I'm a hired hand. If anyone bothers these space cadets, I kill em. You got a problem with that?

The guard protects the Children of the Cathedral members at the Hub in Fallout.

Background[]

A hired hand employed by the Children to provide protection for the hospital established in the old Hub church, the unnamed guard isn't particularly well paid - mostly room and board - and states outright that anyone bothering his charges will die at his hand.[1] It seems he took up the job to lay low, as his life was "kind of busy" lately,[2] and as a result he's been out of the loop about the latest events in the city for a few weeks.[3]

As a mercenary, he is not a believer in the Holy Flame or the Cathedral creed. He holds their beliefs in little regard and isn't averse to sharing his views with strangers, as the Children pay him for protection, not agreeing with them.[4] However, after working for them for a couple of weeks he's starting to realize that they aren't just your random bunch of crazy cultists or assorted fools. They have excellent organization and a larger plan, he feels.[5] The fact that they came in and organized the Hub hospital like clockwork is a big indicator for him that they're not just another band of mindless zombies.[6]

He's partnered up with Phillips, who's the personal bodyguard of High Elder Jain.[7] Unlike his partner, the guard never worked for Decker. While the crime lord pays his bills, he is also a psychotic, stone cold, ruthless basterd[8] and working for him means taking on poor jobs with failure leading to death.[9]

Interestingly, he has more knowledge than might appear at a glance. He's aware of the radiation and nuclear fallout high up in the mountains, which gets worse the higher you travel,[10] and is familiar with water chips and their legendary poor quality.[11] In fact, he's surprised anyone might use them instead of well water in the 22nd century.[12]
