I learned how to tie my shoes, and how to put out a fire, and how to put bullets into a gun! Once my hands get big enough to hold one, Joseph says he's gonna teach me how to shoot for real! Learning is fun!

Betty "Bumble" is six years old and the youngest citizen of Little Lamplight in Fallout 3.[Non-game 1]

Background[]

Bumble is the youngest and most naive inhabitant of Little Lamplight, eager to prove herself as a "big girl" and go on adventures.[1][2] Despite being taught to hide if she sees a raider, slaver, or super mutant, out of curiosity, she may opt to question the Lone Wanderer if they are any of these rather than immediately fleeing.[3] With the Child at Heart perk, Bumble is trusting enough to tell the Lone Wanderer her real name is Betty and gullibly believes them to be the "biggest kid" in Little Lamplight.[4] However, she does not buy into the Lone Wanderer being a slaver, claiming that the player character is trying to scare her and assures herself that "Mayor-Mac" would not allow slavers in.[5] Similarly, if one asserts to be a monster come to eat her, she dismisses it, saying Eclair taught her monsters are green or have more than two arms, unlike the Lone Wanderer who is a "mungo," and that Knock Knock told her mungos only eat people if they have to.[6] She is under the impression there are monsters in Vault 87 and that one of them bit Eclair in the face which caused him to lose an eye, and may comment that the Lone Wanderer seems like a "nice vault dweller" who does not bite people if they reveal they came from a vault.[7]

She enjoys attending Joseph's classes and has learned how to tie her shoe laces, put out a fire, and load bullets into a gun.[8] She has also learned how to fire a gun but is still too young to use one.[3][Non-game 1] She is keen to learn about the outside and can be heard asking Joseph to tell her more, who warns her of its dangers and the monsters that lurk there.[9] She is in the process of learning how to cut and sew, but still needs to be advised on what she is not allowed to cut due to past incidents, though Lucy comments she has a steady hand.[10] Despite her lessons, Bumble is dull and and can be overheard excitedly saying she found a tooth lying around and has taken it for herself.[11][Non-game 1] She has a propensity for clumsiness, and if asked about the origin of her nickname, she is defensive and says it's not her fault she has a tendency to knock things over, as she is prone to walking into objects.[12][Non-game 1] Jokes tend to fly over her head, and she can be heard laughing at Knock Knock's jokes despite not fully understanding what they mean.[13] She tends to get lost, and will decline giving the Lone Wanderer directions if they ask her to.[14]

On occasion, she carries a teddy bear that has been passed down through the generations, down to her mother and subsequently to Bumble.[Non-game 1]

Relationships[]

Bumble spends most of her time in the office building either with Joseph, or with Lucy in the clinic. She calls Joseph "Uncle Joseph," which annoys Penny into telling Bumble he's not her uncle.[9][15] She looks up to Lucy as an older sister, wanting to be "big and tough" like her, and avoids going outside alone per her instructions.[5][16][Non-game 1] She is a victim of Princess' bullying and can be heard trying to avoid her wrath.[17]

Daily schedule[]

Bumble is likely to be found at the office building. If she is not there, she sometimes is in the main cave or the Great Chamber.

Notes[]

  • Penny, when asked how she likes the classes while in the schoolhouse, will say "It's great, but Bumble's always bugging Joseph when he is trying to teach me." then say "she's just jealous because she doesn't have a brother anymore." This suggests Bumble had a brother, but it is uncertain whether he left Little Lamplight for Big Town, was killed in the wastes, or just disappeared from Little Lamplight.
  • Although she is technically "enslavable," only the child slaver can actually enslave her, not the Lone Wanderer.

Notable quotes[]

Appearances[]

Bumble appears only in Fallout 3.

