Background[]
Born into an emotionally distant and abusive family of Irish descent[2] around 2260 or 2261, Cait remembers that her parents would routinely abuse her both physically and verbally for the first 18 years of her life. She attempted to run away twice; they locked her in a shed outside of the house the first time she did it, and the second time they broke one of her legs.[3] The abuse eventually led to Cait becoming convinced she was a mistake. Still, she deluded herself into thinking they loved her enough not to kick her out of the house. This illusion was shattered once her eighteenth birthday came; her parents slapped a shock collar around her neck, and sold her into slavery, all without a hint of regret.[4][5]
For the next five years, the young adult Cait was used as entertainment for the slavers, which she refuses to detail. Her time with the slavers wrecked her emotionally and warped her personality. Above all, Cait developed significant resentment towards her captors, but endured it while learning some tricks of their trade. After stealing caps from sleeping men after they used her, she eventually managed to buy her freedom. With 23 years worth of pent-up fury, the first thing she did with her newfound freedom was track down her parents so she could empty both barrels of her shotgun into them.[6][7]
However, even with her freedom and her revenge against her parents, Cait did not feel fulfilled. To cope she took to alcohol and chems to help forget her past. At some point around 2284, Cait found her way to Tommy Lonegan and his setup at the Combat Zone where she joined up as a cage fighter and fought to provide her with the funds to buy everything she needed to forget her past. But Cait knew the point of the fighting wasn't to provide for herself monetarily. She hated everyone, herself the most, and the violence, pain, wounds, and getting herself addicted to Psycho were ways to punish herself and hopefully to one day meet the bloody death she had felt she deserved.[8]
Against her dark hopes, Cait proved tough to beat, even after raiders moved in and took control of the Combat Zone, resulting in the bloody sport getting extremely lethal. With the raiders in charge, those who didn't keep their head on a swivel were liable to be sucker-punched and robbed in the best of circumstances. Cait herself learned that short of buying herself some friends, she would have been a victim waiting to be preyed upon. The teacher of that vital lesson was a raider named Stratton, who abandoned her to be beaten by other raiders after she refused to sleep with him.[9]
By 2287, Cait had been a cage fighter in the Combat Zone for three years, two of them under raider management, all with hundreds of victories to her name.[10]
Personality[]
Cait puts up a deceptively convincing tough Irish gal act, but beneath this exterior is a broken woman with a lifetime of misery behind her.[2] Cait is deeply paranoid about being emotionally vulnerable, as everyone she has known intimately has betrayed her in some way. This has in turn caused an inherent mistrust in people in general, especially those making selfless offers of kindness. The only relationship she fully trusts is trade relationships, involving either the offer of caps or other services.[11] Cait is also deeply regretful of many of the choices she has made up to the present, questioning if the brutality she has known all her life is truly the only way to settle things.[12]
As an escape and a way to forget the traumas of her life, Cait has taken to both the bottle and the needle (Psycho being her go-to) and has been using both for several years.[13] Because of this prolonged usage, she is incapable of being cured of her Psycho addiction through normal means as treatment from doctors or Addictol have no meaningful effects.[14] However, at some point during her "career," she learned about the heinous experiments performed by the Vault-Tec Corporation in their signature Vaults; Cait latched onto the story of one particular Vault involving experimenting on drug addicts using a procedure for helping cleanse the test subjects of even long-term addictions. However, her close ties to the Combat Zone meant she never expected that she would get the chance to try it out on herself.[15]
Despite her life being a seemingly unceasing march of adversity, disappointment and horror (coupled with a dependence on Psycho and the accompanying progressive health damage[16]), Cait refuses to take the easy way out. While admitting to having stared down the barrel of her shotgun more than once, she has yet to pull the trigger. Instead, she pursued the death she could not give herself fighting in the Zone, hoping one day to be crushed to death by one of the hundreds of opponents she had fought.[8] Throughout it all though, she persevered, deep down hoping to find a single decent scrap of humanity that makes her life worth living.[13]

Companion[]
- Cait becomes available as a companion after entering and clearing the Combat Zone near Boston Common, then talking to Tommy Lonegan on the theater stage.
- She has the unique trait of being able to pick locks, akin to having the Locksmith perk. She can be commanded to open any lock of any difficulty from Novice to Master and only requires having a reasonable supply of bobby pins in her inventory.
- Cait can be romanced.
