Big Bend Tunnel East is a location which lies on the Red Line in the Cranberry Bog region of Appalachia. It is the eastern entrance to the rest of the Big Bend Tunnel. Along with Big Bend Tunnel West, it is the location of a compound inhabited by the Blue Ridge Caravan Company.

Inhabitants include Vinny Costa who organizes the caravans through the tunnel, merchants Eugenie and Rudy Fernandez, and guard Aries who is located in a train car in front of the area.

Background[]

After the war, many survivors took shelter in the tunnels, eventually perishing, like Thom, Molly, and their parents.[1] When the Brotherhood of Steel was established in Appalachia, they set up an outpost under Knight Melissa Reische at the eastern entrance to the tunnel sometime after November 2085 to monitor traffic through the region. In 2088, the Brotherhood established contact with Carol Sweeney, a Cutthroats deserter who established a small community at Big Bend West.[2]

The Brotherhood contingent continued to trade with the survivors at the western end for years, developing a reputation for generosity by Fall 2093.[3] However, the tunnel was increasingly infested with Scorched, and Knight Reische, posted to the checkpoint, noted that they lacked men and equipment to effectively contain them, living on borrowed time.[4] First, she made cuts: Reische used the camp as a staging area for salvage runs into Watoga, but eventually these runs were suspended and scout teams recalled to bolster the defenses.[5] Ultimately, with the Brotherhood losing the war with the Scorched, the camp was abandoned in summer of 2095.[6]

Big Bend Tunnel East was abandoned, playing a minor role in Fire Breathers' final mission: An attempt to blow up the tunnel and block the passage of the Scorched into Ash Heap. It became the final destination of Sgt. Holstein, one of the only people to make it out of the tunnel, before dying just outside.[7]

The Blue Ridge Caravan Company established an outpost in the location around 2103, greatly expanding the outpost and setting up a trade route through the tunnel and into Appalachia, bypassing the much more dangerous overland routes over the Allegheny Mountains. Vinny Costa, Head of Operations, set up his "office" at the eastern end, managing caravan merchants and guards, as they pushed into the region.[8]

Layout[]

Big Bend Tunnel East is located near Watoga in the Cranberry Bog. A rail line runs west to east through the Blue Ridge compound, in which reside several Blue Ridge Caravan ranch hands. On the easternmost side of the compound is a boxcar containing the corpse of Sgt. Holstein. Immediately within the compound walls is a pen area containing multiple hay bales and brahmin which can be milked.

The rail line continues west through the compound, passing under a sign for the Blue Ridge Caravan company and through a second wall. Past the wall is an open area, in the northern part of which lies two power armor stations, a tent containing four beds, a locked armory, and a cooking station. Next to the power armor stations is a raised structure that houses an armor workbench, a weapons workbench, as well as Vinny Costa's terminal.

Vinny Costa resides in the workshop area and can be spoken to in order to start the event quest Riding Shotgun. The western side of the compound is a cliff face which is located at the eastern entrance of the Big Bend Tunnel.
