Blake Abernathy. Been ages since I've seen one of those vault suits around. You new to these parts?— Blake Abernathy

Blake Abernathy is the patriarch of Abernathy farm in Fallout 4.

Background[]

Blake Abernathy is the inheritor of the generations-old Abernathy farm, passed down to him from his father, and now maintained by him and his family.[1][2] He resides there with his wife, Connie, and his daughter, Lucy, alongside their farm cat Maisie, and a brahmin named Clarabell. His eldest daughter, Mary, died at the hands of raiders in the latest attack on the farm, and is buried behind their house.[3][Non-game 1] He continues to mourn the loss of Mary, to a point where he confuses Lucy with her.[4]

He and his family have primarily been growing tatoes, but have also recently begun to farm melons.[5] He can be heard grimacing over mole rats ravaging the tato crops, yet refuses to invest in traps from a trader; he goes so far as to say selling Lucy would not cover the costs of, a comment which his wife berates him for.[6] If asked what the key to farming is, he remarks about how his father would have replied that "it's the three L's: Land, Labor and Love," a sentiment which he agrees with.[7]

He and Lucy typically takes trips to Diamond City for trade, and Connie may be overheard "nagging" him to go there soon to purchase more salt.[8] If the Sole Survivor expresses an interest in taking up farming, Blake will wish them luck in the endeavor and comment on the possibility of swapping goods with one another at Diamond City market down the line.[9]

He can be heard affectionately teasing his daughter over her crush on Hawthorne at the city, musing that she should instead stay focused on her work on the farm.[10] Despite his gratitude for the Minutemen, he declines his daughter's request to join them, commenting on how she is needed at the farm, particularly in light of Mary's death.[11][12]

References[]

  1. The Sole Survivor: "How long has this farm been here?"
Blake Abernathy: "Generations I'd say. My father and his father at least."
    (Blake Abernathy’s dialogue)
  2. Blake Abernathy: "How about you? Ever think about workin' the land?"
The Sole Survivor: "Don't know. Never really thought about it."
Blake Abernathy: "Hell, neither did I. I was born into it."
    (Blake Abernathy’s dialogue)
  3. The Sole Survivor: "Bastards, all of them."
Blake Abernathy: "Yeah, but they're the best-armed bastards in the Commonwealth. Last time those raiders hit us, my daughter Mary tried to stand up to 'em. Now she's buried out back of the house. Only twenty one years old, and they shot her down without a thought. So you can understand why I'm glad to hear the Minutemen are back. Although a bit too late for my Mary."
    (Blake Abernathy's dialogue)
  4. Blake Abernathy: "It's funny, just for a moment there, I thought you were your sister."
Lucy Abernathy: "Aw, daddy. Don't think about things like that."
Blake Abernathy: "I suppose I can't help it. It hasn't been that long since... since she..."
Lucy Abernathy: "Stop that. Just put it out of your mind."
Blake Abernathy: "You're right, sweetheart. You're right."
    (Blake and Lucy Abernathy's dialogue)
  5. The Sole Survivor: "What kind of crops do you grow here?"
Blake Abernathy: "Mostly tatoes so far, but we're starting on melons."
    (Blake Abernathy’s dialogue)
  6. Blake Abernathy: "Damn Mole Rats have been at the Tatoes again."
Connie Abernathy: "Wasn't there that trader came through? Selling traps?"
Blake Abernathy: "Sure, but he was charging so much I could sell him Lucy and that still wouldn't cover it."
Connie Abernathy: "Blake Abernathy, shame on you. That's our daughter you're talking about!"
Blake Abernathy: "Just telling you how it is, dear."
    (Blake and Connie Abernathy's dialogue)
  7. The Sole Survivor: "What do you need to start up a farm?"
Blake Abernathy: "My father would have told you it's the three L's: Land, Labor and Love. You gotta have land to work, you gotta put in a full day's labor, and you gotta love what you do. Any one who doesn't ain't goin' to last long."
    (Blake Abernathy’s dialogue)
  8. Connie Abernathy: "We're going to need more salt soon. You better get on back to Diamond City before long."
Blake Abernathy: "I'll get around to it."
Connie Abernathy: "You always say that. "I'll get around to it." What are you waiting for, exactly?"
Blake Abernathy: "For you to quit nagging me about it, that's what."
    (Blake and Connie Abernathy's dialogue)
  9. Blake Abernathy: "How about you? Ever think about workin' the land?"
The Sole Survivor: "I'm sure I'll give it a try someday."
Blake Abernathy: "Well, good luck to you then. Maybe I'll see you at the Diamond City market someday an' we'll do a swap."
    (Blake Abernathy’s dialogue)
  10. Lucy Abernathy: "Daddy, when are we going back to Diamond City? I need some things. My hairbrush is falling apart, for one."
Blake Abernathy: "You just want to go make eyes at Hawthorne, you mean."
Lucy Abernathy: "Daddy! I do not!"
Blake Abernathy: "Don't you worry, little darling, we'll be heading there soon. Meanwhile, keep your mind on your work and off the boys."
    (Blake and Lucy Abernathy's dialogue)
  11. Lucy Abernathy: "I've been thinking about what happened to Mary. Maybe I should be doing something to help so other families don't have to suffer like we did."
Blake Abernathy: "What do you mean?"
Lucy Abernathy: "I could join the Minutemen and help defend the Commonwealth."
Blake Abernathy: "Oh, honey, listen... it's brave of you to say so and it's good to want to help people, but we need you here. Besides, your mother would never forgive you."
Lucy Abernathy: "I know, it's just... well, I'm almost a grown woman and I just don't know if this is the life I want. You understand, don't you daddy?"
Blake Abernathy: "Yes darling, I do, but after what happened with Mary, well... let's just give things time to settle down, okay?"
    (Blake and Lucy Abernathy's dialogue)
  12. Blake Abernathy: "Word of advice, though. If you do start up a farm, be ready to deal with the raiders. Why do all the hard work when you can just take what you want at gunpoint?"
The Sole Survivor: "What about the Minutemen? If you join up, we can all help each other against the raiders."
Blake Abernathy: "You don't say? I thought the Minutemen were all gone.
