Sgt. Daniel Contreras is an NCR supply merchant in Camp McCarran in 2281.
Background[]
The head of the Camp McCarran supply shack, Contreras is about as shady as they come, without being found behind bars. Just how he managed to become the supply manager for the entire Camp McCarran is not entirely clear, but he has held that position for a while. The NCR military police is aching for an excuse to put him before a court martial, but so far he has been staying ahead of Lieutenant Carrie Boyd. Despite weekly inventory checks coming up short on guns and ammo, he holds on to his position, always pawning the goods away before the MPs come to search his possessions and quarters again.[1]
The MPs' suspicions are ultimately valid. Contreras uses his position as a supply sergeant to steal weapons and ammunition meant for Army use and resell them on the black market to mercenaries and the like.[2] To keep his hands clean and the MPs off his trail, he uses intermediaries to collect extra merchandise and communicate with his suppliers.[3] In return, people who do the legwork can buy items from his stash, many of which are restricted or outright absent from the open market.[4][5]
Beyond guns, Contreras also uses his connections to acquire chemical components that are ostensibly for medical use by the Army,[6] but can also be used to manufacture potent recreational drugs.[7][8] He usually passes it off as just selling "certain ingredients" on the side,[9] but the authorities have already taken note and are close to nailing him for chem trafficking. His Westside contact, Price, is already in custody and it is a matter of time until they get to the sergeant.[10][11]

Notes[]
- Contreras is one of the few named members of the NCR Army to not wear uniform of any kind.
- After killing Contreras, one can loot anything they may have sold him, as well as his caps.
- Any items or weapons sold to Contreras are added to his personal inventory instead of his items stock, meaning he will equip the best armor in his inventory, and the best weapon he has ammunition for.
- In addition to many other chems, Contreras is only one of two merchants in the Mojave Wasteland who sells ultrajet, alongside Jack in the Red Rock drug lab, if one teaches the former the recipe.
- If the player character succeeded in the Science check when getting the supplies from Blake, they can blackmail Contreras into giving an additional 100 caps on top of the regular reward for the quest.
- He usually sells large quantities of rare 12.7mm rounds, usually within the thousands at mid to high levels, and sells a similar amount of surplus 5mm round ammunition. He also sells large amounts of various .308 rounds.
- If Contreras is arrested he can still be traded with, he will just be moved to the jail within the camp. While in jail he can then be killed without repercussions.
- Contreras may not update his inventory or his cap amount before he is imprisoned.
- He has a Sunset Sarsaparilla star bottle cap that one can purchase from him for one or two caps.
- Following patch 1.3.0.452 Contreras is one of only two vendors who still sell .223 ammo boxes, the other being the 188 Trading Post arms merchant.
- If one kills Contreras and then turn him into Lt. Boyd, his body will appear in the jail cell.
- Contreras is not hostile towards the Courier if they fail the Don't Tread on the Bear! quest are subsequently branded a terrorist by the NCR.
- If one reaches unpredictable fame with the NCR, Contreras will not make the discounts on ammo or offer his deals until reputation improves, but this can be circumvented with NCR faction armor or clothing.
- When speaking to Contreras, after one asks him what he has for sale, and exit the sale box, the audio will play, but his facial expression will not change, the subtitles will not change, and no dialogue box will appear. Pressing the select button will allow one to exit the dialogue. This will happen every time he is spoken to.
Appearances[]
Daniel Contreras appears only in Fallout: New Vegas.

- ↑ The Courier: "Have you noticed anything suspicious lately?"
Carrie Boyd: "Now what kind of MP would I be if I didn't notice anything suspicious? I've had soldiers go AWOL, break-ins, thefts, you name it."
The Courier: "You said there have been thefts?"
Carrie Boyd: "Yeah. We keep coming up short on our weekly supply inventory checks. Guns and ammo, mostly. Not the kind of things you like to see go missing. No witnesses yet. I've got my money on Sergeant Contreras, who's supposed to be in charge of distribution, the little weasel. But he's too slick to let anyone catch him doing it. We've searched his possessions a dozen times. Nothing."
