Characters are the representations of persons in works of art. In the Fallout series, the term refers to the various inhabitants of the Wasteland. Characters can be divided into non-player characters (NPCs), mentioned-only characters (MOCs) and player characters (PCs).

Non-player character[edit | edit source]
A non-player character is an AI-controlled character that the player can interact with. In the Gamebryo games, NPCs are pre-programmed via "packages" in the G.E.C.K. editor.
Non-player character records within .esm data files use an NPC_ record signature.
Mentioned-only character[edit | edit source]
A mentioned-only character is any person that does not actually appear in a game, and is mentioned in conversation with NPCs, on holotapes, notes, terminals, or any other source in the specific game.
Player character[edit | edit source]
The player character is a player's avatar in the game world. These can be designed by them, but some of the games offer pre-designed player characters as well. Player characters' decisions make a dramatic impact on the wasteland and its inhabitants.
