Faceless and formidable, certainly. But kind. A true expression of Atom's concern for us all.— Devin

Brother Devin is a fasting devotee of the Church of the Children of Atom at the Nucleus in 2287.

Background[]

Once a wastelander, Devin was a Jet addict, to the point where his addiction caused his family had to shun him. His father would say that he had no son, as Jet killed him. With no family or home, he wandered the woods getting high on Jet when he came upon the Nucleus after weeks of travel. It was there that he acquired the quest to go to Atom's Spring and drink from its waters. There he had a vision:[1] A messenger from Atom strode from the sky before him in the form of a verdant stag wreathed in glowing radiation. It commanded him to return to the Nucleus, to leave behind his iniquities and give himself fully to Atom. For his dedication, Atom would send another messenger, who would free him from his dependency on Jet once and for all.[2][3]

This vision was seen favorably by the Children, seeing him as special and that Atom had chosen him. Determined to make his god and new family proud, he embarked on a long fast.[1] This fast of only irradiated water, however, is detrimental in that Devin was born without a resistance to radiation, and with him avoiding anti-radiation medication to obtain a revelation,[2] his friend, Zealot Ware, has become concerned for him. They previously bonded over how they both needed a hand, which their new family provided.[4] Devin's prolonged fast will cause him to inevitably perish, which is a source of much frustration for Ware.[5]

Now that Devin looks like a ghoul with hair, Ware's concern has him seeking the help of the Sole Survivor. As both a new convert and the one who saw the Mother of the Fog,[6] Ware seeks the Sole Survivor's help in getting Devin to end his fast. The others in the cult see Devin's devotion as admirable rather than detrimental,[7] even at the cost of committing blasphemy, which is something he must avoid because of the current political climate within the Nucleus.[8]

Ware has tried to convince Devin to end his fast to save his life, but Devin will have none of it.[9] This is because since the day of his vision, he has not taken a single hit of Jet, knowing that a return to his old ways is just as suicidal as if he starved to death.[10]

If the Sole Survivor cannot convince Devin to give up the fast, and that he has freed himself from his addictions,[11] Ware creates a plan for the Sole Survivor to impersonate either Atom or a messenger of his.[12] If the Sole Survivor goes through with Ware's plan and irradiates themselves without wearing a mask Devin will recognize the Sole Survivor and assure them that he will keep their identity as a messenger for Atom a secret. Whether the Sole Survivor does wear a mask or not he will tell others in his family about his vision.[10] If the Island has peace following the Children of Atom's Reformation, Devin will believe that the depths of Atom's compassion never cease to amaze,[13] however, if the Children are successful in shutting the power off to the fog condensers and subsequently Far Harbor is engulfed by the Fog, he sees their punishment as the cost of refusing Atom.[14]

