The Contagions Vulnerability Robotic Infirmary Engineer (CVRIE),[2] typically shortened to Curie, is a robot residing within a secret wing of Vault 81 in the Commonwealth. By 2287, she is the sole working physician in the secret wing, trying to develop a universal cure long after her human colleagues have died. She appears in Fallout 4 as a possible companion of the Sole Survivor.

Background[]
The state-of-the-art CVRIE was designed to be the guardian of Vault 81, responsible for preserving the knowledge amassed by the Vault 81 scientists, as well as ensuring that every single one was aware of the significance of the mission undertaken within the halls of the vault.[3] However, the robot met in 2287 is not the same robot as when she was deployed to the Vault. Due to the overseer's sabotage, none of the science staff received a notification about the drill that would have allowed them to enter Vault 81 in time to survive the Great War.[4] Despite this, three researchers showed up: Kenneth Collins and Jim Flint reached the Vault from the Fens with the general population, while the overachiever M. Burrow was already on-site. They reported to the research area and were sealed inside.[5]
Despite their severely low numbers all but ensuring that the generations-long research plan would die out, the scientists still had state-of-the-art equipment, centuries' worth of supplies and the Contagions Vulnerability Robotic Infirmary Engineer (CVRIE), meaning that with even their limited manpower, they could still be a threat to the residential population.[3] To compensate, Collins upgraded and modified CVRIE, turning her from merely a customized Mister Handy unit into a fully-fledged lab assistant.[6] His upgrades provided her with a custom personality inspired by two female acquaintances of his, Liza and a French girl from Versailles he had met decades earlier in graduate school, while also loading the databanks with every great body of work he had (Kant, Einstein, Born, Darwin, Faraday, Turing, Braun, and her namesake, Curie) as well as knowledge of at least French and Japanese in addition to English,[1] to make her more lifelike and human. As such, CVRIE became informally known as Curie.[7] With her help, work picked up the pace and Phase I experimental trials soon began. When she was notified of this development, Overseer O. Olivette was mortified and attempted to play for time[8] while maintaining an aura of camaraderie, taking care to not reveal her intentions. While the mood among the three researchers remained stable thanks to Collins and Curie, Olivette knew they still had access to the nozzles and could release the pathogens for a Stage III trial, or worse. When a minor mishap with the mole rat population was resolved and Stage II was progressing rapidly, Olivette made her decision.[9]
Putting her plan into action, the overseer personally sabotaged the delivery nozzles inside every residential quarter and room on their side of the Vault. When the researchers began to notice (Burrow, specifically), she broke off all communications with them and kept hold of her terminal to prevent anyone else from contacting them.[10][11] Sealed in the research wing with no means of communication, the scientists grimly continued their work, despite knowing that they would likely never see the light of day again. Eventually, Curie became their inheritor,[12] watching as they fell one-by-one. Flint was the first to die,[13] possibly killed when one of the mole rat test subjects named Clyde escaped his cage and spread the pathogen he'd been injected with,[14] while Collins and finally Burrow both died of old age. At each of their passings, Curie interred them in makeshift coffins made of old lockers and continued the scientists' work on her own.[15]
Around 2204, Curie finally finished the broad spectrum cure allegedly capable of curing every pathogen the scientists had developed and analyzed in the captive mole rats, and placed an emergency call to notify Vault-Tec personnel to come collect the cure.[16] She produced multiple doses of the cure, but all but one dose have expired by 2287, and the organic compounds needed to reproduce the cure have also deteriorated over time, preventing further development.[17] Curie now awaits the arrival of a Vault-Tec representative to release her from her duties (her directives have some flexibility: even if the person says they are not a Vault-Tec employee, Curie can simply assume they are and use this to release herself). Having been isolated in Vault 81's laboratory for all of her existence, Curie is eager to explore the outside world and continue her scientific research.
Personality[]
Because she was programmed with the knowledge of the top scientific minds of their age, with some influence thrown in by her creator's personal attachments, Curie sees herself foremostly as a scientist and doctor, and is eager to benefit the cause of medicine by any means. She seems either unaware or uncaring to the sinister nature of the social experiment she was a part of in Vault 81, referring to the infected mole rats infesting the Vault with affection (she has given all of them names, such as Clyde).
Having been isolated within Vault 81 for decades with only three scientists for company and programmed with entirely pre-War knowledge, Curie is entirely naive to the true nature of the wasteland and its inhabitants. Because of this, she is desperate to leave the Vault in order to acquire new data and continue her mission of scientific research. While taken to the surface, she demonstrates an ability to see the beauty despite the devastation wrought by the bombs. However, her naivete does not fade, such as misunderstanding common wasteland practices including looting corpses.
