Brain bot[1][2][3] or cybernetic robot,[4] is a general term for various types of cyborgs using real human (or otherwise) brains as central processing units for robot bodies. Unlike other cyborgs, the only organic element left in the robotic body is the brain itself.
Background[]
The brain bot technology was developed shortly before the war by General Atomics International under the leadership of Doctor Bert Riggs,[5] with indirect support from RobCo Industries.[6]
Robobrains, as they were eventually named, were a top secret military project, taking place in facilities secreted away from the prying eyes of the public. Some research occurred in military bases under full military control, like the Sierra Army Depot VI.[7] Others were hidden in plain sight and operated as part of a military-industrial complex, as with the United States of America Robotics Technology Facility RB-2851, constructed under a RobCo Sales & Service Center in East Boston. Operated jointly by General Atomics, RobCo Industries, and the United States Army's Robotics Division,[8] this facility was strictly compartmentalized and most soldiers stationed on site were not informed of the nature of the activities taking place within its confines.[9][10][11]
Aside from Robobrains developed by General Atomics, other brain bot variants were also eventually created by other companies, including Big MT's think tanks[12] and Vault-Tec's Rollerbrains.[13]
Variants[]
Robobrain[]

The basic Robobrain model spread throughout the United States vary in capabilities and looks, though the underlying model is largely the same. West Coast Robobrains deployed in The Glow, Sierra Army Depot VI, or the New California Republic were typically provided with human weapons for combat. However, rogue Robobrains that were not sealed in an installation or maintained by human groups usually lack such weapons and rely on their integrated armaments. It is not a general rule, however, as some outfits do not issue weapons to salvaged robots.
The purpose of a Robobrain can be determined by its paint job. For example, military Robobrains are painted in olive green and have their alphanumeric serial number (RB-xxxx) sprayed on their shell.
Think tank[]

The Think Tank has been developed in the laboratories of the Big MT and represents the pinnacle of this kind of technology. All of its components are miniaturized, it can float like Eyebots, while the brain is suspended in biomedical gel and able to interface with the chassis simultaneously. For communication and orientation, the Think Tanks have three forward facing monitors that display a rough human face (eyes and a mouth) and double as optical sensors.
Rollerbrain[]
- TV series article: Bud Askins
This type of rudimentary brain robot, known as the Rollerbrain[13] and colloquially identified in the show as the "Roomba-Brain" or "Brain-in-a-Roomba," is much smaller and resembles a robotic vacuum cleaner. The only known usage of this model was by Vault-Tec executive Bud Askins to serve as overseer of Vault 31.
Storm Goliath[]
Storm Goliaths are three unique, heavily armed and armored brain bots found in the Hawksbill weather station in the Skyline Valley region of Appalachia in 2104. Encased in their torso are two separated hemispheres of a brain, with an electronic eye similar to that of robobrains.

The Calculator's brain bot[]

A design created by the Calculator, the humanoid brain bot chassis is designed to interface with an extracted human brain, complete with eyeballs and spinal cord. It is humanoid in shape and towers above regular humans, with heavy armor plating and integrated weapons (a .50 heavy machine gun, rocket launcher, and clawed fist) provided for combat. It was custom built for the kidnapped Eastern Brotherhood General, Simon Barnaky.
At the base, it uses the same principle as a robobrain; the brain is held inside a hardened glass container at the top and suspended in pressurized bio med gel. Afterwards, however, it connected with robotic programming, creating a kind of semi-lobotomized robot. Its temperament and a part of its previous consciousness remain, but the robotic programming is superior, and the humanoid brain bot has trouble having human emotions and remembering its feelings and its personal life. Two electronic eyes are connected to the brain, allowing it to see. The humanoid brain bot is also able to communicate verbally due to an integrated voice module with the same voice as before, only slightly robotic.

Other than brain bots per se (brains encased in individual robot bodies), examples exist of disembodied brains being kept in tanks and connected to stationary computers instead. One such brain is that of Professor Calvert. John-Caleb Bradberton, is one where the whole head is preserved instead of just a brain.

The Sole Survivor: "I'd like to hear more about your research."
Bert Riggs: "Oh wonderful! No one else here really wants to talk about it. Functionally this model is more or less the same as the previous versions I worked on, but without the neural inhibitor and reconditioning. The voice modulator seems to have some minor issues interfacing with the neural matrix, which can add some moodiness. But that's easily solved with regular tune ups. Was there something else, Detective?"
