Characters are the representations of persons in works of art. In the Fallout series, the term refers to the various inhabitants of the Wasteland. Characters can be divided into non-player characters (NPCs), mentioned-only characters (MOCs) and player characters (PCs).
Non-player character
A non-player character is any person in a game that the player character can interact with. They are not controlled by anyone but a set AI. So basically, an NPC is just anyone you meet in a game besides yourself.
Mentioned-only character
A mentioned-only character is any person that does not actually appear in a game, or is dead from the start of the game, that are mentioned in conversation with NPCs, on holodisks and notes, terminals, or any other source in the specific game.
Player character
The player character is a player's avatar in the game world. These can be designed by them, but some of the games offer pre-designed player characters as well. Player characters' decisions make a dramatic impact on the wasteland and its inhabitants.