(Carrie Boyd's dialogue) - ↑ The Courier: "That's it? A few caps and another errand?"
Daniel Contreras: "You're right. I'm just an under-the-table arms dealer. What could I possibly offer you, a drifting mercenary? Sorry for wasting your time."
(Daniel Contreras' dialogue) - ↑ The Courier: "You said you have some legwork needing done?"
Daniel Contreras: "Well, I can't exactly go wandering off the base whenever I want, you know? They're already suspicious. I can hear the MP's now. "Gee, Contreras, I didn't know you had so many friends in the Gun Runners." Speaking of which, guess your first stop. You're just passing a little note to a man named Isaac for me. I want to know which girl he likes."
(Daniel Contreras' dialogue) - ↑ The Courier: "I can be pretty resourceful. Perhaps we could work out a deal?"
Daniel Contreras: "[SUCCEEDED] Now you're talking my language. I do have an expanded inventory for people I can trust. If you're willing to do a little legwork for me, I could give you access to my stash and at a discount. Many of these items aren't available in the NCR, and you'll be hard-pressed to find them at a better price anywhere else."
(Daniel Contreras' dialogue) - ↑ The Courier: "I have proof that Sgt. Contreras is involved in criminal activity."
Carrie Boyd: "That may be the worst-kept secret on the base. I'd be more surprised if you had proof he wasn't involved in criminal activity. But if you have proof, you're the envy of every MP stationed here. What'd you find?"
The Courier: "I hacked into his computer and found evidence that he's selling NCR guns."
Carrie Boyd: "Little bastard. I'm sure some of those find their way into the hands of our enemies, too. All right. Thanks for telling me. I'm going to have him rounded up. Pretty impressive work there. Wish I could keep you around. But for helping me nail this guy, I think you should have a little keepsake. Here. It's not contraband, but I confiscated it from Contreras last week because he was being smarmy and I was sick of his bullshit."
(Carrie Boyd's dialogue) - ↑ The Courier: "Contreras sent me for some medical supplies."
Blake: "Here you go. Let him know he needs to make another payment if he wants more of this stuff."
(Blake's dialogue) - ↑ The Courier: "Is there something special about these supplies?"
Blake: "Well, pain-killers are easy to come by, but it isn't easy finding iodine, allergy meds, and a few of these other items. Why do you ask?"
(Blake's dialogue) - ↑ The Courier: "Combining those with chemical cleaners would yield strong chems.../Some of those could be combined with other chemicals to make drugs..."
Blake: "Really? Huh, never thought of that. The Crimson Caravan isn't really in the drug business."
(Blake's dialogue) - ↑ The Courier: "Bullshit. If you're moving drugs, I'm going to have to report you."
Daniel Contreras: "Whoa there, kiddo. No need to blow things out of proportion. I'm just selling certain ingredients on the side, not chems. Besides, it's not like drugs are a big deal. Alcohol is just as bad yet it is perfectly legal in the NCR. I'm just a businessman doing business."
(Daniel Contreras' dialogue) - ↑ The Courier: "Close enough. Yeah, Contreras told me to give Price this package."
Keller: "Lets see here... Congratulations, you're under arrest for chem trafficking. Hand over your weapons and come with me."
(Keller's dialogue) - ↑ The Courier: "[INT/PER] Hey, that wasn't the right response for the password!"
Keller: "Price is in NCR custody and you're going to join him, unless you've got a damn good explanation for why you're looking for him. Hand over your weapons. You're under arrest."
(Keller's dialogue) - ↑ The Courier: "[50 caps] Maybe some caps will clarify things."
Daniel Contreras: "Now you're talking my language. I do have an expanded inventory for people I can trust. If you're willing to do a little legwork for me, I could give you access to my stash and at a discount. Many of these items aren't available in the NCR, and you'll be hard-pressed to find them at a better price anywhere else."
