The Blade of the East is a unique weapon in Fallout: New Vegas.
Characteristics[]
Compared to the standard bumper sword, the Blade of the East has a unique effect of inflicting -2 HP for 10 seconds per strike. It deals around twice the damage at a slightly higher attack speed, thus having a higher damage-per-second (DPS) value. It deals slightly less critical hit damage, costs less AP, has significantly more durability, and has the same weight. It does however have a significantly lower caps value and requires 100 Melee Weapons and 9 Strength to use effectively. It also has a tendency to cause enemies struck with it to be knocked back.
Visually, the only difference between the Blade and a bumper sword is that it does not have a license plate on the underside of the sword.
Special attack[]
The Blade of the East has a special Mauler attack, which does only 50% damage in V.A.T.S. at the cost of 9 more action points, but has the chance to knock enemies down.

Normal | 0 | 130 | 35 | 3.71 | none |

- Note: Melee weapons do double normal damage in V.A.T.S.
It is possible to execute Mauler outside of V.A.T.S. (without the required Melee skill of 50 to perform the move) by initiating a power attack (hold attack button) while moving forward.
Durability[]
The Blade of the East can successfully strike about 3995 times from full condition before breaking.
Variants[]
- Bumper sword - the standard variant found throughout the Mojave Wasteland.
- Blade of the West - a rare variant carried by marked men, particularly Blade, in the Divide.

Location[]
The weapon is used by Legate Lanius in the Legate's camp, but can only be obtained from him if one is siding with the NCR, Mr. House, or Yes Man, and opts not to use the Speech or Barter dialogue options to talk him out of fighting. Additionally, because one can only access the Legate's camp during the final quest, the Blade can only be used for a short time before the ending of the game.
Notes[]
- The Legate equips a separate version of the weapon (confirmed by the GECK) that is unobtainable by the player character, so when one attempts to take the weapon after killing Lanius, only the playable Blade of the East is available to be taken (the ID of the Legate's blade is 0013e4de). This unique version has a base damage of 65, a critical damage of 30, and a damage per second of 102. Lanius himself often inflicts more than 100 points of damage per hit with his sword.
- The sword cannot be pickpocketed from Lanius.
- The Blade of the East and Salt-Upon-Wounds' power fist are the only weapons in the game that naturally inflict poison damage without requiring adding one's own.
Bugs[]
If the player is in some places where Lanius can't hit you, Lanius will eventually equip a pistol, causing the Blade of the East to disappear. [verified]