Effects of player's actions[]
- Gaining maximum affinity with Cait grants the Trigger Rush perk, which offers a temporary increase to AP regeneration when the player character's HP drops below 25% of its current total.
- Without completing Benign Intervention, the maximum level of affinity that can be reached with her is 999, meaning completing that quest is required to gain the perk.
- Cait will actively use Psycho, Jet, RadAway and other chems in her inventory, using the appropriate animations. It might be beneficial to keep her stocked up as she appears to get friendly very quickly, and it might improve her usefulness in fights.
- However, she may react negatively, including lowering her affinity when the player character uses chems themselves after completing Benign Intervention, berating them for being a "hypocrite" after helping her to cure her Psycho addiction.
- Before completing Benign Intervention, Cait likes when the Sole Survivor drinks hard alcoholic beverages (bourbon, rum, vodka, whiskey and wine). Drinking before sleeping and before waiting will speed up the process.
Other interactions[]
- Cait will comment if taken to the corpse of Nate/Nora in Vault 111.[17]
- Cait makes flirtatious comments towards several characters, such as Piper, Deacon, Preston Garvey, MacCready, and Hancock when swapping the active companion. She will continue to make comments even after being romanced.
- If brought to the Diamond City market, Cait will comment on Takahashi and his serving noodles instead of alcohol.[18]
- When entering and exploring any Vaults with Cait as an active companion after completing Benign Intervention, she will ask to leave quickly.

Fallout: The Board Game[]
- Cait can be acquired at the shop by any player character that has the Vilified trait. When the player character has her as the active companion and performs a test that uses Perception, Agility or Luck, she can be exhausted to gain one hit on the test. When the player character performs the camp action, she will become unexhausted. However, if the player character does not have at least one drug in their inventory, she must be discarded.

Notes[]
Cait is the most openly affectionate and flirtatious of the Sole Survivor's companions, frequently teasing that the Sole Survivor is "fishing for a snog," joking that "all this 'rest' is making [her] tired," and that she's pulled a muscle from "sleeping." This does not change the Lover's Embrace bonus value or duration; she will also continue her pre-romance spontaneous commentary and casual dialogue as well.
Notable quotes[]
- "It all starts with two wastes of humanity I suppose you could called me parents. I'm convinced that I was a mistake, because I can't remember a single moment that they treated me like their daughter." – Unlocked conversation at "Admired" affinity with Cait
- "You can imagine the look on me parents faces when I kicked on their door. What you can't imagine is what they looked like after... after I emptied me gun into them."
- After romancing her:
- "I'm closer to you than anyone else in my life. What more can anyone ask?"
- "There's nowhere else I'd rather be than right here, at your side."
- "My heart, my treasure, my love. All for you."

- Activating Lover's Embrace:
- "Ow. I think I pulled a muscle or somethin'."
- "Rise and shine, love."
- "All this rest is making me tired."
- "You have a good sleep? I know I did."

Appearances[]
Cait appears in Fallout 4, Fallout: The Board Game, Fallout Shelter Online, and Fallout: Wasteland Warfare.
Behind the scenes[]
- Cait was written by quest designer Alan Nanes.[Non-game 1]
- Cait is voiced by actress Katy Townsend, who is natively Scottish, but adopts an Irish accent for the role. In localized versions of the game, Cait's voice is dubbed by Julie Badoc (French), Jenny De Cesarei (Italian), Saeko Zōgō (Japanese) and Ana De Castro (Spanish).
- Cut dialogue for Tommy Lonegan indicates that at one stage during development, it was planned for the player character to be able to beat Cait in a fight in order to gain her as a companion.
Bugs[]
- Cait's quest might not trigger after her confession about her addiction. Taking another companion, sending her back to a settlement, and then talking with her should trigger the quest (it may have to do with her being flagged as a companion). For more info about this bug, read Benign Intervention.[verified]
- Cait will talk about wanting to "lower the dosage" if she thinks she is being followed in combat after Vault 95.[verified]
- During Cait's companion quest, Cait may begin to randomly collapse as if incapacitated during the dialogue. This will continue following completion of the quest.[verified]
- Ordering Cait to pick a floor safe when there is an object between the safe and Cait may sometimes cause her to pace aimlessly around the area.[verified]

(Tommy Lonegan's dialogue) - ↑ 2.0 2.1 The Sole Survivor: "Sounds like justice to me."
