Dog tags is a common term referring to military identification tags. They appear in various forms in Fallout, Fallout 2, and Fallout: New Vegas.

Background[]

Military identification tags or "dog tags" are a form of identification issued to military personnel. Each tag contains a copy of essential information, such as name, blood type, identification number, and other data. The tags are meant to provide an easy method of identifying casualties. They are designed so that one of the tags can be left with the soldier, while the other is collected for administrative use. These tags were used by the United States Armed Forces and are used by the New California Republic Army,[1] their usage was congruent with the Holotag.[Non-game 1]

Holotags are small and durable tags used to identify their wearer in case of their death. They are not intrinsically valuable, but are used to track casualties by their issuer. They can also act as a data recorder for a suit of power armor, providing the issuer a record of the deeds of their fallen wearer.[2][3][4] In some cases, information such as the soldier's full name, signature, identification number, blood type, security clearance, expiration date, base of operations, and a slogan You think you can take me? You go right ahead are displayed below a barcode. Other tags contain name and address only.[5]

Though not especially valuable by themselves, the Brotherhood often pays a reward to any who bring in holotags they find."

Elizabeth Jameson: "Exactly. A Brother fallen in the field may have no one to carry word of his death back to me. In calmer times, we could send detachments and messengers to learn their fates, but with our manpower stretched thin, we have no such luxury. Which is why I must now ask you for your help. Each Brother wears a Holotag like the one you found. Should you find any of the fallen Brethren in the field, I ask that you return their tags to me, so that I might record their deeds in the scrolls."