  2. 2.0 2.1 Devin: "Holy Atom. From this spot I-- I-is that you? Oh holy... ... oh. I-I'm sorry, brother/sister. I thought you were... never mind. Did you need something?"
The Sole Survivor: "You seem like you're expecting someone?"
Devin: "I am. Atom came to me. And I will follow His command."
The Sole Survivor: "And what exactly did Atom command?"
Devin: "That I need only wait for my saving grace. Jet has been my crutch for many years. One day, I was in the woods, polluting myself, when a figure strode from the sky before me. A verdant stag, wreathed in holy Glow. It commanded me to return to the Nucleus, to leave behind my iniquities and give myself fully to Atom. For my dedication, Atom would send another messenger, who would free me from my shackles once and for all. That, brother/sister, is why I must wait."
    (Brother Devin's dialogue)
  3. Devin: "Please, just leave me a... th-that Glow? Who, who are you?"
The Sole Survivor: "What, Brother Devin? Do you not recognize me?"
Devin: "I-I'm sorry, Radiant One. You're, you're Atom's messenger, aren't you? You finally came. I've done as Atom commanded. Waited diligently for you to finally release me from my bondage. Please. Grant me Atom's strength and set me free?"
    (Brother Devin's dialogue)
  4. The Sole Survivor: "Why do you care so much about Devin?"
Ware: "I mean, he's a good kid. Sure, he liked his Jet a little too much, but it's not like he was out raiding. He just needed a hand. And lucky for us both, you showed up. Heh... kinda makes you wonder if Atom didn't have a part in this after all? So, was there something else?"
    (Zealot Ware's dialogue)
  5. The Sole Survivor: "I think so. Is he the one with the propellers and the periscope? I mean he's kinda hard to miss."
Ware: "No, he'd be the skeletal one with all his hair falling out. See, Brother Devin, he's been on a fast. A long one. No food. Only irradiated water. Waiting for a sign from Atom. Most folks would say that's real admirable, giving yourself to Atom like that. What do you think?"
    (Zealot Ware's dialogue)
  6. Ware: "Yeah? I mean, glory to At... wait. You're the new convert. You happen to see Brother Devin? Sickly guy praying off by himself?"
    (Zealot Ware's dialogue)
  7. Ware: "Thank you for being willing to talk to him. No one else in this place seems to give a damn."
    (Zealot Ware's dialogue)
  8. The Sole Survivor: "Why? What do you think?"
Ware: "I've got my opinions. Right now I'm interested in yours. What do you think about this fast?"
    (Zealot Ware's dialogue)
  9. The Sole Survivor: "Brother Devin's actions are very admirable. Truly proving his devotion."
Ware: "I mean, no one's saying the kid's not tough, sure, but... Look, me and Devin, we weren't born with Atom's blessing like everyone else around here. Rads, they hurt us. Now Devin thinks fasting and refusing meds till he dies is going to get Atom to grant him some kind of revelation or something. I've tried talking to him, but he won't listen to me any more and everyone else in this place thinks what he's doing is a brilliant idea. I-I know we don't know each other, but if you could convince him to quit, I'd owe you. Could give you some anti-rad meds I've cooked up. Recipe, too. Damn handy for folks like us."
    (Zealot Ware's dialogue)
  10. 10.0 10.1 The Sole Survivor: "How do you know your vision of Atom's messenger wasn't just a hallucination brought on by the drugs?"
Devin: "What if it was? Holy Atom spoke to me. Promised to free me from my weakness. He gave me a task. And I will obey."
The Sole Survivor: "When was the last time you used drugs?"
Devin: "The day of my vision. Haven't moved from this spot since."
The Sole Survivor: "So if you haven't used drugs since then, what makes you think you haven't already kicked the habit yourself?"
Devin: "Be-because I am weak. But Atom, Atom is strong. When his messenger appears, I will finally know that I have done what I must to be free."
The Sole Survivor: "Sitting here endlessly, it's suicide."
Devin: "You may be right. But stopping now, going back to my old ways. That too would be suicide. Here, I have a chance."
    (Brother Devin's dialogue)
  11. The Sole Survivor: "Foolish child! You have freed yourself! With your own strength! Now go! Do not squander it for another minute!"
Devin: "Freed... myself? You're, you're right. Oh thank you! Thank you messenger! Glory to Atom, I'm free!"
    (Brother Devin's dialogue)
  12. Ware: "W-wow. You really look the part. Atom's messenger. I think it's time you spoke with Devin."
"The hood, the rags and the rads. That should be everything you need to convince Devin."
"Well, you sure nailed the Glow. Feel like I need to shield my eyes."
"Goodness, that hood is creepy. But it certainly does the job."
"Those are some sorry rags you've got on. They're perfect."
    (Zealot Ware's dialogue)
  13. Devin: "An island at peace... the depths of Atom's compassion never cease to amaze."
(Brother Devin's dialogue) Note: This line is spoken the crusade against Far Harbor is called off at the conclusion of the quest Reformation.
  14. Devin: "They're finally gone. The cost of refusing Atom's grace, I suppose."
(Brother Devin's dialogue) Note: This line is spoken if the Fog engulfs Far Harbor at the conclusion of the quest Cleansing the Land.
