Bottle caps are a miscellaneous item in Fallout.
Characteristics[]
Made of durable material, with a small portable size, and instantly recognizable due to its pre- and post-War ubiquitousness, bottle caps (predominantly those used with bottles of Nuka-Cola) rapidly became one of the most common forms of currency accepted by trading outfits across the irradiated landscape of North America,[1] something that had been accurately speculated by scientist think thanks when projecting the outcome of nuclear war.[2]
The earliest known adoption of bottle caps as currency took place on the West Coast in the territory known as New California: within ten years of the founding of the mercantile center known as the Hub in 2093,[Non-game 1] caps were established as the standard currency of the wasteland.[Non-game 2] Their widespread use by Hub merchants contributed to such nicknames as "Hub bucks,"[3] "Hubbucks,"[4] bucks,[5] "Hub script,"[6] or just "script."[7]
The decision by the Hub's merchant drivers to use bottle caps came about because of two factors: first, the Old-World technology required to accurately manufacture and paint them had been mostly lost in the fiery outcome of the Great War, which significantly limited the effectiveness of counterfeiting efforts; the types of paint and metal used along with machinery specs have to be very specific in order for a bottle cap to be a genuine reproduction.[8] Second, there is a limited number of bottle caps that can be introduced into the economy, which preserves their value against inflation to some degree.[9] With these two factors combined, Hub merchants could reliably support the bottle cap as a common unit of exchange by also tying its value to the inarguably important commodity of potable water.[10]
Locations[]
The player character can find bottle caps in various locations throughout New California. Some of the highest concentrations are as follows:
- 2034 bottle caps in Lorenzo Giovanni's locked safe in Hub Downtown. He and his guards will turn hostile trying to steal it.
- 2016 bottle caps in Killian Darkwater's safe.
- 13 bottle caps in the building near the Crash House.
- 150 bottle caps in Jacob's bookcase at Old Town.
- 15/10/12/11 bottle caps in footlockers on level two of Mariposa Military Base.
- 2082 bottle caps in a footlocker on level 2 of the Los Angeles Vault.
Notes[]
Despite the item icon depicting multiple caps spilling from a bag, each instance is still only considered a single bottle cap.

Borous: "*{Quiet, skeptical}I don't know... might be some old Nuka Cola or Sunset Sarsaparilla bottlecaps lying around. It... It's not "currency" per se... Still, might be enough to trick the Sink's trade routines. Mobius put that test line for caps in the code as a debug command, I think.*"
Dala: "I don't believe that was Mobius' reason. His wild speculation concerning post-holocaust economic systems was quite extensive. And of high decibel."

Alice McLafferty: "Lots of little things - the paint on the label, the machining, the type of metal it's made from. I know there's counterfeit caps floating around, of course. Fortunately, they're very time-consuming to make, so the numbers are small."

Katrina: "{139}{}{Bartering is the exchange of goods. You give me some items, and I give you items in trade. Since you initiated the barter, I will let you pick and choose what you want. But the deal must be one that I think I will like, so you will probably want to give me more valuable goods that you don't need in exchange for less expensive things that you want. And if you don't have enough items to trade, there are always caps. Bottle caps are the only common money found out here. The caps are backed by the merchants of the Hub, so you can trade them anywhere.}"
