My entire life has been in this vault. I have analyzed and learned everything there is to know here. So now I must see the rest of the Commonwealth. Consult with scientists. Unearth more data to challenge my hypotheses.

Contagions Vulnerability Robotic Infirmary Engineer (CVRIE),[2] typically shortened to Curie, is a robot residing in Vault 81 in the Commonwealth in Fallout 4. She is a possible companion of the Sole Survivor.

Background[]

The state-of-the-art Curie was designed to be the guardian of Vault 81, responsible for preserving the knowledge amassed by the Vault 81 scientists, as well as ensuring that every single one is aware of the significance of the mission undertaken within the halls of the vault.[3] However, the robot met in 2287 is not the same robot as when she was deployed to the Vault. Due to the overseer's sabotage, none of the science staff received a notification about the drill that would have allowed them to enter Vault 81 in time to carry out the experiment.[4] Despite this, three researchers showed up: Kenneth Collins and Jim Flint reached the Vault from the Fens with the general population, while the overachiever M. Burrow was already on-site. They reported to the research area and were sealed inside.[5]

Despite their severely low numbers all but ensuring that the generations-long research plan would die out, the scientists still had state-of-the-art equipment, centuries' worth of supplies and the Contagions Vulnerability Robotic Infirmary Engineer (CVRIE), meaning that with even their limited manpower, they could still be a threat to the residential population.[6] To compensate, Collins upgraded and modified CVRIE, turning her from merely a customized Mister Handy unit into a fully-fledged lab assistant.[7] His upgrades provided her with a custom personality inspired by two female acquaintances of his, Liza and a French girl from Versailles he had met decades earlier, while also loading the databanks with every great body of work he had (Kant, Einstein, Born, Darwin, Faraday, Turing, Braun, and her namesake, Curie) as well as knowledge of at least French and Japanese in addition to English,[1] to make her more lifelike and human. As such, CVRIE became informally known as Curie.[8] With her help, the work picked up the pace and quite soon, the Phase I experimental trials began. When she was notified of this development, Overseer O. Olivette was mortified and attempted to play for time,[9] while maintaining an aura of camaraderie, taking care to not reveal her intentions. While the mood among the three researchers remained stable thanks to Collins and Curie, she knew they still had access to the nozzles and could release the pathogens for a Stage III trial, or worse. When a minor mishap with the mole rat population was resolved and Stage II was progressing rapidly, Olivette made her decision.[10]

Putting her plan into action, the overseer personally sabotaged the delivery nozzles inside every residential quarter and room on their side of the Vault. When the researchers began to notice (Burrow, specifically), she disconnected the only terminal that could communicate with the science team and dumped it in the reactor chamber, near the sealed backup entrance into the science section.[11] Sealed in the research wing with no means of communication, the scientists grimly continued their work, despite knowing that it, and them for that matter, was likely never to see the light of day again. Eventually, Curie became their inheritor,[12] watching as they fell one-by-one. Flint was killed when one of the mole rat test subjects named Clyde escaped his cage and spread the pathogen he'd been injected with,[13] while Collins and finally Burrow both died of old age. At each of their passings, Curie interred them in makeshift coffins made of old lockers and continued the scientists' work on her own.[14]

Finally, circa. 2204, Curie finished the broad spectrum cure allegedly capable of curing every pathogen the scientists had developed and analyzed in the captive mole rats.[15] Due to the severe lack of resources, though, Curie was only able to produce a single sample of the cure which she protected for the remainder of her time in the Vault up to 2287, when the Sole Survivor may have entered the secret Vault 81 looking for the cure to help the ill Austin Engill.

Companion[]

  • Curie is a robotic companion and shares all the advantages and disadvantages of one. While immune to radiation and poison, she can only use her built-in weapons (laser and buzzsaw by default; with Automatron installed, she can be modified at a robot workbench) and relies on innate DR for protection. If Emergent Behavior is completed, Curie then becomes a regular humanoid companion and can use better weapons and armor.
  • Unlike all other companions, Curie has a fixed amount of health (440 as a Miss Nanny and 670 as a synth), regardless of the player character's current level. This is a higher amount of health than any other companion, who only gain parity with Curie in her Miss Nanny shell around a level of 49-50.
    • As a synth, Curie's 670 health and ability to equip armor makes her by far the most durable companion, of which the other companions will not catch up to her until a level of 107+.
    • Curie's higher health for a companion (at least until the player character reaches around level 50) is balanced out by the fact she has 0 Damage Resistance or Energy Resistance and cannot equip armor until after completion of Emergent Behavior.
Benefits
  • Curie will occasionally give the player character stimpaks while in the party. If transferred into a synth body, she will instead provide Curie's healthpak.
  • At maximum affinity, she will grant the Combat Medic perk which offers a passive ability where the Sole Survivor can restore 100 HP when falling below 10% of their total HP, once every 24 hours.
Affinity
  • Curie's affinity towards the player character will not increase any further from the value 499 before Emergent Behavior is completed, even if the message "Curie liked/loved that" appears.
  • Curie is a potential candidate for romance.
  • Upon reaching maximum affinity with Curie, she will tell the Sole Survivor about a breakthrough she has made with mutfruit which increases the HP restoration effect when using stimpaks.

