I'm Paladin Danse. Brotherhood of Steel.

M7-97, also known as Paladin Danse is a Brotherhood of Steel soldier living in The Commonwealth in 2287. He is a possible companion in Fallout 4.

Background

Paladin Danse is a member of the Brotherhood of Steel, an experienced tactician, and a powerful warrior. Danse also lets outsiders join the Brotherhood, if they prove themselves worthy through trials. He grew up in the Capital Wasteland alone, picking and selling scraps. When he was older, he moved to Rivet City and opened a junk stand.

There he met a man named Cutler and they became friends. He and Cutler were then recruited by the Brotherhood of Steel during one of their recruiting runs as both men felt like it was "the best way out of our nowhere lives". About a year after being posted to the Prydwen, Cutler disappeared on a scouting operation. Danse persuaded his CO to assemble a squad and let him search for Cutler.

After about three weeks, Cutler's team was tracked down to a super mutant hive. The super mutants had killed all of Cutler's team save for Cutler himself. They then proceeded to use the Forced Evolutionary Virus to turn Cutler into a super mutant, who was then killed by Danse.

Other interactions

Danse has the power and authority to grant the Sole Survivor membership into the Brotherhood of Steel.

Quests

  • Call to Arms: The Sole Survivor has to go to some ruins, with Paladin Danse. Trouble is, the ruins are populated by synth.
  • Semper Invicta: The Sole Survivor has to help Scribe Haylen and Knight Rhys.
  • Shadow of Steel: The Sole Survivor and Paladin Danse board the The Prydwen.
  • The Lost Patrol: The Sole Survivor is asked to find what happened to the last Brotherhood recon team.
  • Blind Betrayal: Danse is revealed to be an Institute Synth. Elder Maxson orders the Sole Survivor to find and execute him. The Sole Survivor is given the choice to either execute him or keep him alive and in exile.
  • Airship Down: If Blind Betrayal has not been completed, and Paladin Danse is still alive, he will make the last stand with the Brotherhood of Steel. He is killed by the player character, the synths or by the crashing airship.

Effects of player's actions

Maxed approval with Danse grants the Know Your Enemy perk, which grants +20% more damage against ghouls, super mutants and synths. It is impossible to max out the relationship with Danse before completing Blind Betrayal.

  • Being made an enemy of the Brotherhood makes him permanently hostile, removing him as a companion.
    • If Blind Betrayal has been completed, he will instead ignore the Sole Survivor and will only become hostile if hostile towards him. This still removes him as a companion, even if having romanced him, but will not remove his perk.

  • He likes it whenever the player character enters power armor.
  • He likes it whenever the player character boards a vertibird they have called in.
  • He likes it when the player character offers to help settlers for the Minutemen.
  • He likes it when the player character chooses the 'reasonable' dialogue options.
  • During Emogene Takes a Lover, he likes it when the player character threatens Brother Thomas (of the Pillars of the Community) with "One way or another, I'm going to see her", when asking about Emogene Cabot, after passing a hard Charisma check.
  • He loves it when the player character spares him during the quest Blind Betrayal.
  • He loves it when the Sole Survivor does anything negative towards super mutants, such as convincing Virgil he needs to die.
  • He loves when the Sole Survivor shows any kind of dedication to the Brotherhood of Steel in dialogue.
  • He loves it when weapons, armor, or power armor upgrades are crafted.
  • He loves it when convincing Paladin Brandis to return to the Brotherhood in The Lost Patrol.
  • He loves it when the Sole Survivor says they will kill (not eradicate) all the ghouls after confronting Clarke.
  • He loves it when asking for caps after completing Boston After Dark.

Notes

  • Paladin Danse will be available after the quest Tour of Duty.
  • Danse also appears to have a habit of exclaiming "Outstanding" when in approval of the Sole Survivor's actions, or when things are going to plan.
  • If an assault is made onto the Airfield under claim of the Brotherhood of Steel, Paladin Danse and his team will be dropped in by vertibird during combat as part of reinforcement.
  • It is impossible to max out relationship with Danse before completing Blind Betrayal.
  • If the Sole Survivor spares Danse during Blind Betrayal and use him as a companion, he will occasionally use voice lines that imply that he is still in the Brotherhood of Steel despite being exiled.
  • If the Sole Survivor spares Danse and keeps him as a companion, Brotherhood soldiers throughout the Commonwealth will attack them as long as he is their companion.
  • If the Sole Survivor spares Danse and becomes enemies with the Brotherhood, Danse will no longer respond to the player and can no longer be recruited as a companion.
  • The Sole Survivor can kill any Brotherhood members whilst Danse is following (including those on the Prydwen and at the Airport so long as they aren't named) without losing reputation with them.
  • If spared and convinced to stay during the quest Blind Betrayal, he will don a suit of X-01 power armor.
  • If taken to Nate/Nora's corpse in Vault 111, he will say "Take as long as you need, soldier."

Danse appears only in Fallout 4.

Bugs

  • PCPC When other power armor parts are equipped for Danse, they will count upon his carry weight, and lessen how much he is able to carry. Additionally if any of those power armor parts are unequipped, Danse won't get get back his old armor, but rather the power armor frame will be visible. It seems this has also in some way decreased his total carry weight drastically, to the point where he for some reason can only carry a bit over 10 pounds, even after emptying out his entire inventory. It is advised to let Danse keep his power armor on, as there doesn't yet seem to be a fix to this issue. (This is likely due to his own power armor pieces still being in his inventory, and taking up carrying capacity, albeit still being invisible, much like follower weapons).
    • One way to fix this is with console commands. Use the console command 0005de4d.showinventory to get the IDs of his power armor pieces, then use 0005de4d.equipitem "ID of armor piece" to get Danse to put his armor back on. After doing so, 0005de4d.showinventory should show that all of his power armor is now equipped.
  • When talking to Deacon for the first time commenting "the Institute is the enemy" will cause Danse to hate it.
