Behind the scenes[]
- A number of the listed species, such as the rockhopper (penguin), magnificent frigatebird, trumpeter swan (Cygnus buccinator), and Mexican violetear are not native to or normally found in Appalachia.
- While many of the names in the list belong to real-world bird species, not all of them do. The discrepancies are listed below:
- A syrinx is not a bird species but rather the name for a vocal organ found in birds. There is a bird species with "syrinx" in its name, the Caroline reed warbler (Acrocephalus syrinx), but this bird species is only found in Micronesia.
- The simurgh is a legendary bird from Persian mythology.
- Similarly, the cockatrice is a legendary monster from English mythology.
- "Plasticus Baggis" does not correspond to any real life species and is more likely a reference to plastic bag pollution; the name may be a homage to the mockumentary Baggus plasticus, The Invasive Species, which satirically presents plastic bag pollution as an invasive species.
- "Greg" is the name of a person, not a bird species. This is most likely a humorous non sequitur but could possibly reference a person named Greg Bird.
