Due to the strong resemblence and function of the N99 10mm Pistol to the civilian Colt 6520 10mm Pistol, it's logical to conceive that the N99 is the military counterpart to the Colt 6520 therefore Colt had been contracted to manufacture the N99 model for the U.S. armed forces just prior to The Great War. This hasn't been confirmed by canon sources, though.