Bugs[]

  • Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 Xbox 360Xbox 360 After Bumble is taken by the child slaver outside of Little Lamplight and the player character speaks to Eulogy Jones to receive the Boogeyman's hood, it is possible to once again select the dialogue to lure a child out of Little Lamplight. Bumble will then reappear in Little Lamplight still wearing the slave collar and can be lured outside again to the child slaver. However, the dialogue between the two will not unfold as it should and they will stand there indefinitely. [verified]
  • PCPC If one decides to kill all of the people at Paradise Falls to free the captured Little Lamplight characters one can still have Bumble go with the slaver if they previously talked to Eulogy about capturing the children at Little Lamplight. However, if one does, they will not receive a reward and the characters go inside the slave pen, into the slave room and disappear. [verified]
  • Playstation 3Playstation 3Playstation 3 Xbox 360Xbox 360 It is possible to keep Bumble at Little Lamplight and still obtain the Boogeyman's hood. This can be done by having the child slaver come and take Bumble, then you may simply follow the child slaver for a indefinite amount of time on her way to Paradise Falls. She will eventually encounter super mutants and be killed. Bumble will run back to Little Lamplight and re-enter the cave. You can then go to Paradise Falls and talk to Eulogy Jones. You will still receive the Boogeyman's hood, However Bumble will still be in her slave collar; this cannot be fixed. [verified]

    (Bumble’s dialogue)
  4. Bumble: "Whoa. You're big. You must be the biggest kid here! I'm the littlest kid. My real name's Betty. But mostly, I get called Bumble. What're you called, big kid?"
    (Bumble’s dialogue)
  5. 5.0 5.1 The Lone Wanderer: "I'm a Slaver. And I think you're just the kid I'm looking for!"
Bumble: "You're silly! Mayor-Mac wouldn't ever let a slaver in here! You can't scare me! I'm gonna be big and tough like Lucy! And then I'm gonna go out on adventures and everything!"
    (Bumble’s dialogue)
  6. The Lone Wanderer: "I'm a terrible monster, come to eat you up!"
Bumble: "You don't look like a monster. Eclair says monsters are green or got all kinds of arms and you only got two and they're like mine. You just look like a mungo, and Knock Knock says they don't eat people unless they're lost and have to."
    (Bumble’s dialogue)
  7. The Lone Wanderer: "Sometimes, people call me the Vault Dweller. It's nice to meet you."
Bumble: "It's nice to meet you, too. Did you come from the vault? I heard there's monsters down there. Eclair told me once, one of them, they got him and bit him right in the face and that's why he's only got one eye. But you don't look like a monster, and I don't think you'd bite anyone in the face. You look like a nice vault dweller."
    (Bumble’s dialogue)
  8. The Lone Wanderer: "What do you think of Joseph's classes?"

  9. 9.0 9.1 Bumble: "Uncle Joseph, could you explain more about the outside?"
Joseph: "Sure, Bumble. Outside of this cave, the world is a lot bigger and more dangerous than it is in here. It's also got people who would hurt or kill us."
    (Bumble and Joseph's dialogue)
  10. The Lone Wanderer: "So, you're the only doctor in this whole place?"
Lucy: "Well, we all know the basics. Combat first aid, you know? But I've got the most experience at the tough stuff. Bumble's been learning the most about the more complex parts of cutting and sewing. People tease her, but she's got a steady hand. Of course, now she just needs to learn what you do and don't cut."
    (Lucy’s dialogue)
  11. Bumble: "I got a new tooth today! It was just lying there and now it's mine!"
    (Bumble’s dialogue)
  12. The Lone Wanderer: "Why do they call you Bumble?"
Bumble: "It's just a name, okay? Not my fault I knock stuff over. Lucy says I still got a lot of growing to do."
    (Bumble’s dialogue)
  13. Bumble: "You're funny, Knock Knock!"
    (Bumble’s dialogue)
  14. The Lone Wanderer: "Can you give me directions?"
Bumble: "I dunno. I still get lost sometimes. Things are really big."
    (Bumble’s dialogue)
  15. Penny: "He's not your uncle, Bumble!"
    (Penny’s dialogue)
  16. The Lone Wanderer: "Maybe you should wait before going on any adventures."
Bumble: "Well, okay. But only 'cause Lucy says I shouldn't go outside alone yet."
    (Bumble’s dialogue)
  17. Bumble: "Sorry, Miss Princess. Please don't get angry at me, okay?"

    "Betty "Bumble":
The youngest member of Little Lamplight, Bumble is six and the closest to a carefree child to be found in Little Lamplight. She's only just learned how to fire a gun but hasn't tried it out yet, because she literally doesn't have the strength to pull the trigger. She sometimes carries around a teddy bear that used to be her mother's and has been passed down through generations of Lamplighters. Lucy treats her like a little sister. She's also clumsy and prone to knocking into objects, which earned her her nickname. She is extremely naive."