Quests[]

  • Hole in the Wall: The Sole Survivor encounters Curie in the secret Vault 81 while looking for the cure to help Austin. She only offers to give it once all the mole rats in the area are killed. After deciding what to do with the cure, Curie offers to join them as a companion.
  • Emergent Behavior: After raising her affinity to a certain threshold, Curie reveals her desire to obtain a more human-like body in order to advance her understandings of the world. Completing the quest results in Curie swapping her robotic body for that of a synth. It requires one to complete Dangerous Minds beforehand in order to unlock the option to ask Doctor Amari in the Memory Den to perform the procedure.

Other interactions[]

  • Curie will not say anything if the player character brings her to their dead spouse's body in Vault 111.
  • Curie will request to leave if she is brought back to Vault 81, but her affinity level will not change.
  • Due to her seclusion in Vault 81, Curie is unaccustomed to the lawless nature of the Commonwealth. When the Sole Survivor picks up items from dead bodies, she will occasionally comment "I believe we are supposed to file a police report, yes? And all the little things go in baggies for evidence." or "Shouldn't a coroner be doing that instead?" Dropping items will occasionally prompt her to advise the Sole Survivor that they may be fined for littering.
    • Additionally, she will occasionally comment "Someone is nearby, perhaps they are friendly." when observing enemies from a distance and may express some shock over their level of violence after combat.
  • When talking to Moe Cronin in Diamond City about what baseball actually was, she will correct him on how baseball was played, mentioning RBI and batting averages.
  • Curie will often talk to the various doctors in the Commonwealth while she is traveling with the Sole Survivor. For instance, she will ask Sun where he went to university which prompts a confused response from him in return.

Notes[]

  • If Emergent Behavior is completed and Curie switches to a synth body, anything in her inventory will not transfer to her new body. However, Curie's old Miss Nanny body can be found in the Memory Den's basement with all previous items that can safely be picked up from the inanimate robot body. Note that if she has been modified at a robot workbench, her robot body will revert to its default state during the transfer.
  • Despite becoming a synth and liking when the player character says positive things about synths, Curie seems to have sympathy for the Brotherhood of Steel, as she likes it when the player character joins or helps them, excluding the destruction of the Railroad.

    • Nick Valentine: "You two watch yourselves out there." To which Curie replies: "Oh monsieur. We do not watch. We observe."

Appearances[]

Curie appears in Fallout 4 and Fallout Shelter Online.

Behind the scenes[]

  • Curie was written by quest designer Ferret Baudoin.[Non-game 1]
  • In localized versions of the game, Curie's voice is dubbed by Ana Esther Alborg (Spanish), Naoko Sakakibara (Japanese) and Francesca Perilli (Italian).
  • Curie is named after Marie Skłodowska Curie, the physicist and chemist who conducted pioneering research on radioactivity, a fact that Curie will acknowledge in-game.
    • The curie is also the name of the obsolete unit of radioactivity (as in the explicit number of nuclear disintegrations per second, distinct from the obsolete unit of absorbed dose, the rad), and though it was officially named for Marie Curie's husband Pierre in 1910, it is widely accepted now that the contributions they made to science as a team are indivisible.
    • Her name may also be a pun on the word "cure" in reference to her original purpose.

Bugs[]

