The Director is a robot continuing in its namesake role of directing the other robots acting as service staff at the pre-War General Atomics Galleria in the Commonwealth 2287. It appears in Fallout 4.
Background[]
Acting as the epicenter of the Director Management System, the Director, housed in a Mister Gutsy chassis, and the Galleria it governs were intended by its creators General Atomics International to serve as a test case for the capability of a single robotic unit to act as an operational nexus on its own and maintain any facility in a self-sufficient manner.[1][Non-game 1] Although theoretically the system was supposed to minimize the maintenance overhead, the Director remained a single point of failure that brought the entire system to a standstill if damaged in any way. While GAI was still working out the issues, RobCo Industries released a competitive mainframe control system of their own, the Star Control Mainframe that was ready for the market and ultimately chosen as the superior option by the Nuka-Cola Corporation for use at the Galactic Zone in their Nuka-World amusement park.[2]
Despite this, General Atomics continued trying to refine the DMS. However, the setbacks seemingly continued to pile on; in July 2077, the existing system demonstrated critical flaws in the DMS, in which the legally mandated supervisor present at the galleria had to intervene numerous times to prevent malfunctioning robots from attacking patrons early in the months, though the incidents were dismissed by GAI as caused by the intervention. The supervisor was personally blamed for the behavioral cascade of failures, and ordered to refrain from contact with robots or patrons, a choice that ended up being a grave error.[3]
Around July 19th, DMS-controlled robots attacked and killed several patrons, with GAI offering financial compensation to survivors. Unwilling to admit any wrongdoing on their part, the corporation ordered the supervisor to assist the Director in identifying malfunctioning robots and overseeing their repairs. The executives assumed that further fatalities could occur, but rather than scrap the system, the supervisor was instructed to offer bribes (called "immediate financial settlements") to survivors on behalf of GAI. The corporation did, in fact, have an entirely separate compensation scale for such purposes, designated 14-J.[4]
Things came to a head on July 26th, when the failure to resolve the underlying systems caused enough deaths to force the board to close down the galleria indefinitely.[Non-game 1] The supervisor was instructed to notify the Director and oversee the immediate shutdown of the galleria. However, the master robot promptly killed them when they shut the galleria down, seeing them as a direct threat to its immediate functions.[5]
The galleria remained in stasis for the next three months as GAI devised firmware updates to resolve the underlying cascade failures. The grand reopening protocol, as it was called, was transmitted to the robots remotely, and was supposed to be activated on October 23, 2077 by a man named Mr. Kincaid, designated Grand Reopening Supervisor 18-Alpha, but the breakout of the Great War interrupted these plans.[6] For the next 200 years, the Galleria was preserved in its dormant state, with the robots continued to maintain it as best they could, but the lack of resupply and the pass of time took their toll. However, the DMS itself remained active,[Non-game 2] becoming an object of interest to robotics researchers in the region for years.[7]
Interactions with the player character[]
Interactions overview[]
| Interactions | ||

| This character is involved in quests. | ||
Quests[]
- Galleria: The Sole Survivor can restore function to the robot merchants of the Galleria by passing a red Charisma check/using the General Atomics ID card to convince the Director to reboot. Alternatively, they can do it themselves by destroying the Director and using a terminal in its control tower.
Effects of player's actions[]
- Convincing the Director to open the galleria will change the behavior of several of the robots, including making Crisp, Sprocket, and Danny available as merchants.
- Choosing the dialogue option to deny being the supervisor immediately turns the Director and all Galleria robots hostile.

- ↑ Professor Scara: "Excuse me, but this is a private research site. If you're here to study these robots, I'll have to insist you relocate to somewhere else."
The Sole Survivor: "Who's private research site?"
Professor Scara: "Well... mine, of course. The General Atomics Galleria is a rare and unique opportunity to study the robot manufacturer's patented Director software system. A single master robot controlling a staff of servitor robots which in turn maintain a facility in a self-sufficient manner is... well, remarkable! Bah... I've already told you too much. Like I said, if you want to study the system yourself, you're going to have to do it somewhere else."

"This is where the director is stationed. Use the lift to enter and exit, and hack the terminal (Master) if you wish.
- If you thoroughly explored [18.02] General Atomics Factory in South Boston, you may actually have a General Atomics ID. Present it, and all will be well.
- If you kill the Director, you can use his terminal to choose from several options that will disable or destroy the robots, or trigger the Grand Reopening. Can’t hack the (Master) terminal? There’s a password on the supervisor’s terminal in Back Alley Bowling."
