Chairman Cheng was the military leader of China from at least 2066 until the Great War in 2077.
Background
Under his rule, China invaded the US state of Alaska in 2066. China's head of state during that time was President Xin, and the details of the relationship between the two leaders are not known.
While in the Tranquility Lane or Anchorage Reclamation simulation, a few of the Chinese soldiers can be heard yelling "For Chairman Cheng!" The Chinese remnant soldiers in Mama Dolce's also yell this occasionally. Liberty Prime sometimes voices the line "Chairman Cheng will fail! China will fall!".
Irving Cheng, resident of Tenpenny Tower in the year 2277, claims to be a descendant of Chairman Cheng.
Notes
A distinctive facial hair style that can be chosen for the player character in the game is also named after him. This facial hair style bears a resemblance to the type of mustache often associated with Fu Manchu.
Appearances
Chairman Cheng does not appear in any of the games and is only mentioned in Fallout 3.
Behind the scenes
- His name is a reference to Ashley Cheng, production director at Bethesda Softworks.
- His quotation is most likely an allusion to a quote by Mao Zedong, leader of the People's Republic of China from 1949 to 1976: "We can learn what we did not know. We are not only good at destroying the old world, we are also good at building the new."[2] The fact that Cheng says this suggests that Mao's policies were followed into the 2070's, similar to how American sentiment from the 1950's persisted.
