Crucible is a side quest in the Fallout 4 Creation Club content "Heavy Incinerator." In April 2024, the quest was integrated into the free "Enclave Remnants" content pack as part of the Fallout 4 next-gen update.

Walkthrough[]

Before beginning this quest, the player should have:

At least one bobby pin is useful for picking the lock on a toolbox during quest. At least one point in the Hacker perk may be useful as well, as there is a terminal for a door. However, neither Locksmith nor Hacker are needed. The toolbox has a key, located in one of the tin cans on the shelf above the toolbox (as stated in the Forged keeper's note), and there is an alternate way around the terminal-locked doors by going higher up on the walkway to the rafters.

After exploring Saugus Ironworks, the player character must mod a set of raider power armor legs to have Flame resistance. There will be a set of raider power armor provided at a nearby power armor station, but any set of raider power armor can be used. This includes the set worn by Slag, if Out of the Fire has not yet been completed and it can be looted from him. The materials above are required to craft the flame resistance mods. There is a toolbox right beside the power armor which has the materials to cover the adhesive, although the player will still need 6 asbestos, 4 ballistic fiber and 1 rubber.

After modding the raider power armor, the player must wear it in order to become immune to fire in order to grab the heavy incinerator without dying.

10 Investigate Saugus IronworksThere's an old ironworks factory to the east that might have some useful materials. I should investigate the area to see what I can find.
10 Check the Forged Keeper's body for informationWhile investigating the Saugus Ironworks I encountered a gang of raiders called the Forged. Apparently they've set up a trial to find someone worthy of a powerful weapon. I found a note on one of the Forged that may offer a clue on how to retrieve it.
30 Read the keeper's note

Notes[]

  • Through this quest, 2 unique "Flame resistance" raider power armor leg mods can be acquired which prevent the wearer from receiving fire damage. Even after completion of the quest, these mods remain exclusive to raider power armor.
  • Even with the use of items such as explosives, the heavy incinerator is immovable, meaning the only way to acquire it through the quest is to walk to the point where it is affixed and pick it up from there.
  • Through the use of dragging corpses and world objects, one can essentially skip most of the quest objectives and claim the heavy incinerator without having to solve the puzzle.
  • This quest can be completed concurrently with the quest Out of the Fire. In fact, it doesn't even need to have been assigned. The optional objective to investigate the body of the Forged keeper for evidence will likely be triggered as she is one of the many Forged who may be fought en route to completing Out of the Fire. However, if her tool box is opened first (by lockpicking), the objective to look for evidence will be marked as failed.
  • If Out of the Fire hasn't been completed, using the flame-resistant power armor may be helpful as there are parts of the final confrontation in that quest that may result in the Sole Survivor accidentally falling off a platform into a smelter.