Cait: "Was it justice or was it murder? When I close me eyes, all I can see is their faces twisted with fear. And then me mind starts wanderin' and I start judgin' myself. And it's rippin' me the fuck apart. You think I inject myself with all that shite and drink myself drunk because I'm a 'tough Irish gal?' I do it so I can forget and move on with me miserable life. So there you are. The entire flawed package known as Cait, stripped bare for your perusal."
(Cait's dialogue) - ↑ The Sole Survivor: "Why didn't you run away?"
Cait: "I tried. Twice. The first time I did it, they locked me in a shed outside of the house we lived in. The second time, they broke one of me legs."
(Cait's dialogue) - ↑ The Sole Survivor: "I appreciate your trust."
Cait: "Well, you're the first to earn it. It all starts with two wastes of humanity I suppose you could call me parents. I'm convinced I was a mistake, because I can't remember a single moment that they treated me like their daughter. I was yelled at and beaten. Everythin' I did was wrong. Nothin' but a nuisance in their eyes. The whole time I was tellin' meself that they had to love me, even if it was just the tiniest bit, because they never kicked me out. Then me eighteenth birthday arrived, and I found out why they kept me around. They slapped a shock collar around me neck and sold me to slavers. They didn't even care enough about me to say goodbye. Eighteen years of sufferin' through that shite and all I was worth to them was a pocketful of caps."
(Cait's dialogue) - ↑ The Sole Survivor: "How could you kill your own parents?"
Cait: "How can you call them parents? They were opportunists who were takin' advantage of a human bein' just to make a few caps! If I had come out of that bitch of a mother deformed, they would have drowned me in the river and started again. They didn't give a shite about me. So I didn't give a shite about them. End of story."
(Cait's dialogue) - ↑ The Sole Survivor: "My god. I'm so sorry."
Cait: "Thanks, but there's more to the story. It would be easy to blame me charmin' personality on me parents. But they didn't make me this way, I did. I was with those slavers for five years. Roughest five of me goddamn life. The things they made me do... the way they used me for their amusement. It sickens me to my stomach even thinkin' about it. But I bidded me time and learned to use their own methods against them. Stealin' a few caps out of a sleepin' man's pocket is a piece of cake... as long as you don't get greedy."
(Cait's dialogue) - ↑ The Sole Survivor: "I can't even imagine having to go through something like that."
Cait: "You think that's low? Just wait. The story gets much worse. It took every ounce of patience I had, but after five years I had finally pocketed enough to buy me own way outta there. But instead of headin' off to try and repair the shambles of me life, I gave in to me rage and I headed home. You can imagine the look on me parents faces when I kicked open their door. What you can't imagine is what they looked like after... after I emptied me gun into them."
(Cait's dialogue) - ↑ 8.0 8.1 The Sole Survivor: "I always have time to listen to you, Cait."
Cait: "Good, because this isn't easy for me to say, and I want to get it right. Sigh. Where do I begin? Did you know I spent three years fightin' at the Combat Zone? Three years of gettin' beaten to hell by a bunch of losers and lunatics. After the matches were over, I'd spit out the blood, stitch me wounds and do a couple shots of Psycho to keep me goin'. I fuckin' hated it. I hated the crowds, I hated the other fighters and I hated meself. I never understood why I put myself through all of that. Until now. It's because I was alone. And I think deep down, I wanted to die... I wanted one of me opponents to crush the life out of me. The easy way out."
(Cait's dialogue) - ↑ The Sole Survivor: "Why are you so paranoid about debts?"
Cait: "It was kind of my fault. Got close to a guy named Stratton while I was there... thought we really had somethin' goin'. One night we had a fight cause I wouldn't hop in the sack with him. Our fight got pretty bad... nothin' physical, just a whole lot of yellin'. So I get pissed off, and I leave. I get outside and a bunch of Raiders start pushin' me around, givin' me shite. Stratton walks out, looks at me and says 'Next time you'll think twice before walkin' out on me.' Fucker left me there. I got beat up pretty good that night. That's when I learned that nobody does favors for free."
(Cait's dialogue) - ↑ The Sole Survivor: "What exactly do you think I'm expecting in return?"
