So if you want to buy all of Cassidy Caravans, you're looking at it - and what I got in my pockets. Still, as little as that is, not looking to sell.Cass

Cassidy Caravans is a caravan company founded, owned, and led by Rose of Sharon Cassidy that operates in New California and the Mojave Wasteland. Once a substantial rival to other groups like the Crimson Caravan Company and a prolific water trading outfit along the West Coast, by 2281 they have fallen on hard times due to a string of unfortunate circumstances. The caravan group appears by association with its leader Cass in Fallout: New Vegas.

Background[]

Born out of necessity[]

Due to a self-admitted restless, nomadic nature, after her father departed and her mother died of illness in her adolesence, Rose of Sharon Cassidy made her own way into early adulthood, wandering the wasteland and picking up the skills needed to survive the harsh environment beyond the few pockets of civilization. After passing through the same settlements and becoming familiar with the locals, residents would occasionally pay Cass to deliver items to the next town along her path.[1][2]

Eventually, Cass realized that she could satisfy her need to wander while making enough caps to pay for it. At some point in the mid-to-late 23rd century, Cass formally established Cassidy Caravans, gradually accruing a dedicated workforce to assist with the deliveries.[3] Among her known employees was Griffin Wares, another caravan outfit that evidently became a subsidiary of Cassidy Caravans sometime prior to 2281.[4] Although the company's size was small, their quality of service trading supplies was quite competitive, managing to present a threat to well-established rival outfits by taking on clients with some of the biggest economic powers around including the New California Republic.[5][6]

Towards the latter half of the 23rd century, despite increasingly brutal conflicts between the caravan groups in frontier territories like the Mojave and a lack of protective infrastructure from the NCR, Cassidy Caravans continued to operate in the area.[7][8]

Brought to collapse[]

In late 2281, Cass' organization was targeted by a covert coalition led by Gloria Van Graff of the arms-dealing Van Graffs and Alice McLafferty, manager of the Crimson Caravan Company's New Vegas branch, looking to topple the influence of Cassidy Caravans by discreetly destroying its affiliated assets in order to eventually force Cass to take a buyout offer from Alice on behalf of the CCC.[9][10] Armed with energy weapons as a means of making it appear to be an ambush by the Brotherhood of Steel, Van Graff hitmen attacked the Cassidy-stamped caravan while they were camping out near the southern wall of Camp McCarran, burning the crew's bodies to ash and wrecking the cargo they were carrying.[11][12][13] The attackers left little evidence at the scenes of their crimes except in one case: when they attacked Durable Dunn's caravan, they also took losses, with the bodies of Van Graff thugs and a Crimson Caravan guard evidencing their involvement.

At the time, Cass had been held up by a bureaucratic mess going on at the Mojave Outpost to the southwest, attempting to clear her caravan papers to gain access back into the Mojave.[14] Once she got word from Rangers that found the caravan wreckage, Cass had wanted to immediately head out to salvage what was left, but the slow processing of her documentation and recent events further along Interstate 15 meant she was both legally and physically forced to remain within the outpost, drinking her boredom away at the barracks while lamenting the loss of the organization she had spent most of her life building up with her own two hands.[15]

  1. The Courier: "So you just started in the caravan...?"
Rose of Sharon Cassidy: "Actually, it sort of fell on me. My feet get antsy if I stay in one place, like the Mojave Outpost."
    (Rose of Sharon Cassidy's dialogue)
  2. The Courier: "So you traveled a lot."
Rose of Sharon Cassidy: "Yeah. West, East - and passed through places enough times people would sometimes pay me some caps to take something to the next town."
    (Rose of Sharon Cassidy's dialogue)
  3. The Courier: "What, like a courier?"
Cass: "Well, not as glamorous, I guess - roads back West were safer in most places. Most. Anyway, occurred to me I could scratch the traveling itch and get paid for it. Cassidy Caravans formed around me, rest is history."
    (Rose of Sharon Cassidy's dialogue)
  4. Cass: "You know what, what happened to my caravan - not the first time I've heard about an attack like that. One of our caravans got hit a few months back, and the caravan'd been burned, too, along with the cargo. I wonder if he made the same mistake, and that other caravan got hit with energy weapons, too."
(Rose of Sharon Cassidy's dialogue) Note: This dialogue is during Heartaches by the Number, when Cass directs the player character to visit Durable Dunn's sacked caravan. Contextually, this would mean Durable Dunn's caravan was part of Cassidy Caravans.
  5. The Courier: "Tell me about the negotiation."
Alice McLafferty: "There's a small trading outfit, Cassidy Caravans, that I'm interested in acquiring. They've been rather competitive, so it's time to buy them out. I have it on good authority that the owner, Cass, wants out of the caravan business. Cass frequently trades with the NCR, so you'll likely find her at the Mojave Outpost."
    (Alice McLafferty's dialogue)
  6. The Courier: "Do you deal mostly with NCR?"
Rose of Sharon Cassidy: "Anyone wise does. Vegas families pay on time, from what I've heard - even the Omertas. The White Gloves pay on time, but they're... creepy. Deal with anyone else, though, you're taking a big risk."
    (Rose of Sharon Cassidy's dialogue)
  7. The Courier: "And caravan life's the same way?"
Rose of Sharon Cassidy: "The Caravan fighting here in the Mojave... it's been downright brutal. The amount of caravan space you reserve for ammo alone..."
    (Rose of Sharon Cassidy's dialogue)
  8. The Courier: "You sound frustrated."
Rose of Sharon Cassidy: "I am. If NCR took the same stand and committed patrols to the roads, then I think that'd solve a lot of their problems right there. But they don't. Caravans get butchered in the Mojave all the time, like mine. And so fucking close to Vegas, you could see it from the wall."
    (Rose of Sharon Cassidy's dialogue)
  9. Letter to Gloria
  10. Rose of Sharon Cassidy: "That does it, that's all I need to know. Crimson Caravan and the Van Graffs... they were behind burning these caravans, and they've got to answer for them."
    (Rose of Sharon Cassidy's dialogue)
  11. Rose of Sharon Cassidy: "God, there's almost nothing left. Looks like whoever it was - was just in the mood for killing. Most of the cargo's ash, too - not burned, looks like... disintegrated. When I heard the reports, I assumed "ash" meant "burned.""
    (Rose of Sharon Cassidy's dialogue)
  12. Rose of Sharon Cassidy: "More energy weapons hit this caravan. Place has been picked clean. This... is Brotherhood level murder here. But they don't do things like that. This was done with a purpose."
    (Rose of Sharon Cassidy's dialogue)
  13. The Courier: "Wait, what happened to your caravan?"
Rose of Sharon Cassidy: "Mojave happened - hit by raiders packing some heavy firepower. Can't believe the Crimson Caravan haven't heard. So if you want to buy all of Cassidy Caravans, you're looking at it - and what I got in my pockets. Still, as little as that is, not looking to sell."
    (Rose of Sharon Cassidy's dialogue)
  14. The Courier: "Where was your caravan hit?"
Rose of Sharon Cassidy: "Up side of Vegas, hear tell. Trapped at the Mojave Outpost, so I wasn't able to run there when I heard. Been weeks since it was hit, so the site's probably a Cazador nest by now."
    (Rose of Sharon Cassidy's dialogue)
  15. The Courier: "Who's Jackson?"
Rose of Sharon Cassidy: "Jackson won't let me head north, it's not safe... and even though my caravan's gone, my caravan papers are keeping me here."
    (Rose of Sharon Cassidy's dialogue)
