We should have gunned down those bastards the moment they set foot here.Allen Lee

The Conflict on the Island is a cold war between the three factions on the Island in 2287.

Background[]

The great unrest on the Island is fundamentally rooted in the hazardous weather condition known as "the Fog". This fog periodically blankets the Island, bringing with it high levels of radiation along with all of the problems that come with it, including hostile creatures, sickness, and poor crop yield. When the synth colony of Acadia was founded, its leader, DiMA, pitied the people of Far Harbor for the hardships they endured as a result of the Fog. DiMA and one of his co-founders, Faraday, developed specialized fog condenser which were able to keep the Fog at bay and were powered by their wind farm. The people of Far Harbor begrudgingly accepted these condensers but disliked the fact that they had become reliant on others, as they greatly valued their independence and self-sufficiency.

In the mid-2270s, the Children of Atom arrived on the Island, taking up residence in an old submarine base they christened "The Nucleus." This base was left to the Children by DiMA, who had previously lived there. DiMA became friends with the leader of the Children at the time, Confessor Martin. Their friendship, along with DiMA's bequeathing of the Nucleus to the Children, resulted in good relations between them and Acadia.

Relations between the Children and Far Harbor were far less friendly however, as the former saw harbormen's resistance against the Fog as an affront to the church's beliefs. At the same time, the residents of Far Harbor blamed the Children for the Fog's increasing encroachment on their territory.

Two events triggered an escalation in the conflict. The first was the killing of one of the Children's missionaries by Allen Lee, a weapons merchant from Far Harbor and an outspoken opponent of the Children's presence on the Island. The second event was the disappearance of Confessor Martin and the subsequent elevation of Tektus as the new high confessor of the Children of Atom. Tektus was far more draconian in his beliefs than his predecessor, and wished for a more violent approach in dealing with Far Harbor. Relations also worsened between the Children and Acadia, as Tektus was angered by DiMA and his followers for providing Far Harbor with the fog condensers.

DiMA, desperate to avoid an all-out war, came up with a plan to deescalate hostilities, at least between Far Harbor and the Children. He kidnapped and killed the leader of Far Harbor, Captain Avery, and proceeded to replace her with a synth. This synth Avery was returned to the town in order to act as a voice of reason to prevent the harbormen from outright attacking the Children. He also came up with a contingency plan to wipe out both groups should they threaten Acadia. He kept the nuclear detonation key from the Nucleus, which would give him the ability to annihilate the Children using the still-functional missiles within the Vessel, and held the password to turn off the wind farm powering the fog condensers, which had become the only thing stopping the town from being overrun with Island creatures. However DiMA felt guilty over all he had done and planned, so he had the key and password hidden, with his memory of their locations removed and hidden in the computers of the Nucleus.

2287[]

In 2287, the Sole Survivor will journey to the Island via boat under the employ of Valentine Detective Agency in search of a girl who fled her parent's home, Kasumi Nakano, to due believing that she was a synth. While investigating there, the Sole Survivor will learn that Kasumi went to synth haven called Acadia. When Sole Survivor reaches the synth colony they will be asked by the Acadia's leader, DiMA, for their help help in resolving the conflict, and believes that the key to doing so is finding the memories he had previously hidden from himself.

Upon unlocking his memories, DiMA will be shocked to find out what he had done, and will suggest a number of solutions to the conflict. From there, the conflict will come to a head and can be solved in a number of ways.

DiMA can be convinced to turn himself into Far Harbor for Captain Avery's death, which will result in his execution, and possibly an assault on of Acadia at the hands of the harbormen if the Sole Survivor did not gather enough support. This leaves only Far Harbor and the Children on the Island if that is the case. If the Sole Survivor completes enough tasks for the people of Far Harbor, they can rally against Allen Lee's declaration of war and convince the harbormen not to attack Acadia.

Conversely, the Sole Survivor can also keep the death of Captain Avery a secret, and destroy one or both of the factions threatening Acadia. They can use the key to blow up the Children with the nuclear warhead stored in the Nucleus, doing so by either manual entry of the key or by convincing Tektus and the Children to do this themselves. This will leave Acadia and Far Harbor on the Island. Instead, they can turn off the wind farm powering the fog condensers protecting Far Harbor, resulting in the in the town being overrun by the creatures of the Island, and its subsequent destruction. This will leave only the Children and Acadia.

The Sole Survivor can also perform both of these actions, resulting in only Acadia surviving and DiMA feeling immensely bitter that such actions had to be done to ensure the safety of the synth colony.

A fourth option is possible where the Sole Survivor can engineer a stable peace by keeping the death of Captain Avery a secret and assisting DiMA in replacing High Confessor Tektus with a less zealous synth duplicate by either killing him and hiding the body or chasing him off the Island. This will result in a cessation of hostilities between all three factions, though DiMA laments that taking this course of action makes them seem no better than the Institute he co-established the colony of Acadia to help synths escape from.