Cait: "Who knows? Doin' your laundry, takin' a bullet for you, haulin' your gear... what's the difference? I don't think I'm getting' through to you. Let me explain what I mean, and then maybe you'll understand where I'm comin' from. I spent three years livin' at the Combat Zone. Smelled like puke and piss, but I called it home. I was makin' a few caps, had me own bed to sleep in and three hot meals a day. Then the Raiders took over the place. You know that lot... they aren't exactly what you'd call 'the gentle type.' After they moved in, if you didn't keep lookin' over your shoulder, you were liable to get sucker punched and robbed... or worse. Didn't take me long to learn that I had to put my hard-earned caps to good use. Buyin' friends was essential to makin' life easier. So I guess I'm waitin' for you to hand me a bill, you know what I mean?"
(Cait's dialogue) - ↑ Cait: "Have a minute? Got somethin' on my mind."
The Sole Survivor: "Of course, anything you need."
Cait: "Anythin' I need, huh? I might take you up on that one day. After Tommy stuck me with you, I was expectin' to hate your guts. Not only because you agreed to pick up me contract, but because I was waitin' for you to order me around like hired help. Now so far, you've been treatin' me like a friend. Hell, you've been damn near NICE to me. Now I don't mean to sound ungrateful, but your kindness is startin' to make me wonder. If there's anythin' I learned at the Combat Zone, it was that nobody does things for other people without expectin' somethin' in return."
(Cait's dialogue) - ↑ The Sole Survivor: "Why judge yourself?"
Cait: "Me parents sold me into slavery, but did they deserve to die for it? Yeah, I took some hard knocks as I was growin' up, but they fed me and kept me from glowin' with rads. This is the kind of crap that starts me mind wanderin' and drives me literally to drink. I guess I'm just waitin' to hear what you think of me now."
(Cait's dialogue) - ↑ 13.0 13.1 The Sole Survivor: "Well, that's the past. You're not alone anymore."
Cait: "Then maybe you know what I'm tryin' to say to you. My life's been nothin' but one huge failure after another. You've heard all me stories and you know the prices I've paid. There were a few times... when things got really bad, that I... I found meself starin' down the barrel of me own shotgun. I don't why I didn't pull the trigger. I guess I was prayin' that I could find a single decent scrap of humanity in this fucked up world. And then... what you did for me back there at Vault 95... it was like the answer to those prayers. That's the first time in me life I fully depended on someone else and they didn't let me down. Goddamn it, I'm makin' a mess of this..."
(Cait's dialogue) - ↑ The Sole Survivor: "Can your psycho addiction be cured?"
Cait: "Normally, a wasteland doc could handle it, but I've been usin' the stuff so damn long they can't help me anymore. There's only one other way I know, but it's not gonna be easy. There's supposed to be a vault somewhere out here... a place called Vault 95. I've heard that Vault-Tec used it for some kinda social experiment... stuck a bunch of junkies inside to poke and prod. Well, they supposedly had some special method to clean up those blokes in there... some kind of a machine or somethin'. If we could get inside, maybe that machine could help me."
(Cait's dialogue) - ↑ The Sole Survivor: "Tell me how we can clean you up."
Cait: "Well... there might be a way, but it's not gonna be easy.
(Cait's dialogue) - ↑ Cait: "I never thought I'd be sayin' this, but I... well, I really need your help."
The Sole Survivor: "Anything you need, Cait."
Cait: "I was hopin' you'd say that. We're friends now, which means I can trust ya with anythin'. I'm also hopin' it means you've got me back... 'cause I need it now more than ever. I'm... I'm sick... and I don't think I can hide it from ya anymore."
The Sole Survivor: "Okay, calm down and take a deep breath. If you're sick, I want to help you."
Cait: "Okay, okay... it's like this. Ever since I left home, I been usin' Psycho. I dunno why I'm still takin' that crap, but I can't stop... and believe me, I've tried. I can't even go a day without it anymore and I'm fuckin' sick and tired of it. I've even been doin' it behind your back.... sneakin' doeses when I think you aren't lookin'. Worst of all, it's been makin' me sick. I've been spittin' blood and I don't feel right inside. I need to get this shite out of me system before I wind up dead."
(Cait's dialogue) - ↑ Cait: "I know this must be difficult for you... I... I'm here if you need to talk."
(Cait's companion dialogue) - ↑ Cait: "Be right back, gonna grab a quick drink. Oi! Tin can! How 'bout ya set me up with the best ya've got."
Takahashi: "Nan-ni shimasho-ka?"
Cait: "A drink, you idiot. I want a drink!"<
Takahashi: "Nan-ni shimasho-ka?"
Cait: "Bloody machines..."
