xbox 360Xbox 360 In Little Lamplight, if Dogmeat is following you, and you go into the testing chamber to explore, Dogmeat may appear dead while exiting. Then while leaving a room or house, Dogmeat's dead body will spawn outside next to where you entered. This bug does not mention to you that Dogmeat has been killed resulting in Dogmeat's body still taking up a companion slot.
  • Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 Upon asking Dogmeat to look for a weapon, he will run up to you and initiate conversation instead, possibly because there is no weapon around or he may just run around in circles.
  • Xbox 360Xbox 360 During the Blood Ties quest Dogmeat may disappear from the game after talking with Vance about making a deal with Arefu, loading a previous save doesn't fix the problem.
  • Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 The game might crash if you try to talk to Dogmeat while the battle is still ongoing in the Scrapyard.
  • Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 Through use of the Paralyzing Palm perk (or any weapon with a knockdown affect), Dogmeat can store items whose weight total exceeds 10,000 lbs. However, asking him to fetch you an item at any time after he recovers will return all stored items.
  • Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 Despite being told to 'stay' in a specific location or to 'wait at Vault 101', Dogmeat will randomly show up soon after or never to be seen again. This has even been observed in Vault 87 and inside Raven Rock.
  • Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 Despite being sent back to Vault 101, Dogmeat has shown up inside of the West residence in Arefu. After going outside, Dogmeat does not follow.
  • PCPC When entering a room with a single door while travelling with Dogmeat and another companion, it is sometimes possible for the companion to stop in a doorway while Dogmeat tries to get past him into the room. This makes it impossible to push the companion out of the way, trapping you in the room. The only solution to this is to reload, on pc it is possible to use the tcl command in the console to turn clipping off.