Prolonged time spent in the wasteland with the Sole Survivor will lead to Curie expressing a human feeling of frustration at her limitations as a robot, deeming it necessary to advance in some way and become more human if she is to make a proper scientific breakthrough. Helping her accomplish her quest leads to her uploading her collective personality into the body of a synth (G5-19). However, she vastly underestimates the amount of changes she would have to get used to, amongst them the necessity to breathe, or the lack of a third hand. Despite these hurdles, Curie still deems the transformation worthwhile to advance her goals but must adjust for dealing with physical sensations like pain and the capacity to develop and express complex emotions, amongst them arousal towards those she cares about which leaves her very flustered.
Curie is unfailingly polite and kind to all those she comes across, even in the roughest of circumstances, and her pursuit of medicine is in part motivated by a sense of altruism that is relatively rare in the wasteland.
Interactions with the player character[]
Curie is first met when the player undertakes the quest Hole in the Wall in Vault 81 to investigate the hidden section of the Vault and search for a cure for Austin Engill, who was bitten by one of Curie's escaped mole rat subjects. She is waiting in the end in a closed room, and will ask the player if the Sole Survivor is a Vault-Tec employee. Even if the player stresses that they are not, she takes the opportunity to treat the encounter as authorization to leave the room, and the player can investigate, finding the backstory of Curie and Vault 81.
After finishing Hole in the Wall, Curie will ask to accompany the player out of Vault 81 in the wasteland, and will otherwise wait by the Vault door until the player chooses. After spending two centuries in Vault 81, she is eager to explore the wasteland and collect new data that could help her medical research. Periodically, she will generate stimpaks to give to the player when spoken to.
After having spent some time together, Curie will ask the player a personal request: she has determined that, as a robot, she cannot make any sort of scientific breakthrough without human creativity and must find a way to transfer her consciousness to a human body to advance her research. Though she is unaware of how such a feat could be accomplished, she asks the player to keep the idea in mind should the solution provide itself. As it turns out, Dr. Amari's work for the Railroad makes her the perfect candidate to transfer Curie's consciousness into a synth body. If Dr. Amari's assistance is asked for, she will take a few days to find a contact: someone whose synth friend accidentally had her mind erased during an identity reassignment, leaving her body in a vegetative state. The caretaker ultimately decides that using the synth body to house Curie's consciousness is preferable to the vegetative state they are in, and volunteers the body for the task. The procedure goes on without complications, though Curie is initially overwhelmed with human sensations, including the need to breathe. Still, despite the learning curve, she will be able to accompany the player character once again, trading her built-in Miss Nanny laser arm for a laser rifle.
After more time spent adventuring, Curie will explain many of the difficulties she has adjusting to her new body, though she remains optimistic that she can make further medicinal innovations. She ends up correct, as she makes a minor breakthrough using mutfruits to improve common stimpaks, thanking the player for their aid and confident that her research will continue to pay off.

Companion[]
- Curie becomes available as a companion by completing Hole in the Wall in Vault 81, regardless of whether the cure was given to Austin or kept by the player character.
- Due to a potential bug, it is advised to talk to Curie and get her as a companion before bringing the cure to Doctor Forsythe in the clinic.
- As a robotic companion, Curie shares all the advantages and disadvantages of one. While immune to radiation and poison, she can only use her built-in weapons (laser and buzzsaw by default; with Automatron installed, she can be modified at a robot workbench) and relies on innate DR for protection. If Emergent Behavior is completed, Curie then becomes a regular humanoid companion and can use better weapons and armor.
- If severely damaged when she is in her Miss Nanny form, Curie cannot be revived during combat by injecting stimpaks, because she is a robot. However, with Automatron installed, the player character can repair her with a robot repair kit. These do not require schematics and can be created at any chemistry station.
- Unlike all other companions, Curie has a fixed amount of health (440 as a Miss Nanny and 670 as a synth), regardless of the player character's current level. This is a higher amount of health than any other companion, who only gain parity with Curie in her Miss Nanny shell around a level of 49-50.
- As a synth, Curie's 670 health and ability to equip armor makes her by far the most durable companion, as the other companions will not catch up to her until a level of 107+.
- Curie's higher HP as a companion (at least until one achieves level 50) is balanced out by the fact her Miss Nanny chassis has no inherent Damage Resistance or Energy Resistance and she cannot equip armor until after completing Emergent Behavior
- When talked to, Curie will occasionally give the player character regular stimpaks.
- Like all companions, Curie will pick up and use weapons on her own if the damage rating is better than the current one she has.