  • PCPC Playstation 4Playstation 4 Xbox OneXbox One As a Miss Nanny, she is able to equip the bowler hat and Triggerman bowler, just like Codsworth. This has no effect on her total health, despite the item's +1 Endurance bonus. Once equipped, the hat will not show up in her inventory, thus making it impossible to unequip it.
  • PCPC Playstation 4Playstation 4 Xbox OneXbox One Curie in her synth body does not have any sneak ability which causes constant detection, all other companions have at least Sneak level 4 by default.[verified]
    • PCPC Workaround: each level of sneak can be added with the console: 00102249.addperk 0004c935 then 00102249.addperk 000b9882 then 00102249.addperk 000b9883 then 00102249.addperk 000b9884
  • PCPC Sometimes (only confirmed in synth body) no other dialogue options will be available outside of the ones in the Talk menu. [verified]
    • PCPC This can be fixed by shooting Curie with a weapon. [verified]
Transfer-related
  • ** PCPC Curie's robot body may disappear following the transfer, thus potentially losing any items still stored in her inventory before the transfer. To relocate it, type prid 865d1 into the console, followed by moveto player, which will bring back Curie's old body to the player character.
  • PCPC Playstation 4Playstation 4 Xbox OneXbox One On occasion Curie, if she has been turned into a synth already, will still be accessible in the robot workbench. If selected, this will revert her to her Miss Nanny body.[verified]
  • PCPC If Curie is modified using the robot workbench and the player character does the quest "Emergent Behavior" Curie will not talk during the entirety of the player character's conversation with Doctor Amari. If the player character sits on the bench and waits for a day, she will revert to her Miss Nanny self and all modifications will be lost. [verified]
  • PCPC Playstation 4Playstation 4 Xbox OneXbox One Diamond City security and other NPCs will continue to comment on having Curie as a companion as if she were a robot even if she has been moved into the body of a synth.[verified]
Behavior
  • PCPC Playstation 4Playstation 4 Xbox OneXbox One Curie may unequip her base weapon and start collecting any and all dropped weapons to use instead.. Even when given more powerful weapons, she will collect things like pipe pistols or swords as the player character defeats enemies. She also tends to loot ammo from dead enemies; even when possessing a weapon that uses that ammo type she will not use the weapon.[verified]
    • PCPC To lock Curie to using her base laser rifle and stop picking things up type 00102249.equipitem 0022cc13 1 into the console.
  • PCPC Playstation 4Playstation 4 Xbox OneXbox One When Curie is transferred into her new body, she will still have her old battle AI, meaning for long-range attacks, she will use her default laser rifle. In close range, she will not have the cutting saw arm and will use her fists unless she has found or has been given a melee weapon. This can be fixed by recruiting a different companion, then going back to Curie. She will then behave like a normal humanoid companion.[verified]
  • PCPC Playstation 4Playstation 4 Xbox OneXbox One If Curie is given clothing or armor, or if she steps into power armor, her default outfit will disappear; once she steps out of the armor, or the clothing item is removed from her inventory, she will be naked.[verified]
    • PCPC To fix this issue with her clothing and inventory, her default outfit can be forcibly equipped and made unremovable by typing in this command 00102249.equipitem 00117EB9 1 in the console.
Dismissal and travel
  • PCPC Playstation 4Playstation 4 Xbox OneXbox One Sometimes Curie will not go to the location specified when dismissed and will not return to the original location, known locations, settlements, or any other feasible location, and as such simply disappears, even after sleep/resting for several in-game days.[verified]
  • PCPC Playstation 4Playstation 4 Xbox OneXbox One Upon dismissal Curie will reappear outside the medical room in Vault 81, regardless of where she is dismissed, even if dismissed to Sanctuary while in Sanctuary, she will immediately sprint toward Vault 81. [verified]
    • Workaround: Reload an earlier save file and don't give the cure to Dr. Forsythe at the end of the "Hole in the Wall" quest until after speaking to Curie inside the doctor's clinic. She won't actually enter the room herself, so the player character has to get behind Curie and push her into the clinic. She will then initiate the proper dialogue to become a companion and will stay at the player character's chosen settlement. Alternatively, resetquest comcurie followed by setstage comcurie 83 will trigger the join companion dialogue, after which Curie can be moved as required.
  • PCPC Playstation 4Playstation 4 Sometimes, if she is transferred into synth body, she will have a smoking animation while idle with no weapon equipped. The animation may be normal and may normally stop after she equips the weapon, but is still out of character, though technically synths can smoke.[verified]
    • Workaround: Take her to the end of the catacombs in Old North Church, where the Sole Survivor first meets Desdemona. She'll stand on the platform and finish her cigarette.
Affinity
  • PCPC Playstation 4Playstation 4 Curie will dislike the player character for entering Covenant for the first time, regardless of whatever the player character says during the SAFE test or the fact that she will comment on how cute it is and suggest going inside.[verified]
  • PCPC Playstation 4Playstation 4 Xbox OneXbox One Curie will not have any dialogue when asked how the relationship with the player character is going if the player character did not romance her.[verified]
    • PCPC Workaround: To fix this, open the console and click on Curie. In the console, type: setav CA_WantsToTalkRomanceRetry 1
  • PCPC Playstation 4Playstation 4 Xbox OneXbox One Curie's arm will sometimes get stuck in a pointing downwards position through the floor, resulting in her shooting her laser into the ground in combat. The only fix appears to be traveling to a different location. [verified]
  • PCPC Curie's Perception and Intelligence stats will each be 1 higher than the value that they are set to. In-game she has 5 Perception; if setting the value to 8, she will have 9 Perception.[verified]
  • PCPC Playstation 4Playstation 4 Xbox OneXbox One Curie is missing the form id for Inspirational perks to work with her as a companion.[verified]
    • PCPC Workaround: add the companion inspirational perk with the console 00102249.addperk 001d33d7
  • PCPC After reaching the highest level of affinity with her, there is a conversation bug when you go to -> Talk -> press on Relationship and nothing happens. Just jumps back to Talk section. To fix this use console commands prid 102249, getav ca_affinity and getav CA_WantsToTalkRomanceRetry and try again. If she does not respond setav CA_WantsToTalkRomanceRetry 1. [verified]
