Charles Dieter Jr. was a writer who lived before the Great War.
Background[]
In the days leading up to the Great War, Dieter rented a cabin at Neponset Park to get away from the busy city life and gain inspiration for the novel he intended to write, titled "The Silence Before the Storm." He had visited the cabin previously with his parents, but this was his first time doing so alone.[1] Despite his strained relationship with his wife Carol and the unexpected noise from the nearby quarry, he was initially positive, dedicating his book to Carol and their daughters and attempting to view his situation as a creative aid.[2]
However, by October 21, the noise had become too much to bear, though Dieter still attempted to work through it. The following day, he confronted the quarry's foreman Ralph "Something-ski" in an attempt to regain peace and quiet, but was rebuked, and spent the rest of the day practicing shooting and bemoaning his wife for her supposed nagging behavior and his lack of a son.[3]
By October 23, Dieter still had not been able to write more than a fragment of his novel's opening sentence.[4] He finally snapped from the strain and headed for the quarry, intending to kill the workers.[5] However, he himself was killed when the Great War struck, and the Sole Survivor can find his remains still present near the quarry in 2287. A hunting rifle, a trilby hat, a note titled Last entry, and the Neponset cabin key can be found next to his remains.
Appearances[]