Effects of player's actions[]
- Achieving maximum affinity with Curie grants the Combat Medic perk, which offers a passive ability where the player character restore 100 HP when falling below 10% of their total HP, once every 24 hours.
- Curie's affinity towards the player character will not increase any further from the value 499 before Emergent Behavior is completed, even if "Curie liked/loved that" appears.
- Curie can be romanced.
Other interactions[]
- Curie will request to leave if she is brought back to Vault 81, but her affinity level will not change.
- Due to her seclusion in Vault 81, Curie is unaccustomed to the lawless nature of the Commonwealth and frequently makes comments reflecting her naivety, such as when looting dead bodies[18] or dropping items from the inventory onto the ground.[19]
- Curie does not comment if taken to the corpse of Nate/Nora in Vault 111.
- If Curie is an active companion when first talking to Moe Cronin in Diamond City about what baseball actually was, if one says it was "America's pasttime," she chimes in with mentioning RBI and batting averages.[22]
- Curie may approach and talk to various doctors in the Commonwealth if brought to them, such as Doctor Sun and Professor Scara in Diamond City and Patricia Montgomery in Covenant.[23]

Inventory[]
Miss Nanny[]
Synth[]
| Apparel | Weapon | Other items |
|---|---|---|
| Flannel shirt and jeans (can be given other clothes and armor) |
Laser rifle |
Notes[]
- In the Vault 81 terminal entry "Boot Up," the robot that would become Curie is erroneously referred to as a Mr. Handy. However, she specifically refers to herself as an original Miss Nanny model when at the General Atomics factory,[24] and her character model and template are that of a Miss Nanny (including sharing a voice actress, Sophie Cortina).
- If Emergent Behavior is completed and Curie switches to a synth body, anything in her inventory will not transfer to her new body. However, Curie's old Miss Nanny body can be found in the Memory Den's basement with all previous items that can safely be picked up from the inanimate robot body. Note that if she has been modified at a robot workbench, her robot body will revert to its default state during the transfer.
- Despite becoming a synth and liking when the player character says positive things about synths, Curie seems to have sympathy for the Brotherhood of Steel, as she likes it when the player character joins or helps them, excluding the destruction of the Railroad.
- Idle comments made by Curie indicate that she is aware of both the Nutritional Alternative Paste Program (NAPP) used at the Suffolk County Charter School (if brought there)[25] as well as the Forced Evolutionary Virus (when encountering super mutants).[26]

Appearances[]
Curie appears in Fallout 4 and Fallout Shelter Online.
Behind the scenes[]
- Curie was written by quest designer Ferret Baudoin.[Non-game 1]
- Curie is voiced by multilingual actress Sophie Cortina, who also voiced other Miss Nanny robots, including Miss Edna.
- In localized versions of the game, Curie's voice is dubbed by Ana Esther Alborg (Spanish), Naoko Sakakibara (Japanese) and Francesca Perilli (Italian).
- Curie is named after Marie Skłodowska Curie, the physicist and chemist who conducted pioneering research on radioactivity, a fact that Curie will acknowledge in-game.
- The curie is also the name of the unit of radioactivity (as in the explicit number of nuclear disintegrations per second, distinct from the unit of absorbed dose, the rad), and though it was officially named for Marie Curie's husband Pierre in 1910, it is widely accepted now that the contributions they made to science as a team are indivisible.
- Her name may also be a pun on the word "cure" in reference to her original purpose.
Bugs[]
- As a Miss Nanny, she is able to equip the bowler hat and Triggerman bowler, just like Codsworth. This has no effect on her total health, despite the item's +1 Endurance bonus. [verified]
- Curie in her synth body does not have any sneak ability which causes constant detection, all other companions have at least Sneak level 4 by default.[verified]
- Workaround: each level of sneak can be added with the console: 00102249.addperk 0004c935 then 00102249.addperk 000b9882 then 00102249.addperk 000b9883 then 00102249.addperk 000b9884
- Sometimes (only confirmed in synth body) no other dialogue options will be available outside of the ones in the Talk menu. [verified]
- This can be fixed by shooting Curie with a weapon. [verified]
- Transfer-related
- Curie's robot body may disappear following the transfer, thus potentially losing any items still stored in her inventory before the transfer. To relocate it, type prid 865d1 into the console, followed by moveto player, which will bring back Curie's old body to the player character.
