A child is a miracle. A year ago when Mercy told us she was pregnant I feared the worst. What possible good could come from a child born inside a vault and raised by a bunch of government agents? It turns out she could save them from themselves.
We had all turned inward for over 15 years, isolating ourselves from each other. Less than half of us remain of the originals. Some took their own lives. Too many died in the mutiny. Now we began to come together for Mercy's sake.
Slick took care of Mercy, helping her despite her objects and sometimes blistering tirades. Regs read everything he could about how to deliver a child. He did a magnificent job. I built a crib and toys for our new agent to be. Even AC got into the spirit, arranging for a baby shower, although I have to use the term loosely.
Magdalene Stern will be celebrating her first birthday today. Maggie saved us from each other. We came together to help raise this child. Mercy still hasn't told us who the father is, and none of the men have come forward to claim her. That's okay. She belongs to all of us and we belong to her.
