Big Maw is a location in the Mire region of Appalachia.
Background[]
This natural feature of the Mire seems to have been used by cultists for their strange, unspeakable rituals.
Layout[]
Big Maw is a giant hole in the ground with a small pond at the bottom. There are stairs leading to the surface of the pond. At the bottom of the pond, there are two cultist statues overlooking a sacrificial altar and what appears to be the skeleton of some prehistoric creature.
Notable loot[]
- Another spring - Note, on a picnic table.
- Cultist dagger - Underwater, on a ledge directly under the "altar" area, next to a skeleton.
Notes[]
The Maw appears almost to have formed as a way for the skeletal remains to be exposed, with it going directly down into the earth until the skeleton is exposed and no further. This would follow a similar trend of odd happenings found in Appalachia, the Commonwealth, and the Capital Wasteland: the Interloper, the Visitor, many art deco sculptures, and even the likes of the obelisk found at the Dunwich Building all can be found very deep underground, with a significant amount of time (likely millions of years) required to have passed before they could have reached such depths naturally. How these happenings are connected is presently unknown.
- The simple existence of this skeleton points toward the creature it once belonged to having been an extreme anomaly for the time it would have existed: The Appalachian range is so old (older than the trees) that life capable of being fossilized had not yet formed on Earth. So, given this creature likely had a skeleton during a time in which animals with skeletons did not even exist, it can be inferred that this skeleton is in some way related to the False Gods of Appalachia. This is backed up further by the obvious cultist activity at the site.
- An identical skeleton can be found embedded in the roof of the tunnel leading into the chamber of the Interloper.
Appearances[]
Big Maw appears only in Fallout 76.