- On occasion Curie, if she has been turned into a synth already, will still be accessible in the robot workbench. If selected, this will revert her to her Miss Nanny body.[verified]
- If Curie is modified using the robot workbench and the player character does the quest "Emergent Behavior" Curie will not talk during the entirety of the player character's conversation with Doctor Amari. If the player character sits on the bench and waits for a day, she will revert to her Miss Nanny self and all modifications will be lost. [verified]
- Diamond City security and other NPCs will continue to comment on having Curie as a companion as if she were a robot even if she has been moved into the body of a synth.[verified]
- Behavior
- Curie may unequip her base weapon and start collecting any and all dropped weapons to use instead. Even when given more powerful weapons, she will collect things like pipe pistols or swords as the player character defeats enemies. She also tends to loot ammo from dead enemies; even when possessing a weapon that uses that ammo type she will not use the weapon.[verified]
- To lock Curie to using her base laser rifle and stop picking things up type 00102249.equipitem 0022cc13 1 into the console.
- When Curie is transferred into her new body, she will still have her old battle AI, meaning for long-range attacks, she will use her default laser rifle. In close range, she will not have the cutting saw arm and will use her fists unless she has found or has been given a melee weapon. This can be fixed by recruiting a different companion, then going back to Curie. She will then behave like a normal humanoid companion.[verified]
- If Curie is given clothing or armor, or if she steps into power armor, her default outfit will disappear; once she steps out of the armor, or the clothing item is removed from her inventory, she will be naked.[verified]
- To fix this issue with her clothing and inventory, her default outfit can be forcibly equipped and made unremovable by typing in this command 00102249.equipitem 00117EB9 1 in the console.
- Dismissal and travel
- Sometimes Curie will not go to the location specified when dismissed and will not return to the original location, known locations, settlements, or any other feasible location, and as such simply disappears, even after sleep/resting for several in-game days.[verified]
- Possible fix: Track her with the Vault-Tec Population Management System.
- Upon dismissal Curie will reappear outside the medical room in Vault 81, regardless of where she is dismissed, even if dismissed to Sanctuary while in Sanctuary, she will immediately sprint toward Vault 81. [verified]
- Workaround: Reload an earlier save file and don't give the cure to Dr. Forsythe at the end of the "Hole in the Wall" quest until after speaking to Curie inside the doctor's clinic. She won't actually enter the room herself, so the player character has to get behind Curie and push her into the clinic. She will then initiate the proper dialogue to become a companion and will stay at the player character's chosen settlement. Alternatively, resetquest comcurie followed by setstage comcurie 83 will trigger the join companion dialogue, after which Curie can be moved as required.
- Sometimes, if she is transferred into synth body, she will have a smoking animation while idle with no weapon equipped. The animation may be normal and may normally stop after she equips the weapon, but is still out of character, though technically synths can smoke.[verified]
- Workaround: Take her to the end of the catacombs in Old North Church, where the Sole Survivor first meets Desdemona. She'll stand on the platform and finish her cigarette.
- Affinity
- Curie will dislike the player character for entering Covenant for the first time, regardless of whatever the player character says during the SAFE test or the fact that she will comment on how cute it is and suggest going inside.[verified]
- Curie will not have any dialogue when asked how the relationship with the player character is going if the player character did not romance her.[verified]
- Workaround: To fix this, open the console and click on Curie. In the console, type: setav CA_WantsToTalkRomanceRetry 1
- Curie's arm will sometimes get stuck in a pointing downwards position through the floor, resulting in her shooting her laser into the ground in combat. The only fix appears to be traveling to a different location. [verified]
- Curie's Perception and Intelligence stats will each be 1 higher than the value that they are set to. In-game she has 5 Perception; if setting the value to 8, she will have 9 Perception.[verified]
- Curie is missing the form id for Inspirational perks to work with her as a companion.[verified]
- Workaround: add the companion inspirational perk with the console 00102249.addperk 001d33d7
- After reaching the highest level of affinity with her, there is a conversation bug when you go to -> Talk -> press on Relationship and nothing happens. Just jumps back to Talk section. To fix this use console commands prid 102249, getav ca_affinity and getav CA_WantsToTalkRomanceRetry and try again. If she does not respond setav CA_WantsToTalkRomanceRetry 1. [verified]

- ↑ The Sole Survivor: "These mole rats carry a disease. Do you know anything about it?"
Curie: "My poor little darlings. They were used to grow all manner of new and interesting pathogens. Then vault citizens would be exposed to these viruses in the hopes that they would develop new antibodies. But they never got a chance to execute their plan. Clyde got out of his cage. He was smarter than the others, my sweet Clyde. He let out the others and those poor scientists never stood a chance. Curie: "Superb! I placed an emergency call so long ago. I was beginning to think something dreadful must've happened. I am pleased to report I completed my primary duties 83 years ago. Thousands of pathogens were grown in the mole rat hosts. Then a single broad spectrum cure was developed to treat them all. Very satisfying work for many decades. Now, please tell me you are authorized to release me from the lab."
